To be successful when you are planting tree branches, you’ll need to get those branch cuttings to root.Some gardeners like to start rooting tree cuttings in water, while others prefer rooting them directly in sandy soil. In either case, you’ll do best to clip pieces of young branches, those under a year old, for growing trees.You can either place the base end of the cuttings in a container with several inches (7.5 cm.) of water or else sink them into a pot with potting soil. If you have decided to start rooting tree cuttings in water, add water to the container as it evaporates. If you are growing in soil, keep the soil moist. One way to keep the cuttings moist is to cover the container with a plastic bag. Cut a few slits in it first to let it breathe. They just paint the outer ring of the tree with a good tree killer and that’s it.If you want to drill holes then drill them in the outer layer of the tree. That will expose more of the live tissue to hopefully suck up more of the bleach.Step 2- Treat tree stump with bleach.It’s important that you treat your stump immediately after treating it. The tree will begin healing itself so the longer you wait, the less effect the bleach will have. Paint the beach on the stump or pour and fill each hole.I have read that you should repeat this every day for a week but I don’t think that will make any difference except wast a lot of your time. I will tell you right now its not salt, roundup, copper nails, or all the other crazy ideas you will read about online.After surveying a bunch of arborists (people who kill trees for a living) I found that the most common product they used to kill resilient trees like elms is called Tordon.Here are the steps to successfully kill large elm trees so they will never come back.1. Cut the elm tree down to a stump.If your elm tree is under 15 feet tall then go ahead and just whack it down. For larger elm trees you can start by cutting the lowest branches working your way up the tree and then work your way down cutting the trunk in manageable pieces until you are left with a stump.If you plan on pulling the stump out with a vehicle then leave the stump longer so you can wrap a rope or chain around it. If you plan on grinding it or really removing the stump in any other way then cut it as close to the ground as you can.2. Treat the Stump with Tordon.The key here is to be ready to immediately treat the stump as soon as you cut it down. Even waiting 30 minutes can decrease any tree killers effectiveness.Make sure you are wearing protective clothing like a long sleeve shirt and pants. Be sure to use chemical resistant gloves because you don’t want to get Tordon on your skill. It will turn you into an Umpa Lumpa…or a smurf…just kidding.I read Tordon’s Toxicity Rating and it said it was “of moderate toxicity to the eyes and only mildly toxic on the skin.” I don’t want you or I to be the 10-year human test study. What?! Mercury is bad for humans? Just be safe.You don’t need to treat the whole stump just the outer ring, just inside the bark. Pop the top and treat the tree.Let it sit for 3 to 5 days just to be sure it is completely dead before removing the stump.There are a few other ways you can treat an elm tree that will completely kill it. Tordon is just the easiest and fastest that I have found.

You don’t need to.All you really need is for the stump to be below the level of the soil. I just removed one of my tree stumps by hand and I was able to do it in about 20 minutes. Heres how I did it.1. Remove dirt or grass around the stump.My stump was in my lawn so I removed the sod around the tree stump in a 2-foot diameter circle. I only dug down maybe 3 to 4 inches.2. Cut the stump.Setting the sod to the side I used a cordless reciprocating saw and started cutting the stump at about 3 inches below the level of my grass.You could also use a chainsaw or a hand saw. If you use a chainsaw you may want to dig a bigger deeper hole. Be careful not to get your chain into the dirt or hit rocks because it will dull your chain fast.If you are using a reciprocating saw then it helps to have one of the longer blades made for cutting wood. I worked my way cutting around the whole stump.I wasn’t able to get to the middle of the stump so I used a sledgehammer to finish the job. It was nice that I left the stump a little tall so I had more leverage to break it off.3. Replace the dirt or grass.Once it broke off and all I did was replace the sod back to and covered the stump with a little dirt and some sod I dug up in another part of my yard. You could get a scrap piece of sod from a sod farm or just throw a little seed down.You could just leave it and let the grass do the job. It will eventually grow in and cover the stump.That's it. Pretty fast and easy. The stump is only a few inches below the soil but over time the fungi in the soil will decompose the rest of the stump and give all the nutrients to the grass.4. Recycle the stump.In fact, a cool technique I have used in my garden is called hugelkultur beds. Basically, you bury a bunch of wood and grow stuff on top of it. The buried wood acts as a sponge for water and feeds the roots of your plants all the food and water they need with little watering on your part.The stump under your grass should do the same. So instead of hauling off tree stump just bury it and plant stuff on top.

You simply use a hatchet to cut into the bark and spray with 50/50 roundup concentrate. This is a good method if you have a lot of small trees you need to thin out of a forest. It's not very practical if you live in the city unless you don’t mind a dying tree in your yard for several months.#2 Tree GirdlingYou could be old school and use an antique hand saw or just use a generator and reciprocating saw. Cut a 1” slice out of the bark and first layer of the tree all the way around. Then chop it out with a hatchet. This will cut off the water supply to the tree and it will die. I would only use this method if you live in the boonies are wanting to harvest the tree later for firewood once it is dead and dry.#3 How To Kill A Tree With RoundupThis is the best way to kill a tree in your yard. Cut your tree down with a chainsaw. I love my 460 Rancher. Watch my Rancher 460 review video. In the lighter outer ring of the tree drill holes and then fill the holes with 50/50 Roundup. Killing the tree like this will kill the tree stump and all the roots completely. Just cutting down most trees isn’t enough for them to die. This will avert any shoots coming up from the stump or roots.#4 How To Kill Tree With SaltThis works well especially if you don’t like using chemicals. It works much the same as using roundup. First, cut the tree down and then drill holes all the way around in the lighter outer ring of the tree. Fill the holes with Epson salts. This should kill the tree. This is also a good way to remove tree stumps. Learn how in my how to remove a tree stump video.#5 Kill Tree By Spraying LeavesI always have a bunch of little trees popping up in my yard like weeds. Using Fertilome Brush & Stump Killer works well these. Mix 4 to 8 ounces into 1 gallon of water. Screw the top on and pump and Shake to mix well. Spray the leaves thoroughly. You can see that I have a bunch of trees that I can quickly kill this way.

Mix half round up, half water.Cut your tree down. I just bought the Rancher 460 and I love it. Check out my Rancher 460 Review video. Make sure you wear safety goggles and gloves. I tried to be cool and not wear safety glasses at first but I couldn’t really see with all the wood chips flying in my face.This tree is growing right up through my fence so I am cutting off both trunks.You can see there is a darker inner ring and a lighter outer ring. Drill holes in the lighter outer ring. That is where the tree is living and transfers all its liquids. I am using a 3/8’s inch drill bit. Drill holes all around the stump.Now fill the holes with roundup. This should kill the tree pretty fast. Once tree is dead you can remove the stump by burning it digging out the roots. How To Raise Meat Chickens - Meat Chicken Challenge - Journey To Sustainability Backyardables 2016-05-12 | Meat Chicken Challenge - How To Raise Meat Chickens, Journeytosustainability.com/raising-meat-chickensTo get started all you need is a gallon waterer, tray feeder, heat lamp and a warm place to put your chicks. I use the enclosed part of my chicken tractor, you can also use a large box for the first week or two in the garage but you will need to find a bigger place for them like a shed or even a dog house just make sure it has a door on it.You will need an extension cord for your light. It's not super essential but you can get a timer that will turn the light on during the night and off during the day. This is nice as it gets hotter. Get a heat bulb and lamp to keep your chicks warm and dry.Once you have these things you are ready to get your chicks. I usually purchase my chicks in May since it is warmer weather. I get Cornish Rocks but there are several meat breeds out there. If you are getting them at a local store you will have to stick with what they have. If you are ordering them online then you can choose a from a couple of different breeds.While you are at the store get a bag of chicken starter grower. I usually start my chicks on one bag of this because it is medicated. It doesn’t have antibiotics but will prevent your chicks from getting coccidiosis. Once I finish this bag I will switch over to buying feed in bulk.Make sure your meat chicks always have plenty of clean water. I use a gallon waterer until the chicks get bigger then I will switch to a larger waterer. Charlotte likes to help me a lot.Again all you need is a waterer, food tray, heat lamp and a good place to keep them warm and dry. Once the chicks get bigger and more crowded I will let them start venturing down into the lower part of the chicken tractor. I try and clean the pen once a week because the poop will get the chicks wet. Warm and dry is the key.
