ABOUT D.A. D'AMICO D. A. D'Amico takes his writing far too seriously. He allows his characters to walk all over him, making demands in loud voices, eating all the chips, and wrecking up the joint. If it weren't for their typing skills, he'd throw the bunch of them out. He's had more nearly ninety works published in the last decade in venues such as Analog, Daily Science Fiction, and Shock Totem. He's a winner of L. Ron Hubbard's prestigious Writers of the Future award, volume XXVII, as well as the 2017 Write Well award. Written by Ambrose Bierce Read by Larissa Thompson Music by Kyle Ohori & Ryley Kirkpatrick
Ambrose Bierce was born 10th of 13 children in 1842 to a poor farming Puritan family in Ohio. Later, his family moved to Indiana where he started high school. At 15, he left home and started work as a printer’s devil. Shortly afterwards he went to the Kentucky Military Institute to finish his education. When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army’s 9th Indiana Volunteers as a private. Throughout his military career he fought with distinction in several battles, including Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Sherman’s March to the Sea. By 1863 he received his last promotion to major. During a military expedition to San Francisco in 1866, he left military service to begin his soon to be prolific literary career.
Bierce published his first short story, The Haunted Valley, in 1871 and went on to write 249 short stories, 846 fables, countless newspaper articles, satire pieces, columns, and poems. Much of his writing was published posthumously, including My Favorite Murder and Other Stories. Though he also authored some horror science fiction, his favoured genres were war and supernatural. During his years in San Francisco, Bierce made friends with several notable American authors, Mark Twain among them.
The civil war left him disenfranchised with war, and much of his fiction and satire reflected this attitude. Bierce is also considered one of the pioneers of the psychological horror genre, with his work being considered equal to H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe. His speculative fiction collection, Can Such Things Be? was published in 1893 and contains this episode’s story.
In addition to his writings, both fiction and non-fiction, he worked as an editor for several publications over his 30 year career in San Francisco. In 1872 he moved his family to England, though by the end of 3 years England’s weather aggravated his asthma, prompting their return to California. In 1896 they relocated to Washington, D.C. and Bierce continued to write there until 1914, when he told a friend he would be travelling to Mexico to observe their civil war. He was never heard from again, and his death remains a mystery to this day.
