Train After Sunset in Troutdale 5/5/20

PNW Trains 2023-09-10 | Our video begins with a spectacular red sunset over Troutdale on May 5, 2020. Afterwards, we see a green signal and the clouds roll in to give us some rain. I particularly enjoyed the rain here while editing since I had forgotten how pretty that evening was. I really like the look of the street lights in the rain during these later parts of the video. Lastly, UP C45ACCTEs 5301 and 7431 bring us a fast westbound intermodal train likely heading to Portland's Union Pacific Brooklyn Yard. Unfortunately, I lost focus on my phone here and had to cut the train into two parts to get the focus back, but it was still a cool catch. Once the train passes, we are treated to an awesome distant horn as it keeps heading west in the springtime rain. Enjoy the beautiful evening and night train!

UP 8951 Leads a Mixed Freight Train Through Troutdale OR w/ AC44ACCCA!

PNW Trains 2023-08-13 | On this wet spring afternoon, UP 8951 with a nice crew brings a mixed freight train with lots of cool railcars through Troutdale at a nice clip. Also in tow is an AC44ACCCA locomotive (quite the handle, eh?). These UP locomotives are partially-rebuilt AC6000CWs with new cab controls, or something like that. There are so many AC6000CW variants on the UP these days that it's hard to keep track of!

If anyone knows more about these seemingly rare AC44ACCCAs, please comment below!

UP 2535 Leads a Mixed Freight Train Through Troutdale, OR (4K)

PNW Trains 2023-06-04 | Since the Troutdale searchlights were soon to be replaced by LED Vader signals, I set out one spring afternoon to see if I could get a good shot of the signals on the other side of the Kane Road bridge, something I hadn't really done before. I had a great spot where I could see the train coming from a good distance, where I would be able to see the signals changing colors, and more.

...And then a homeless guy, convinced that he was (late) rapper XXXTentacion, started haranguing me about taking pictures of him (because I was definitely totally doing that!) since he "needed to stay hidden". I left the previously great spot pretty much immediately. At least the guy actually looked like the rapper. Anyways, back to "The Platform", one of the same spots I always shoot from. Not a bad view, but not exactly the right angle to see the front of the signals I wanted to see. And then a few days later, the government decided to lock us down due to COVID-19, and the searchlights were removed before the restrictions were, so I never actually got to see a train passing through those signals from that side of the bridge. Thank you so much to the homeless guy and our government. I love you both so very, very much *eye roll*.

A Snow Train in Troutdale - 3/14/20

PNW Trains 2023-05-21 | An unusual March snowstorm blows through the Portland Metro Area and gives me one last opportunity to capture the Troutdale searchlight signals in winter weather conditions. I included tons of scenic or establishing shots and a couple shots at the end too, as well as the obvious train. This was a very beautiful day as the new spring blossoms were complemented by the late-season snowfall. Also of note is the fact that the train's leading locomotive, UP C44AC 6528, had a K3HL horn at the time. Not sure if it still does, but I love K3HLs so hearing one was a treat!

Enjoy the snowy train and especially the searchlights, as this was actually the very last time they would ever see snow during their time of service in Troutdale. Thanks, searchlights. We miss you. (Although the new signals are also very cool, lol.)

PNW Trains 2023-04-09 | Here we are back in Troutdale again with two cool trains on a cold winter evening. The first had a unique and colorful lashup including UP, CP, and CEFX units. The second gave quite a hornshow by the MOW equipment. Also featured is a big work truck and an electromagnet. Although the low lighting made for shaky and blurry video, I think it still turned out alright. Enjoy the trains! I am so behind on my videos that I think I will be leaving off the Train Specs section for a while until I can get caught up again, unless it's a quick one (while he's away - had to throw in the reference).

Eagle Signal 4-Way Stop Signal in Troutdale, OR (4K)

Railfanning MAX Light Rail in Gresham, OR 12/27/19 - Huge Hornshow and MAX 103! (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-09-05 | We're back on the Blue Line in Gresham at our new spot! In this video we will see numerous MAX trains pass by both east and westbound, as well as the really cool US&S block signals and some smaller US&S signals farther away. There were a couple nice drivers but one in particular gave us a huge horn and bell show! That was a really awesome treat. Peek Traffic Signals in Gresham, OR (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-09-01 | While there is nothing uncommon about this intersection, it is still a brand and design that I have not yet covered on this channel. One slight difference is the black metal poles used for mounting as opposed to the usual gray/silver. As usual, green and red are all LED and yellows are incandescent. The green arrows are also incandescent though. Also featured is a neat LED crosswalk with a flashing hand and countdown. I did not get the walk icon in this video sadly. Anyways, thanks for watching. I know this one is not the most exciting intersection but I still liked the incandescent arrows and the fact that they were Peek signals which aren't too common until you get closer to Portland.

Update: The day after editing this video I drove by this intersection and found out that the flashing yellows are now LEDs. I am unsure of any other changes.

Safetran Tri-Light Signal, Waterfalls, and Bonus Train in the Gorge (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-08-29 | In this short video, we will take a look at a very cool Safetran "Tri-Light" signal I found next to Benson Lake in the Columbia River Gorge. It is an automatic block signal as far as I know, and I am unsure why one side was yellow and the other was flashing yellow. Obviously a train did end up passing but this was after we had left so I don't know what colors the signal was showing when the train passed by. Either way, a cool find and one of the only ones I know of in the Portland area. In addition to the tri-light, the bottom signal facing east is actually an added-on L&W signal, hence the different control boxes. I'm guessing that makes this signal even more unique since it is custom. We also will take a look at a seasonal unnamed waterfall and Wahkeena Falls for a short bit. Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Singer/Eagle Signal Hybrid, 3M PV, and Siemens Traffic Signals in Gresham, OR (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-08-25 | In this edition of our traffic signal series, we visit the intersection of Hogan and Burnside in Gresham, Oregon, just east of Portland. At this intersection are some neat Singer signals, some being 8"8"12" and some being all 12". There are a couple 3M PV signals for the innermost lanes and there are a couple pretty standard Siemens lights as well. We get back to the more unique signals with a four-section Siemens turn signal that has both a green ball and a yellow/green combo right arrow. The last cool thing is the hybrid Singer/Eagle Signal signals that display a green ball and left green arrow at once. The regular three-section ball signal is all Singer but the arrows are just mashed-on Eagle Signal modules. Pretty funny, very unique, and probably quite a rare setup as well if I am to assume correctly. One last note is that the green 8" lights on the Singers are incandescent and some of the yellows on the other signals are too. All others are LEDs. Anyways, not everything here may be super rare but I found it cool enough to tape. Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Rail-Work in Action S11E6: Slow Day in Vancouver w/ AMTK 130, Cascades Tail Fins, & UP EC-4! (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-08-22 | For the first time in almost a year, we have a new Rail-Work in Action episode! This new edition starts off in Troutdale, Oregon, with a Union Pacific Inspection Train parked at Troutdale Siding. On this train is the UP 910701 Boxcar, an old SP flatcar, and the UP EC-4 Inspection Car. A train passes by on the mainline as well. Next, we head to CP Apple Tree in Vancouver, Washington, where this is not much to see action-wise but there are some cool parked trains with an H1 Dash 9 and a red FURX leaser Geep. Vancouver Amtrak is our final stop, where we see the Coast Starlight with Amtrak 130, the Phase 2 Heritage Unit. Also seen is a black FURX leaser unit with a New Cast P5 (the first time I have ever heard one), an entirely-EMD Geep lashup, and an Amtrak Cascades train with no DPU so we can see the "Batman" Tail Fins on the old Talgo 6 Set which is no longer in service. Though the action was slow in Vancouver that day, we still got plenty of trains and tons of cool catches. Thanks for your patience while waiting for new uploads on this channel. I appreciate you all! Midwest Signal and Siemens Traffic Signals in Gresham, OR, w/ Bonus MAX Trains! (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-07-28 | In this video, we travel to Gresham again to see some Midwest Signal Inc. and Siemens traffic signals. In the process we will also see some crosswalk signals, a radar speed signal, a couple bonus MAX trains at the new spot, and get a close-up look at the US&S autoblock signals used by TriMet. Midwest Signal evidently was the predecessor to today's McCain Traffic Supply, hence why they look so much alike. This intersection features the usual green/red LED and yellow incandescent setup on the main road, with all of the ball signals being Midwest Signal and the turn signals being Siemens. One thing to note, however, is that these are three-section turn signals with flashing yellow and green both built into the bottom section. From what I hear this may be uncommon in many areas of the country, but it seems to be somewhat normal in Oregon, at least in the Portland area. Another thing to note is that the signals on the side road are 12"-8"-8" with only red being LED. One last note, I threw in a bunny and some flowers that I recorded as well. PNW Trains 2021-07-25 | On a cold December afternoon, this UP/CP/BNSF lashup led a potash train past numerous MOW vehicles and the old searchlights, which were still in operation at the time of filming. I still have a few videos with the searchlights left before I run out, so there are plenty more trains to see with them. This train was also led by an SD70ACe with a pretty nice horn, just to note. CRAZY Intersection with Econolite, Safetran, 3M PV, Siemens, and McCain Signals in Gresham, OR (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-07-14 | This is probably the most diverse intersection I've ever seen! This intersection of US26-Burnside and Powell in Gresham features Siemens, McCain, Safetran, Econolite, and 3M PVs. How cool is that! All signals are 12", and as usual the yellows are incandescent while the reds and greens are LED. This intersection is unusual since 3M PVs are usually only arrows in Portland, but these 3Ms are ball signals. The McCains also feature slots at the front of their red and green visors to prevent wrong readings. This intersection is so large and has so many different kinds of signals that I actually missed a couple and had to return on a second day to film the rest. Railfanning MAX Light Rail in Gresham, OR 12/14/19

PNW Trains 2021-07-12 | Today we head out to my new location that I teased nearly a year ago! Located near downtown Gresham on the Blue Line, this MAX spot was an amazing find! You can see over 2.5 miles of track from this location, including all stations from Gresham City Hall to Rockwood. As usual, I am not going to say the exact location since it is "my" spot, but I am thinking it's probably fairly easy to find. I would appreciate a mention if anyone decides to film here since as far as I know I am the first one to do so. Anyways, enough location-hogging haha. This spot also includes some sort of US&S Automatic Block Signals, and in this video we got plenty of nice drivers. One even gave us the E-Horn, which I did not know was even a thing prior to that moment. Thank you for your patience during my hiatus, and I hope to upload more regularly again soon. Railfanning Clackamas, OR 11/23/19 w/ Amtrak 184! (4K)

PNW Trains 2021-02-20 | Sorry again for the lack of uploads. I'm doing my best! Anyways, thanks for tuning in again after another short absence. In this video we travel back to our relatively new spot of Clackamas, Oregon, on the UPRR Brooklyn Subdivision. This footage is obviously from way back in 2019 since I try to upload chronologically and I'm very far behind. However, at the time it was big news in the west coast railfan community that Amtrak P42DC No. 184, the Phase IV Paint Heritage Unit, would be on the Coast Starlight for a while. Of course Amtrak had to slap another unit on the front of it, but even getting to see a consist with three engines and having one be a HU was still very cool. A little while after the Starlight passed, I was treated to a bonus freight train with some neat railcars and a nice horn on the leader. As a final thought, I really enjoyed the cold winter atmosphere that day. The lighting was really cool and I like the way the footage turned out. Thanks for watching and I'll see you next time!

Eagle Signal Mark IV and LFE Emergency Signals in Gresham, OR (4K)

PNW Trains 2020-11-26 | I was driving by one day and spotted these neat 12in12in8in-configured signals on Eastman Parkway by the police and fire stations. The ones on the main road are LFE and the ones on the side are Eagle Signal Mark IVs. All appear to be incandescent, which is neat to see. The LFEs are 12in12in8in and the Eagle Signals are all 8 inch. They are called emergency signals because they are always green unless the police or firefighters need priority. Also included is a quick MAX train. Cool little find in my opinion, so I hope you guys enjoy! Thanks for watching and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

McCain PV and Doghouse Traffic Signals in Orient, Oregon (4K)

PNW Trains 2020-11-19 | For our third traffic signal video, I discovered this neat intersection with a unique setup. It's a four way, but it's one of those where one of the roads is coming in at an angle so there are quite a few sets of lights. All of the lights featured are McCain, but those PVs are pretty uncommon as far as I know and even the doghouse was a decent find in my area. The lights all appear to have the usual setup of only yellow being incandescent (all other lights are LED), with the exception of the turn arrows on the doghouse. Rail-Work in Action S11E5: Goodbye Sister Searchlight w/ UP 7400 Leading and 4-IN-1 Lashup!

PNW Trains 2020-11-08 | With the Troutdale Searchlights now retired, it seemed like a good time to officially give them the tribute they deserve. These signals faithfully served Union Pacific Railroad for several decades before being taken out of service in early 2020. Since 2015, they had been the only signals I had ever known. They appeared in nearly every single one of my videos and guided some of the neatest trains through Troutdale. Now in their place stands all-too-common LED Vader Signals made by Safetran. Even the old incandescent Vaders got taken out. Though I have a lot more footage of them left to upload, this video is my official tribute to them since I recorded this footage with their retirement in mind. In the future I may make a "Best of the Searchlights" Compilation, but as you all can probably tell I have been quite busy so it may not happen. Anyways, also featured is a tier 4 GEVO with a 1st Gen. K5HL, UP 7400 leading a train and giving Bobby Case and I a hornshow, and a 4-in-1 lashup with UP, CREX, CEFX, and CP power hauling brand new hoppers out of the Portland Greenbrier/Gunderson plant. PNW Trains 2020-10-21 | Who knew I could make a video about stinkin' traffic signals last for nearly 6 and a half minutes! Well, apparently I can. Anyways, enjoy these MTS (McCain) and what I think are Siemens traffic signals at two intersections in downtown Boring, OR.

The McCain signals are obvious because they say MTS right on them, but I thought the "Bubble Back" ones were probably Siemens. Correct me if I'm wrong, and thanks for watching!

PNW Trains 2020-10-14 | Surprise! Way back when I first introduced the Clackamas Train Spot on this channel, I also hinted at a couple new video ideas/locations to come along with it. This is the new video idea: Traffic Signals! I love train signals and their different indications and designs, so I figured maybe since traffic signals seem to be popular I could get a little into that area as well.

For this first video, I am simply using the intersection at the Clackamas train spot, but I will have many more videos coming out from more locations soon. This intersection features some neat Eagle Signal 12"-8"-8" signals with all of their backboard things still in tact. I heard that this is uncommon to see, but I am not an expert. The turn lights are 3M PV signals. It looks like the green and red are LED while the yellow is incandescent on all the lights, including turn lights. This seems to be a common practice in my area. Another common practice is having whatever brand signal as the regular RYG and having 3Ms in the turn lanes for whatever reason. A New Perspective: Railfanning Troutdale 10/11/20 w/ SD70AH-T4

PNW Trains 2020-10-12 | Check it out! These are the very first trains ever filmed from my newest train spot in Troutdale, Oregon. Since the City of Troutdale finally made the old Bissinger Wool Pullery site into public property, I decided to go exploring and found out that this is a pretty good spot! I would not recommend going alone because there is a lot of graffiti around and there are bound to be some sketchy characters, but overall it's a good addition to the plethora of spots Troutdale has to offer. I'll be coming back for some awesome fall foliage soon. Also featured is a brand new Tier 4 EMD unit trailing, which was cool to see since there aren't many around. Anyways, thanks for watching. End of an Era: Final Trains with the Bissinger Wool Pullery

PNW Trains 2020-09-01 | From the very beginning of my channel, the Bissinger Wool Pullery has always been a prominent building in the background of my videos. Today, we say goodbye to the old factory as it is demolished to make way for something new and hopefully better. Though I still have footage left to upload with the pullery in the background, these were the last two trains I caught chronologically while the building was still standing (the demolition was finished the following morning). Railfanning Troutdale 8/9/19 w/ UP/CP/BNSF Lashup!

PNW Trains 2020-07-19 | In this video we return to our regular spot of Troutdale, Oregon, where we see some of the last days of the Bissinger Wool Pullery. Though it is now gone, I was able to capture a ton of footage over the years with the old building in the back before it was torn down. Besides a waterfront park, I still don't know of any solid plans for the parcel of land once occupied by the old pullery.

As for the trains, we see two neat hopper consists heading to and from Eastport, Idaho, on their way to and from Canada. The first features a nice crew who gave a great hornshow and the second features a UP/CP/BNSF lashup with another CP on the end to boot! Thanks for watching, and enjoy.

Amtrak 75 Leads the Coast Starlight #14 through Clackamas, OR (4K)

PNW Trains 2020-07-12 | In our very first visit to Clackamas, Oregon, we catch Amtrak P42DC No. 75 leading the Northbound Coast Starlight, Train #14. Though the intersection can be a pain to traverse as a pedestrian, the trouble is worth it. There's a decent view in each direction, with mostly trees for a nice backdrop. Though there are no signals, the rail traffic is usually decent enough that you won't be waiting too long. I was happy enough with this location that I have since come back a few times and will continue to do so, so expect more Clackamas videos in the future.
