We are excited to announce Joanna Dudley’s empowering exhibition, ‘WE WILL SLAM YOU WITH OUR WINGS’, on show from May 17.
In this seven-screen video and sound installation, Joanna Dudley presents a transformative narrative: six girls, ages eight to 16, challenge the tragic fates of women in operatic arias, such as Dido, Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Salome, turning them from victims to heroines. In this way, Dudley gives space to unheard voices, and inspires us to reflect on how our present is constructed for us.

This presentation delved into the intricate layers of the work, blending theatricality with profound emotional resonance. This performance is designed to be versatile, capable of being staged at any host museum or venue, and seamlessly incorporating all kinds of local girl groups to forge a connection with each unique community. Dudley was joined by the ethereal voices of the Bulgarian Girls Choir- Sharena Gayda Berlin, violinist Hsuan Huang, and the dynamic all-girls marching band BÄM! Drumline. Together, they transformed the museum with a symphony of singing, shouting, screeching, drumming, marching, and dancing.
The performance interweaves behind-the-scenes documentation and intimate interviews with the original cast members. These segments provide a candid glimpse into the minds of the girls and young women who brought this installation to life, sharing their personal reflections and the transformative impact of this collective endeavor.

Instead of the lavish depiction of men, a young girl between the age of 8 to 16 stands in her own frame, in her own regalia and holding her own stance of power. The young girls combined are the leaders, the army, the chorus, the pack, the collective and the future voice. Joanna Dudley, the performer known for her ground-breaking collaborations with William Kentridge, is the chieftain and mentor, encouraging the girls to take autonomy over their own voices and to create the world afresh.

A music theatre installation where 2 characters are placed in a room that is tipped at an angle of 90° – 2005
Colours May Fade is the story of two people placed in a room tipped at a 90° angle from which there is no exit, giving the audience a new perspective on the room and its inhabitants. The audience watches the show as if through a camera mounted on the ceiling. Cut off from the outside world, time has moved them to create their own language. Time and space have lost all meaning, our perception is deluded and Kafka is never far away. Colours May Fade was created and performed by Joanna Dudley, with the dancer, singer and choreographer Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, and co-created and designed by Rufus Didwiszus. It was produced and premiered at the Schaubuehne, Berlin.
"The decisive, unsettling element is the incredible stage design by Rufus Didwiszus. The spectator takes the bird’s eye view from above. The man and the woman “are sitting“ at the table, however, technically speaking, they’re in a hanging position. They are in constant danger of falling. Their virtuosic squawking and twittering is intertwined in a canon of the hightest quality musically. The balance of the of the two actors are permanently and wonderfully at stake." Die Welt

The performance for museums has been developed by soprano Joanna Dudley with William Kentridge, who have worked together on numerous productions by Kentridge for the stage. The opposite of a classic guided tour, this is a moment of pure poetic pleasure that puts artworks against interpretation as part of a theatrical mise-en-scène.

created and performed by Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola and Joanna Dudley.
This spectacular musical theatre production has attracted attention from audiences all around the world. An exquisite couple sit opposite one another at a long, formally set dining table and play host to this elegant evening. Between them an intimate and heartbreakingly beautiful conversation takes place- not through words but music. The virtuosic couple are the choreographer, dancer and counter tenor Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola and singer, performer and creator Joanna Dudley. Especially for this evening, Juan and Joanna share with their guests their most prized passion- their personal collection of toys laid out carefully on the dining table before them. Juan and Joanna musically convey the long history of love- sung, whistled and played on toy pianos, kazoos, music boxes, cowbells, a toy car, a yellow rabbit, a red bear and a marching band glockenspiel. The Sephardic renaissance, English Baroque, Italian arias, American blues and Spanish pop songs undergo delicate transformations, slowly evolving with love and tenderness. My Dearest My Fairest was created for the 2000 Berlin Theatertreffen and and was later awarded the Australian Critics Award for the most innovative performance. In it’s continuing travel around the world My Dearest My Fairest has received a dedicated cult following.Paper Music excerptJoanna Dudley2021-05-27 | Paper Music excerpts Berlin
Paper Music is the latest project in the long-time, ongoing collaboration between Johannesburg-born visual artist William Kentridge and his South African compatriot Philip Miller. Their artistic partnership dates back to Kentridge’s 1993 film Felix in Exile, part of his celebrated Soho Eckstein series for which Miller wrote the score. Paper Music is a witty, poignant, a gently subversive song-and-film cycle; it unites films, mostly animations based on William Kentridge’s charcoal and ink drawings, with live musical performances by vocalists Ann Masina and Joanna Dudley, pianist Vincenzo Pasquariello, and composer Philip Miller. A fascinating exploration of the relationships between sound and image.

BERLINER ZEITUNG
Joanna's collaborative work with the ingenious set designer Rufus Didwiszus has culminated in a wide range of projects that fall between performance, installation, music video and opera. Their work has led to collaborations with the infamous electro noise musician SchneiderTM, the absolute vocal masters of the Ars Nova, Capilla Flamenca and the creative ingenuity of dancer and singer Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola known also for his work with DV8, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Sasha Waltz. The works in these pieces feature the music of Joanna's father, the composer, lecturer and conductor Grahame Dudley.
Who Killed Cock Robin? is a performance created by Joanna Dudley and Rufus Didwiszus. It tells the story of a boy (Joanna Dudley), who one evening discovers a deserted house where he meets his six guardians (Capilla Flamenca). These men take the boy on a strange voyage using ancient ceremonies and old hunting traditions. They travel through foreign territories on the tones of 14th century Ars Nova music and its contemporary adaptations.
In Who Killed Cock Robin? Dudley and Didwiszus broaden their collaboration to include the renown early music vocal and instrumental ensemble Capilla Flamenca and the Swiss video artist Samuel Dématraz, whose highly unique work creates a environment of unease and dark beauty. Specially featured music composed by Grahame Dudley.

LOUIS & BEBE
1 COUPLE 3 LIVES 3 DEATHS 9 SONGS
LOUIS & BEBE are a maverick musical couple. Joanna Dudley is a long time music theatre performer and diva of Javanese pop and Dirk Dresselhaus has one famed foot in the electro pop scene and the other firmly planted in the world of improvised noise. Together they are LOUIS & BEBE.
Whether brother and sister, evil twins or fated lovers; they are two sides of the same coin.
LOUIS & BEBE is a journey in 3 chapters, from childhood- The Landing (Reaching for the Red Star Sky), through to the abundant beauty of life in full bloom- The Garden (Portraits of a Zoomorphic Couple) and finally death- The Graveyard (A Night with Two Moons). From human to animal and animal to vegetable, the life lines of LOUIS & BEBE are punctuated by the ringing of bells, the calling of birds and accompanied by their own sound track of song, pop & noise.

Guided tours in museums intend to give visitors a closer understanding of the art work. On the other hand, every text explaining a work of art automatically places it in the past, immobilizes it, silences it. In this performance developed by William Kentridge and soprano Joanna Dudley, they work against the museification of art works. The performance “A Guided Tour of the Exhibition: For Soprano with Handbag” allows the pictures to defend themselves and to resist interpretations. It is both an accompanying programme to the exhibition and its refutation.

“Like a code being delivered from another world and something embodying Cleopatra, an evil fairy cerberus and an almond eyed sphinx, Joanna Dudley is "The Scorpionfish". TANZNETZ BERLIN
Joanna Dudley is The Scorpionfish - a solitary, strikingly strange and unusual species. The Scorpionfish morphs from one creature to another blurring the parameters between the environment, the woman, artificiality and reality. The Scorpionfish sings the beautiful and sentimental kroncong - Javanese pop of the 1960s and a heady mixture of South East Asian, Hawaiian and American croon. BERLINER ZEITUNG
Who Killed Cock Robin? is a bizarre and poetic journey of initiation, children's fantasy and dark nightmare. The performance of Joanna Dudley and Rufus Didwiszus reveals scenes of dark beauty and leads the audience into a surreal world of ritual and ceremony, to the accompaniment of Ars Nova music, a 14th century genre of vocal music, masterfully adapted by the renowned vocal and instrumental ensemble Capilla Flamenca.
This is the story of a fat little boy (Joanna Dudley) who one evening leaves the safety of his home to set out on a journey. On the way he meets six bearded guardians (Capilla Flamenca). Drawn to these men, the boy entrusts himself to the care of this strict community. A journey of transformation begins, accompanied by expressive singing and the video compositions of Swiss artist Samuel Dématraz, whose works conjure up an atmosphere of disquieting, dark beauty. Seductive and powerful, Who Killed Cock Robin? explores traditional narratives, alternating between animism, transitional rites and fantasy, and in doing so continually blurs the border between reality and fiction.

The Scorpionfish dances ancient Javanese court dances which had been kept secret for centuries and performed only for the King alone. Foi revolves around the simple question: what do you believe in? Set in a triangular post 9-11 site designed by Rufus Didwiszus, peculiar protagonists wake up realizing they survived a disaster and try to find a way out of this no exit place. They are surrounded by intangible, invisible angel-like dancing beings, who manipulate the gestures and actions of the colorful actors, sometimes tender, sometimes ill-intentioned. Each time they think they're safe, another catastrophe hits them, from an earthquake to a gas leak to being slaughtered by a hammer. Yet every time the chatty characters survive, as if something was still unfinished, their destiny unfulfilled.Toms SongJoanna Dudley2021-05-26 | by Joanna Dudley and Rufus Didwiszus
"The installation "Tom's Song" (2006) is quite stirring for several reasons, the music is beautiful, the story behind the music is heart warming, it is technically involved and it is all analog!"
RHIZOME
Tom played ukulele, whistled and wrote songs, which he himself sung under his stage name The Golden Oldie. He performed when he felt inclined to at the Senior Citizens Club and rehearsed in his garden shed. Tom’s Song is an installation, which accompanies Tom singing the last song he could remember to sing at 96 years old - It’s June in January.
It’s June in January
Because I’m in love
It always is spring in my heart
with you in my arms.
The snow is just white blossoms
that fall from above.
And here is the reason, my dear,
Your magical charms.
The night is cold
The trees are bare
But I can feel the scent of roses in the air.
It’s June in January
Because I’m in love
But only because I’m in love with you.
Oh the night is cold!
Won’t it be to bear?
But I can feel the scent of roses in the air.
It’s June in January
Because I’m in love
But only because I’m in love with you.
A wooden container can be entered via a door. Old portable LP players and their speakers create a floor covering and music boxes with their pianola-like paper scores hang down from the ceiling. An elevated pathway allows the spectator to walk through the room. Each music box and LP player have their own part to play in the mechanical orchestra whose prime role is to accompany the one LP of Tom singing his song and accompanying himself on the ukulele.
Every LP player has it’s own specifically composed LP. Whistled harmonies, the strumming of banjos and tolling of bells create the multi-voiced LP accompaniment for Tom’s song. The hanging music box scores are paper cards punctured with holes and fed through the metal teeth of the music boxes, which hang from the ceiling above. As with the LP players, each music box plays it’s own composed score to create an accompanying orchestra for Tom’s song. Mechanically operated, each LP player and music box will start at the same time. Once each instrument has come to the end of it’s own score, they collectively re-start to play it over again.
In Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bete a garden shed holds the jewels, treasures and powers of the Beast. In the shed of Tom’s Song, we find a hanging mechanical sound garden of memories and song and is dedicated to all elderly men and their ukuleles.LOUIS & BEBE promoJoanna Dudley2021-05-26 | LOUIS & BEBE

An operatic video installation for an army of six girls and one lady. We have been shown that a new order is paramount. These girls may just help take us there.
"We Will Slam You With Our Wings" is a video and sound installation comprising of seven life size screens. Each screen depicts a 19th century imperialistic portrait with one noticeable difference.
"We Will Slam You With Our Wings" draws on another quintessential 19th century form and turns it on it’s head- the dramatic soprano’s death aria in opera. Each girl carefully recreates an operatic death scene representing the squirmish heights of patriarchal fantasy. However, in their versions, the tragic fates of Dido, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Salome, Brünnhilde and Suor Angelica take a decided turn for the better. Rather than being lead to their deaths as we have grown to expect, this female army leads you to watch them loudly, playfully, proudly and unnervingly conquer.
Each screen runs simultaneously, creating not only a highly choreographed choir but also a polyphonic operatic sound score.
Patriotic speeches from the world’s male dictators and leaders proclaiming the declaration of war are not left unscathed. They are rewritten, re-screamed and re-performed in an entirely different way again, and for very different purposes and outcomes. Powerful in their collective consciousness, the girls spawn an altogether different kind of social order, based on their own rules and their own wishes.
The girl’s army is menacing but heartbreakingly touching, tragic but humorous, and sardonic but honest. The army is quintessentially feminine, yet the female embodies excessively male characteristics, making them her own to create a new being. The hunted becomes the hunter, the tamed controls, and the dying beauty takes her own revenge.
This video sketch includes 3 of the 6 girls: Tabatha Howard, Ruth Alice McIlleron and Mpho Takane and is the result of the first filming in Johannesburg.
