This decision also lifted the United States Armed Forces' Combat Exclusion Policy for aviation positions, which had prohibited women from serving in combat roles since 1948. The policy was lifted for all assignments in 2013. This video is from The U.S. Air Force Television News, May 21, 1993. Over 900 of these workhorse infantry landing craft were produced from 1943 to 1945, initially for the U.S. and Royal Navies, and later distributed to many Allies. LCI-Ls could carry up to 220 soldiers, with stacked bunk beds for long voyages & their basic equipment. (Larger & slower LSTs were used for landing Tanks and heavy equipment.) Typically these ships delivered their cargos soon after beaches were secured using lighter landing craft like Higgins Boats for the first attack, although in some cases, they were part of the initial assault. 4 × Oerlikon 20 mm cannon (one forward, one amidships, two aft) provided air defense, as well as direct fire on the beach. LCI-Ls were ubiquitous in virtually all medium to large scale amphibious assaults from Sicily through D-Day in Normandy and the Island Hopping campaigns in the Pacific. Their relatively high top speed of 18 knots, 500 nmi range combined with a shallow draft and rapidly deployed landing ramps meant they could move in, deliver their troops & equipment and move out in a very short time. During World War 2 the Soviets weren't interested in long range strategic bombing and didn't develop a bomber that was on par with the best Allied aircraft. Fortunately for them, late in the War a few American Boeing B-29s on missions to Japan landed in Estern Siberia, damaged or lost. Stalin ordered them secretly copied down to the rivets and they were in large scale production by 1949.This surprising development presented an immediate challenge to the Western Allies. The RAFs "Central Fighter Command" worked with United States Air Force units stationed in Europe to produce this film on tactics to take on the Soviets ersatz Superfortresses. The USAF supplied the bombers, the RAF the Gloster Meteor & DH Vampire fighters. Robert Scott was produced by the U.S.A.F. in 1987. In 1941, during World War 2 Scott joined Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers" American Volunteer Group (AVG) in China as a "guest pilot," fighting the Japanese while still in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew several missions daily and learned the Flying Tiger's combat tactics. He piloted a Curtiss P-40 as a single plane escort for transports and on ground attack missions. In July 1942, the AVG was disbanded and most of the pilots were integrated into the Army Air Corp's new 23rd Fighter Group in in China. Scott, who had demonstrated his ability with the A.V.G. was named it's commanding officer. Colonel Scott flew 388 combat missions with 925 hours from July 1942 to October 1943, shooting down 13 Japanese aircraft, one of America's earliest flying aces. He returned to the U.S.A. in October 1943 to become deputy for operations at the A.A.F School of Applied Tactics at Orlando Army Air Base, Florida and wrote a best selling memoir about his time with the Flying Tigers, "God is My Co-Pilot," made into a Hollywood movie in 1945, starring Dennis Morgan as Robert Scott. Triple Jet Ace Maj James "Jabby" Jabara gives an account of his squadron's intense encounter with MiG 15s in May 1953 during the Korean War. You can tell he's still pumping plenty adrenaline. In 1953 air combat was still toe to toe "guns only." He got one MiG himself, but he was sure he'd been shot up in the process. A close call. This was filmed right after he landed at Kimpo Airbase. Jabara had 15 victories against MiGs, second to America's leading jet ace in Korea, Joseph C McConnell Jr's 16. The novel solution was to ship aircraft in crates to the port of Takoradi, Gold Coast, West Africa. (Modern Ghana). The aircraft were assembled there, tested and then flown in stages along a Trans-Africa route by RAF Ferry Command pilots via a chain of Allied airfields, to Cairo in Egypt. Takoradi already had an airstrip which was enlarged to handle increased traffic and a large facility was built for assembling the planes. The first replacement flight took off in September 1940. The goal was 140 aircraft a month. Though never exceeding 103 per month, 5000+ aircraft were flown over the route by October 1943, including Hurricanes, Blenheims, Marylands, Beaufighters, Spitfires and Curtiss P-40s - which were shipped across the Atlantic from the USA. II. The aircraft was still top secret and hadn't been shown to the public. Unlike the previous Tempest Vs, which used an inline Napier Sabre II 24-cylinder engine, the Tempest IIs featured a Bristol Centaurus 18 cylinder radial engine and incorporated cooling system design features learned from a captured German FW 190. The armament consisted of four 20 m.m. Hispano guns mounted two in each main plane, outboard of the propeller. Maximum speed was 442 mph (711 km/h) at 15,200 ft (4,633 m) and climb rate to the same altitude took four and a half minutes compared with five minutes for the Tempest Mk. V. The service ceiling was increased to 37,500 ft (11,430 m). The aircraft shown here is the initial fighter version, followed later by a fighter bomber. Tempest IIs were intended for combat against Japan, part of "Tiger Force," a long-range bomber force based on Okinawa. The Pacific War ended before they could be deployed.XF-85 Goblin Parasite Fighter Flight Tests 1948ZenosWarbirds2023-03-18 | The Goblin was designed as a "parasite" defensive fighter that could be carried, released and retrieved by intercontinental bombers like the Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" on missions that were to long to be accompanied by conventional aircraft. The specifications were developed at the end of World War 2 and McDonnell Aircraft was the awarded the contract. The USAF was hesitant to role out such a radical design in large numbers, so they ordered only two prototypes, christened the XF-85 "Goblin." Flight testing using a specially modified B-29 as a carrier plane were conducted in 1948-49. Despite ongoing modifications during the test period, the program was cancelled in October 1949. Docking with the carrier aircraft was very difficult, even in the hands of a skilled test pilot and the Goblin was not competitive with then current jet fighter interceptors. At the same time, air refueling from tanker aircraft was being developed that greatly increased the range of conventional fighters.Grumman F6F Hellcat One Wheel Carrier Landing - 1944ZenosWarbirds2023-03-15 | There's an old saying, "Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing." That especially applies in this case where a skilled U.S. Navy pilot brought his F6F Hellcat down on a carrier deck with only one of his wheels down. The other landing gear wouldn't extend. Not only did he walk away from the landing, the aircraft looks in pretty good shape so it could return to action after some field repairs below deck. Call for a Sky Hook. The British began using a system like this to retrieve mail in remote locations in the 1920s. As in this film, a line was stretched between two poles that would be snagged by an approaching airplane. The line was connected to a cargo sack, which was winched up into a plane. The U.S Army Air Force wanted a way to rescue airmen from remote locations during World War 2 and & began trials of their own. After a number of tests using sheep, the system was perfected and first human volunteer was successfully extracted by an aircraft from the ground on September 5, 1943, immortalized in this film. It was then used successfully during World War 2 and after - even for retrieving Gliders! Inventor Robert perfected the system in the 1950s working with the CIA & Air Force, using a weather balloon, nylon line & harness that could be dropped anywhere. The aircraft would snag the line below the balloon and bring up the passenger. This advanced system was christened "Sky Hook."RAF 10 Ton Tessie Earth Quake Bunker Busters in Action 1945ZenosWarbirds2023-02-24 | 10 Ton Tessies (AKA "Grand Slams') were developed for the RAF to be dropped from specially modified Lancasters on hardened targets like U Boat Pens & coastal gun batteries, bridges and communication centers. The image quality of surviving copies this film is variable. This is a new restoration- now in HD. The critical first four flight tests of the XB-70A over 34 days at Edwards AFB are shown in detail culminating in the aircraft's first supersonic flight (with an B-58 Hustler chase plane!). As might be expected, these early flights included some dramatic moments, including an in flight engine flame out and one of the landing gear bursting into flames during touch down. But, as mission chief test pilot Col Al White says, "if there were no problems during testing, you wouldn't need test pilots or test flights." You'll see the unflappable Col White and copilot Col Joe Cotton work the sleek Valkyrie through a series of critical tests, including landing gear, flaps, flight controls, advanced hydraulic systems, first deployment of the folding wing tips and more. A highlight of the film is a press conference/debriefing by the XB-70 test flight team. As you'll see, there's nothing "routine" about testing a revolutionary and extremely complex aircraft like the XB-70A Valkyrie.
The super size, supersonic XB-70 was conceived to meet a specification from the Strategic Air Command issued in the early 1950s for a high-altitude bomber that could fly three times the speed of sound, and was the culmination of the "higher, faster" school of bomber design going back to the B-29. The B-70 was given the go ahead over a competing Convair atomic powered design. But, by the end of the decade, due to funding constraints, improvements in Soviet surface-to-air missiles and a new emphasis on cheaper to build ICBMs, the combat bomber specification was dropped and only two XB-70s were actually produced as research aircraft for the study of aerodynamics, propulsion and supersonic flight.
The North American design was a huge, sleek, delta winged aircraft with an added canard, powered by six General Electric YJ93 after burning turbojet engines, with a thrust of nearly 30,000 pounds each. Gross weight was above 500,000 pounds. The six engines were housed side-by side in the rear of the large under fuselage box, fed by a variable-inlet system with a series of movable ramps, optimizing the airflow into the engines at varying Mach numbers. Maximum speed was 1,982 mph at 75,550 feet. The Valkyrie was built of stainless-steel honeycomb sandwich panels and titanium and was designed to use "compression lift" when the shock wave generated by supersonic speeds supported part of the aircraft's weight. For improved supersonic stability, the Valkyrie could droop its wingtips as much as 65 degrees.
The No.1 XB-70 made its initial flight on Sept. 21, 1964, and achieved supersonic flight on Oct. 14th. The No. 2 airplane first flew on July 17, 1965, but on June 8, 1966, it crashed following a mid-air collision. Released near Nagoya at specific times of the year, they ascended to about 30,000' and road prevailing winds, traveling at about 100mph, taking about four days to reach the West Coast. A set of relatively simple instruments controlled altitude and release of small incendiary bombs designed to set fire to forests, crops and flammable structures. Some of them made it all the way, but without causing significant damage. The U.S. Navy recovered a few that crashed & failed to explode to study them and to recreate the replicas shown & explained in this fascinating film. The A-36 was the ground attack variant of the P-51 Mustang and was known as "the Invader" This exciting film includes incredible cockpit views of screaming, nearly vertical dive bombing runs. This is very rare color combat footage of an A-36A fighter-bomber squadron in action in Sicily. I compiled and edited this unique extended restored color version of the film using multiple sources. The A36A was equipped with the Mustang's original Allison engine, as opposed to the Rolls Royce Merlin adapted so successfully in the high altitude escort versions, which worked just fine for low level work. Note the quad 20mm canons on this fast and powerful attack plane, very unusual on an American fighter. You'll also see ground crews doing their critical support work, including fueling, rearming and maintaining these sleek birds. Hidden gems in this film are up close views of captured or destroyed Axis aircraft, including an He 111 and a very rare color view of an intact Italian Macchi 202 "Folgore" in full desert cammo. And yes, I know there was another US aircraft introduced later in World War 2 also called "The Invader," the Douglas A-26. Apparently, the Army Air Force really liked that name. The raid was led by Group Captain Percy Charles "Pick" Pickard, (DSO & Two Bars, DFC), who had gained fame in 1941 in the film “Target for Tonight” showing a Vickers Wellington night attack on a rail yard. He flew more than 100 missions after that. Pickard and his navigator were both killed at Amiens. The raid had mixed results and remains somewhat controversial to this day (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Jericho) * R.A.F. Boston Bombers on a Ramrod Mission to Occupied France -1943. The “Boston” was an export version of the American Douglas “Havoc” medium attack bomber sent to the U.K. “Ramrod” missions were quick strikes across the English Channel, in this case against armament factories near Dinan in Brittany in occupied France, a short hop from England. As was often the case, this mission is flown at high speed against specific targets at very low level, for which the Boston was well suited. (Mosquitoes flew similar missions.) The Germans extensively co-opted French industrial plants and converted them to supply them with War material - everything from aircraft engines to torpedoes and more. These facilities were mostly staffed with French workers or people brought in from other occupied countries. Attacking them was authorized by the Free French government in exile as necessary to liberate their country. Although precautions were taken, more than 60,000 French civilians died from Allied bombing during the German Occupation – a terrible price. * South African Air Force 2 Squadron Operates Spitfire Vc dive bombers from Palata, Italy 1943-1944. This film is unusual for a couple of reasons. A relatively small number of Spitfire Vc Dive Bombers were produced and were rarely seen and South African Air Force (SAAF) units didn't get a lot of coverage. Spit Vc armaments were upgraded to either a 50 cal. machine gun plus a 20mm canon or two 20mm canon (both versions are shown here) and modified to carry 250 bombs – a light load compared to other aircraft. Later in he War Spitfire IX were modified to carry up to 1000 lbs of bombs, but it was still not a very effective dive bomber, capable of only relatively shallow dives with limited accuracy and limited to a short range of less than 100 miles. The R.A.F Typhoons were much more effective, as were American P-47s & P-51s. The Mk IID went into production in 1942, with additional armor for the pilot, radiator and engine. Initially supplied with Rolls-Royce canons that carried 12 rounds, they were soon upgraded to the Vickers S canons that carried 15 rounds. There was a Browning .303 machine gun in each wing. Mk IIDs were lethal ground attack aircraft. The Hurricane was a notably stable gun platform and the additional weight of guns and armor and drag didn't prohibitively effect handling, but top speed and range were significantly reduced. This film shows 6 Squadron operating out of an airfield in either Egypt or Libya, supporting the British 8th Army. I have used digital video technology to restore this film. For more info see @ZenosWarbirds3 Ways to Cross Dragons Teeth on the Siegfried Line 1944 HDZenosWarbirds2022-10-25 | There's been a rise in interest in "Dragon's Teeth" anti-tank barriers since the Russians started constructing them as part of highly visible defense lines in their temporarily occupied territory in Ukraine. Previously, during World War 2 they were an easily recognized feature of the Germans "Siegfried Line" fortifications built on Germany's Western border with France, a response to the Maginot Line. Although fearsome in appearance, they proved to be easily surmountable as demonstrated by the 23rd Engineers of the 3rd Armored Division in the Fall of 1944. No doubt the flimsy "Teeth" the Russians are distributing will be easily overcome by the resourceful Ukrainians. #NAFO This film is from raw, unedited footage from the National Archives. As the war was winding down in Europe in 1945, there was still fierce fighting in the Pacific. The Japanese occupied Island of Borneo was a major source of petroleum and rubber for their war effort, and was therefore a high priority target for Allied strategy. The Borneo campaign lasted from the end of April - July 1945. Australian troops carried out offensive operations, with additional air, naval and logistical support from Britain and America. Free Dutch forces also contributed. These films were shot when they happened by the American 6th Army Air Force Combat Camera Unit (6th AAFCCU) cameramen from April 31st through June 26th, focusing on close air support for amphibious landings at strategic locations around the huge island, aimed at seizing ports and oil refineries, and laying the foundation for Australian troops advancing inland. The image quality of surviving of these very rare films “is what it is.” I have done what I can to restore them using advanced digital techniques. A couple of notes. 1) Strafing is pronounced "strah fing" here, a common and acceptable pronunciation at the time. 2) The films focus on American air support operations because they were shot by U.S. Army cameramen assigned to American units. These are battlefield reports, not meant to be an all inclusive overview of the Borneo campaign or those who participated in it.

They set up positions on a ridge and aim indirect fire at Germans units in the forest. I created this mini documentary from recently discovered silent, unedited footage. For more info see youtube.com/user/ZenosWardsWW2 German “Atlantic Wall - Fortifications & Armaments -1944 HDZenosWarbirds2022-07-11 | New scenes including high quality footage you wont see anywhere else! After the invasion and occupation of France, Germany built a string of fortifications stretching from the Bay of Biscay to Norway, including the Channel Islands, known as the "The Atlantic Wall" to repel any attempt by Allied Forces to launch offensive operations. Only the dense fortifications built at Pas de Calais, the shortest and most likely invasion route, could reasonably be called a "Wall,” the rest were a string of strong points, including fortified cities like Cherbourg & Brest, with reinforced beach defenses at likely landing spots in between. More than 600,000 laborers were involved in construction, including many Frenchman unwillingly drafted by the Vichy government, German subcontractors, and workers imported from abroad. "Organisation Todt," who also built "The Siegfried Line," was in charge. These scenes, from films produced by the German Propaganda Ministry, focus mostly on heavy fortifications near Calais and were intended to reassure the German people that they were protected by a virtually invulnerable "Fortress Europe." Heavy guns were installed to attack shipping and bombard the English Coast near Dover as well as repel amphibious landings. You'll see everything from small pill boxes housing light machine guns to massive reinforced concrete bunkers with repurposed naval guns, artillery seized abroad and that could fire shells up to 406mm – 16" and huge railway guns on tracks so they could move in and out of bunkers . Some of the fortified locations seen here include the massive "Todt Battery" at Cap Gris Nez and “Battery Lindeman.” You'll see several examples of railway guns, including the KRUPP 28 CM K5(E), some mounted on huge turntables to provide a wide arc of fire. But, like many "walls" built throughout history, including the Great Wall of China and the Maginot Line, the promised security and invulnerability of the Atlantic Wall proved to be to be an illusion on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.

This 1957 episode from the U.S. Army's "Big Picture" TV series, "Armored Combat Power," shows that many of the weapons platforms used in combined arms offensive warfare today are remarkably similar to those employed in 1950s cold war scenarios -- with some obvious differences. Man portable anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, and "smart" weapons like drones were in in their infancy and their profound influence on the battlefield was yet to come. But tanks, APCs and armored self-propelled artillery like 105 & 155mm howitzers were very similar in form and function to those used today. Close support artillery and tactical air strikes softened up enemy positions, followed by tanks supported by armored infantry. But, as you'll see, the use of tactical nuclear weapons fired by canons or delivered by mobile missiles like the "Honest John" were an integral part of NATO's Cold War arsenal at that time, designed to offset the massive numerical superiority of the Warsaw Pact in conventional arms. (Be sure to turn away and cover your eyes to protect from that nuclear flash!) The program was filmed at the U.S. Army's huge facility at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1957. The first part is a live fire static demonstration that highlights the capabilities of the weapons platforms along with the composition of the various elements of the combined arms team – tank & APC platoons, artillery, air reconnaissance & close air support, field engineers, helicopters and more. The second part of the program shows a simulated combined arms attack on an enemy unit dug in on high ground, including a tactical nuke strike. No, it's not very realistic – it was simply designed to give the American Public and idea of the composition and capabilities of the Army, shown by local T.V. Stations. I restored this film for HD. It tells the story of the American Submarine force in World War 2, focusing on the Pacific Theater. Pound for pound in terms of ship tonnage sunk, U.S. subs produced results far beyond their relatively small numbers and struck a major blow to the Japanese war effort. "Victory at Sea" was produced in the 1950's, soon after the War was over, so the producers were able to comb through hundreds of hours of documentary footage, much of which has subsequently been lost, so you'll see scenes you won't see anywhere else. And as a bonus, there are scenes from captured Japanese films too, adding a unique perspective. And last but not least, Richard Rogers, who wrote the music for "Oklahoma!," "The King and I" and many more hit Broadway musicals wrote the award winning score, which became a best selling album. That alone makes it worth seeing - but something has always been lacking. For the first time anywhere, using surviving archival photos taken at the time as a reference, we've been able to put names to many faces, including 56th FG CO Hubert “Hub” Zemke and legendary aces like Major Dave Schilling, Captain Walker “Bud” Mahurin, Major Gerald “Jerry” Johnson and many more. And using aircraft databases, we've been able to match plane unit I.Ds with the pilots inside. So when you see P-47D “UN-B” taxi by ready for takeoff, we've identified it as “Bat Outta Hell,” flown by 1st Lt Gordon E Batdorf, 63 F.S. and superimposed a wartime picture of him in the corner of the screen. One of our long term missions has been to identify and thereby pay tribute to the previously anonymous men & women shown in these films and preserve their individual contributions for the historical record. Very satisfying work. Probably due to war time censorship, out of all the pilots and personnel shown, only fighter Ace Francis “Gabby” Gabreski, then CO of the Group's 65th Fighter Squadron, is identified by name in the original film. And last but not least, we've done a scene by scene digital restoration of the video and audio, made from the best archival copy of the film available. You won't see this quality anywhere else! To maximize usage of available aircraft and personnel, squadrons often flew two a day “Doubleheader” missions. You'll see base operations in England followed by Marauders striking a wide variety of locations including supply depots, enemy airfields & more. The first mission would launch at first light, form up and fly to France or other nearby destinations in German occupied Northern Europe, drop their loads and return to base in England. Then all aircraft would refuel & rearm in 45 minutes while crews grabbed a quick lunch, and then immediately take off to fly another mission that afternoon. Missions were flown at ten to twelve thousand feet and encountered heavy FLAK coming and going. Highlights include scenes featuring the legendary 323rd Bomb Group “White Tailed Marauders” identifiable by the white stripes on their tails, B-26 “Truman's Folly” that flew 177 missions and a 19 year old pilot belly landing a damaged B-26 with only one landing gear down, sustaining minimal damage. The Group, part of the Ninth Air Force, had three Fighter Squadrons: the 353rd, 355th & 356th. On the night of D-Day, June 6th, 1944, they escorted Douglas C-47s towing paratroop gliders to Normandy. They had no previous experience with night escorts and - as you'll see - something they weren't very happy about doing. After completing that mission they returned to their base at Boxted Airdrome & took off very early on June 7th to fly combat air patrol over the D-Day landing beaches. These are interviews with 354 F.G. pilots filmed immediately after the morning mission, still wearing flight gear. You'll see & hear 354th F.G. CO Col. George R. Bicknel, and Squadron leaders Maj. Jack T. Bradley (353rd), Capt. Robert W. Stephens (355th) and Maj Richard E. Turner (356th), along with some of the Groups most experienced pilots. Most of them weren't identified on film, but we were able to name them using archival photos. Live sound recording in the field was rare. There's a lot of background noise & “hum" on the original audio track, which is probably why the film wasn't, but we were able to virtually eliminate it using state of art digital processing.

HDZenosWarbirds2021-08-18 | Exclusive Documentary in HD! Meet the crew of B-17F “Knock Out Dropper” and follow them on a maximum effort bombing mission to the hit the ball bearing plant at Ekner, West of Berlin. This is a fictionalized recreation a mission made during World War to show bomber crews in training back in the U.S.A. in the 3rd Air Force what to expect when they went overseas. It's a combination of footage of an actual "Knockout Dropper" crew supplemented with actors and combat scenes from a wide variety of sources. Knockout Dropper wasn't just any B-17. She was one of the first "Flying Fortresses" to land with the 303rd Bomb Group in Molesworth England in 1942 and one of the first to enter combat. Flying with the 359th Bomb Squadron, she was the first 8th Air Force B-17 to complete 50 missions and the first to complete 75, earning her the title of "Champ of the E.T.O." In total, she flew a remarkable 88 missions before being retired and flown back to tour the U.S.A. I've added a "Knockout Dropper Scrapbook" after the film honoring some of the crews that flew her on notable missions as well as background info and photos of Molesworth, the B-17F and the 359th Bomb Squadron & the 303rd Bomb Group. Didn't format properly the first time) Academy Award Nominee! The fight for the island of IWO Jima has been called “The toughest 26 Days in Marine Corps history.” The Japanese spent 20 years turning the 8 square mile island rock into “The Gibraltar of the Pacific,” honeycombed with miles of deep tunnels, pill boxes, block houses and gun emplacements sheltered in galleries dug deep into Mount Suribachi. Located roughly half way between the Marianas & Japan, Iwo was a valuable piece of real estate for a number of reasons. 1) The Japanese were using it as an airbase for costly raids on B-29 bases in the Marianas. 2) Once seized, it could be used as an emergency strip for landing crippled B-29s who otherwise couldn’t make it home 3) The airstrip was close enough to Japan to allow long range P-51 fighters to escort B-29s round trip & attack target of opportunity in Southern Japan. Starting on June 15, 1944, the US Army Air Force and US Navy bombed and shelled the island for nine months, but when Marines of the 3rd, 4th & 5th Divisions landed on February 15th, 1945, Japanese defenses were largely intact, pouring withering fire on the beaches. What followed was what one Marine described as “26 days in Hell.” 70,000 US Marines & Navy Seabees faced off against dug in Japanese forces, who rarely surrendered or retreated. Of the 22,060 Japanese soldiers entrenched on the island, 18,844 died either from fighting or by ritual suicide. Only 216 were captured during the course of battle. The Marines suffered 6,821 killed and 19,217 wounded. Four cameramen were killed and ten were wounded while filming this documentary. Your purchases make this channel possible! US Navy Mekong Delta Operations 1967ZenosWarbirds2021-03-07 | New restored HD Upload! (Set the video setting at 1080P.)The labyrinthine Delta was a hot zone in the war against well organized Viet Cong insurgents, immortalized by the film "Apocalypse Now." This beautifully photographed film is the real thing -- a "slice of life" documentary showing daily operations aboard the Harnett County and on river patrols by air & water. The USS Harnett County (LST-821) served as a floating base in the China Sea for PBR and helicopter patrol operations in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. Highly recommended! Maximum Effort 8th AF WW2 Bombing Mission 1944ZenosWarbirds2021-02-06 | New HD Upload! (Set the video setting at 1080P.)Target for Today is the classic World War II feature length documentary showing a "maximum effort" daylight bombing mission deep into Germany. This is a new restored HD edition you won't see anywhere else. There are no actors in "Target For Today." This film was shot on location under combat conditions and features the officers and men of the 8th Air Force going about their deadly business. All aspects of an actual major raid in 1943, from early planning through final touch down and crew debriefings, are covered. Anklam. Danzig and the FW-190 plant at Marienburg are the targets hit. You'll see operations from the high command down through Divisions, Wings, Groups & into Squadrons as the missions unfold. Easy to understand graphics show how B-17 & B-24 squadrons were organized in the air for maximum defensive fire and how they were routed to deceive enemy defenses. Although inflating the strategic bombing campaign's effectiveness through 1943, this is not a sugar coated propaganda film. Heavy losses and the bomber crew's trepidation about making unescorted daylight deep penetration raids on heavily defended targets in Germany are dramatically portrayed, including fierce German fighter attacks. Over 1 and 1/2 hours of engrossing World War II footage. Unlike the civilian Seabees, Aviation Engineers were part of the Army Air Corps. Munda Airfield at Munda Point on the Island of New Georgia was one of the keys bases for projecting air power over the Solomon Islands and was used to great effect by the Japanese. After fierce fighting from 22 July – 4 August 1943 it was captured by U.S Army units from the 37th, 43rd and 25th infantry divisions. The airfield was damaged and there was a pressing need to increase its capabilities to handle many more aircraft of all types. Seabees, including the 73rd Naval Construction Battalion, moved in after the fighting stopped and began operations, joined soon after by the 828th Aviation Engineers. The 828th EAB specialized in aviation specific tasks like building runways. By October 5th, planes were able to use the entire 6,000ft runway, lengthened from the original 4,000ft, and the base was rapidly expanded with additional taxi ways, aprons and hangers. Munda soon became the busiest airfield in the South Pacific. During October daily departures and arrivals averaged 400 planes, with a one day peak of 564 aircraft! The 828th EAB continued to serve with distinction in the Pacific Theater, including the Philippines campaign.
