Bass Aulos and Flute at Aigai Vergina the Palace of Philip II Aulos Collective 2023-12-24 | My friend Stefanos invited me to play at this magnificent site and have a musical meeting of these two ancient instruments.This bass aulos is a lower version of the ancient Louvre Aulos.Double pipes were played for several thousand years in various forms.The city of Aigai, the ancient first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia, was discovered in the 19th century near Vergina, in northern Greece. The most important remains are the monumental palace, lavishly decorated with mosaics and painted stuccoes, and the burial ground with more than 300 tumuli, some of which date from the 11th century B.C. Ancient Greek Aulos & Lyre Duet - Anacreons Spree Aulos Collective 2025-08-15 | Inspired by the ancient poet Anacreon, known for his poems of love, wine and revelry. ''Anacreon's Spree'' is written in the ancient enharmonic dorian, and lower mixolydian modes. We wrote this piece to see how classical auloi respond with lyre, and to begin to explore how quartertones can be used within the enharmonic mode. The Challenges of Harvesting and Making Aulos Reeds Aulos Collective 2025-03-07 | Some might inquire why I can be a bit protective with my reeds, some might wonder why I limit them exclusively to customers of my instruments.I hope this may go some way to explaining it. When the aulos reed arrives in my customer hands, it has already been on quite a journey: What does it mean to make an aulos reed? Depending on which season it was harvested in, the reed has already been seasoned for 3 years according to Theophrastus’ recommendations. The reed has survived a complex process, enduring whilst many others have been broken or discarded along the journey. It went through a process of many hours of playing in, scraping and balancing and only if it balances and matches its partner reed, which is cut from the same stem of cane, and again only if this partner survived all the same process, will it be played by my customer.It took me and my friends Callum Armstrong and Caleb Simone the last 7 years to understand the words Theophrastus left us on how to make aulos reeds, to find the right processes. To research the dimensions needed to fit each instrument. To learn what to harvest and what the source material needs. Aulos and Shakuhachi at the ancient oracle of Dodona Greece Aulos Collective 2024-02-03 | Dodona in Epirus, north-west Greece, lies in a valley on the eastern slopes of Mt. Tomaros and was famed throughout the ancient Greek world as the site of a great oracle of Zeus. The site was expanded in the Hellenistic period, and one of the largest theatres in Greece was built which, recently restored, stands as testimony to Dodona's importance throughout antiquity.The oracle at Dodona was considered the oldest in Greece, even if it was later replaced in importance by the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. According to Herodotus (Histories 2.57) the oracle was founded when two black doves flew from Thebes in Egypt; one dove settled in Libya to found the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon, and the other settled in an oak tree at Dodona, proclaiming a sanctuary to Zeus be built there.The origin of the name Dodona is uncertain but may derive either from the Oceanid nymph of the same name or the river Dodoni. First settled in the early Bronze Age, Dodona benefitted from a "hundred springs", and there is some evidence of an early chthonian cult to a fertility/Mother earth goddess, which is consistent with Hesiod's description of a Great Goddess who fed her worshippers roasted acorns and a scene on a Mycenaean gold ring excavated at the site. Bass Aulos in the Roman necropolis Alyscamps Arles Aulos Collective 2024-01-26 | Immortalized in Dante’s Inferno, Alyscamps, one of the most famous historical burial grounds outside of Rome, is a short walk from the centre of Arles in the southwestern corner of Provence.What an inspiring place to play the ancient aulos, that might very well have been played right here for burials in those ancient times.The bass version of the aulos is a fourth lower than the original. Ancient iconography shows us that large auloi had existed. Louvre Aulos in the Roman Necropolis Alyscamps in Arles Aulos Collective 2024-01-01 | Immortalized in Dante’s Inferno, Alyscamps, is one of the most famous historical burial grounds outside of Rome, and is a short walk from the centre of Arles in the southwestern corner of Provence.What an inspiring place to play the ancient aulos, an instrument that might very well have been played right here for burials in those ancient times.The replica of the Louvre aulos played here in this video, is from the greco roman period. Animated Ancient Greek Vase with Aulos (Double Pipe) Solo Aulos Collective 2023-12-26 | A collaboration between the Aulos Collective and the Universität Würzburg.The music is played on the Louvre Aulos, and is an original composition by Callum Armstrong called ´Satyrs´. The piece uses chromatic shifts similar to the ones found in the ´Athenaios Paean´ and also demonstrates the possibilities of the aulos to overblow.The animation by André Mischke, is based on the C6th B.C. pot of the Seilenoi (Eldery Satyrs) making wine. Ancient Greek Double Pipes - The Frogs composed and played on the Louvre Aulos by Callum Armstrong Aulos Collective 2022-11-12 | A semi improvised piece inspired by a translation made by Dr Armand D'Angour of the "Frog Chorus" from Aristophanes´ play "The Frogs". Aulos meets Shakuhachi II in St Flour du Pompidou - Ancient Greek Double Pipes and Japanese Flute Aulos Collective 2022-11-02 | A reconstruction of the Louvre aulos found in Egypt dating from the Hellenistic period, played by Max Brumberg and a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, the shakuhachi, played by Thomas Goulpeau.Two instrument makers, that have known each other many years, explore the rich sounds of their instruments.This is a contemporary exploration of the sounds and possibilities of the Louvre aulos. The journey to learn to play and to make reeds and the aulos began in 2017 when I met Callum Armstrong and he introduced me to the Auloi, I felt deeply touched by the sound.The Aulos are from the Greek antique and were used in rituals, theatre, therapy and amusement. The two pipes are tuned in a fourth to each other. The instrument itself is a reproduction of an instrument found in Egypt, exactly the same hole setting it must have sounded similar when people played it back then. Stefan Hagel measured the instrument in the Louvre Museum and made it possible to do an exact reconstruction. Though the players were far more experienced playing in a tradition of an instrument being already played for about 2000ys in those days. Nowadays we are rediscovering this ancient instrument and its sounds and for me it is an amazing thing to be part of the people rediscovering the Aulos.The breathing technique used is called circular breathing. Callum Armstrong - plays Bellerman Exercise §101 on the Ancient Greek Double Pipes Aulos / Tibia Aulos Collective 2022-10-27 | The Bellerman Exercises are a series of ancient, musical extracts passed down to us through byzantine sources. It has been suggested that these musical fragments are exercises for beginner auletes. (Stefan Hagel, ‘Musics’, Bellermann’s Anonymi, and the Art of the Aulos, Greek and Roman Studies, 2018) In this video I take `Exercise´ §101, (0.06 -0.12 in the video) and use it to explore some polyphonic ideas in my arrangment of it on the aulos.
