All the hit songwriters I’ve met during my career have gone to great lengths to learn the craft of songwriting. And they keep working at their craft to stay current and relevant as styles and the public’s preferences change with the times.
There’s something else that hit songwriters have in common, but few will ever admit it. They ALL made a ton of mistakes in the beginning!
That’s why I’ve asked Robin to join us on this week’s episode of TAXI TV!

More specifically, MUSIC business skills!
Which musician would you sign?
Given the choice of working with an artist, composer, songwriter, or producer who has a decent, working knowledge of how the “sausage is made” VS the musician who thinks great music is all they need, the industry executives I’ve worked with for nearly 50 years always seem to sign deals with musicians who have their business s#!t together. Why is that?
Because the musicians who understand the business side of the music business are easier to work with, and almost always make more money for all parties involved. Who would you work with?

How much success have you had with your music that can be directly attributable to your social media? Yep, that’s what I thought — practically none.
However, when I Google a musician, and the first thing I see at the top of the page is something like XYZMusician.com, I click and usually learn everything I need to know: What their story is, what their music sounds like, when and where their gigs are, what their videos look like if they have an EPK if they sell merch, do they have a Patreon, what their career path looks like, and how to contact him or her. Oh yeah, and links to all of their social media.

Most aren’t aware of some very common mistakes they’re making that could easily kill a sync career before it ever has a chance to take off!
I’m going to boil it down to a clearly defined list of critical things every musician should know if they want to start a career in music licensing or see faster growth if they’re already on the path.
⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️
0:14 - TAXI CEO Michael Laskow welcomes the audience and explains the topic he will be discussing.
2:30 - Michael explains the difference between the music industry you already know about and the music licensing or sync side of the industry.
3:24 - People ask: "But if my music is incredibly good, wouldn't they want to use it?" Michael explains that this is not the case.
4:21 - How does the sync industry get your music out there, versus the record industry?
10:04 - I signed a piece of music with a library months ago, and it still hasn't been used, How long do I have to wait?
12:13 - How do I get my music to a music supervisor?
12:44 - A music supervisor does not pick the music, there is a huge misconception that they are looking for hits like the A&R people in the record industry. Music supervisors are looking for music to fit a scene, or convey emotion for a scene.
13:32 - A music supervisor is like a casting director. The TV show's executive producer describes what he or she needs, and the music supervisor sends out a brief or combs through the music they already have and finds possibilities to share with the Director or Executive Producer.
17:54 - In most cases, music supervisors prefer to source the music they present to their bosses from music libraries. Why?
18:51 - What does having music that will "Clear" mean?
22:56 - How much do I get paid when I sell a song?
29:01 - What is the range of fees and income I can make for TV shows, feature films, and TV commercials?
31:45 - Why would I want to give up my publishing? I took a music business class, and the professor told me to hold onto my publishing.
35:16 - I've been told that it's better to create music in response to a TAXI listing or brief, rather than pitching music that is already done. Is that true?
39:35 - What is an exclusive versus a non-exclusive deal?
43:33 - What is a PRO?
48:11 - When should I sign with a PRO?
50:08 - Which is better: ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC?
53:07 - Do I need to copyright my music?
56:50 - Should I copyright every one of my instrumental pieces?
58:00 - Should I copyright all of my songs?
1:01:47 - What is Master Quality versus Demo Quality versus Broadcast Quality?
1:07:36 - Do I need to master my music for TV and film?
1:13:51 - What is the difference between instrumentals versus instrumental cues?
1:20:01 - What is the difference between a Faded ending versus a buttoned or stinger ending?
1:21:54 - What is a developmental arc?
1:22:43 - Am I better off creating instrumental music or songs if I want to become successful with sync?
1:25:16 - How much money can I make with music licensing?
1:28:32 - How many tracks or songs do I need to make a living with music licensing?
1:29:19 - How long does it take to get paid?
1:30:23 - What are the most common genres of music needed for placements?

7:31 - People do not finish what they start- it's hard! Michael talks about two books he will be referring to throughout the episode (You may find them below).
8:05 - Be sure to have a title or an idea you are excited about and then work up a song sketch, Robin explains how that works and provides examples.
14:02 - You have to start before you can even think about finishing.
16:25 - If you say "I'm working on a great song," the song can't be judged as NOT great. Don't look at being judged as a deterrent.
18:51 - Robin mentions a book called Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland.
19:46 - Michael quotes Seth Godin: "True learning is a voluntary experience that requires tension and discomfort (the persistent feeling of incompetence as we get better at a skill)."
21:10 - To write one song, use one core idea.
25:28 - Keep lyrics vivid and simple. If you're thinking, you're not feeling, and emotion is the power of songwriting.
28:03 - Robin explains the "Fresh Ears" test.
32:31 - Set a deadline! TAXI listings already have a deadline, so use that to inspire you to finish.
34:23 - If your song is unfinished, apply one songwriting skill to a song you do not like.
35:19 - Take the emotion you want to express and compare it to something else.
39:50 - Michael talks about Master Writer.

43:34 - Create new habits that work for you, don't keep repeating the same ones repeatedly.
44:54 - When writing songs, you are looking for emotion, don't get stuck looking for rhymes or comparisons. Robin shares examples of some lists.
53:36 - If you work with another person, you will be compelled to finish by the listing deadline to avoid the risk of embarrassing yourself in front of your collaborator.
56:02 - In all genres, top charting songs are all collaborations, come into a new collaboration prepared, and be respectful.
1:01:34 - Songs now have to be demoed, you can't pitch a song without a demo with an authentic vocal. Write about your strengths.
1:08:13 - Know your genre when you start writing.

5:31 - For listings seeking new songs for an artist, if a submission is a fit and fully representative of what the artist could make on their own but it's not Broadcast Quality, will it be declined?
8:10 - Michael defines Broadcast Quality. Even a Demo needs a good vocal delivery, it needs to sell the song and the artist to hear why it could be a hit.
9:43 - Are screeners required to listen to the entire song before providing a critique?
13:53 - What genres does Craig screen personally?
18:55 - A lot of effort goes into writing the TAXI listings. They are meticulously written and the details are included to help the members submit correctly.
20:57 - Michael explains the listing process and how they are written.
25:20 - Are TAXI screeners allowed to submit to TAXI listings and if so, how is favoritism addressed?
26:38 - Why are some listings only looking for songs that are recorded between certain eras?
28:29 - Michael talks about an A+ Vintage listing company and why they need authentic music from the era.
35:51 - What is the best thing for someone in a home studio to invest in?
45:22 - When a critique says the virtual instruments are dated sounding, what programs or software don't sound that way? Are there processing elements that need to be done to make them sound more current?
52:28 - Can you walk us through some of the preparatory registration work that should take place before or after a submission?
54:41 - Make sure you understand the deal points in the listing before you submit.
57:31 - What is the most common complaint Craig sees as the Head Screener?
1:03:03 - CHAT ROOM QUESTIONS
1:03:30 - After we get the return feedback, can we make corrections and make sure it goes back to the same screener?
1:04:59 - If a client wants a Jazz cue recorded in the 1950s with a sax solo, and we have a Jazz recording from the 1950s that does not have a sax solo, can we record the sax over it and mix it?
1:08:12 - What percentage of submissions are forwarded? What percentage of submissions turn out to be the greatest revenue for the submitters?
1:15:29 - Which style of listings does TAXI get the most or the least submissions for?
1:24:13 - If you're with more than one library that's great! Different libraries specialize in different things. There is no harm in expanding your client roster.
1:28:26 - I post questions on the Forum quite a bit, but get very little response. Where are all of these great TAXI members who are supposed to be so helpful?
1:31:56 - Do all submissions have to be mastered, and can a track be mastered later?
1:34:02 - How do I prepare for a placement? How does the client get files from me?

While other manufacturers have seemingly tried to improve the listening/hearing experience by building a better “mousetrap,” Flare Audio studied the “mouse” first. Well, actually, the human ear, and how it degrades sound.
Flare’s E-Prototype earphones dramatically reduce the natural distortion the ear canal introduces, and the result is noticeable. The imaging is impressive, the EQ curve sounds balanced and true, ear fatigue is greatly diminished (if not non-existent), and I’m hearing things/parts/instruments I’ve never heard before—even in my beloved Steely Dan songs I’ve used as my control room references for decades.
Want to Win a Pair of Flare’s E-Prototypes? 🤩
⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️
0:56 - TAXI CEO Michael Laskow welcomes the chat room and introduces Davies and Naomi, owners and creators of Flare Audio. Michael explains why he is so enthusiastic and impressed with the E Prototype Earphones.

19:06 - Were loudspeakers their first product?
26:55 - Flare Audio has patents worldwide.
27:55 - When Davies focused on the ear and how each ear is different, that is when everything changed.
31:11 - Davies created the Calmer technology. It eliminates distortion. It fits inside the ear and changes the geometry of the ear to create a much cleaner sound.
36:47 - Noise is not the problem, the ear causes the problem and alerts us to stress.
39:42 - What does this have to do with the Fletcher Musson Curve?
41:02 - Flare Audio has sold over 2 million sets of Calmer to 186 countries globally. Calmer removes the edges of the irritating sounds and makes them less harsh.
49:28 - Davies explains the earphones and the technology behind them as well as the shape of the earphones.
51:51 - Is there any risk of eardrum damage?
55:46 - Davies explains why earbuds are so bass-heavy and if can they cause potential damage.
1:01:06 - Micahel plays the Flare Audio video.
1:08:58 - Michael shares his experience with the E Prototype earphones.
1:19:54 - Will Flare Audio license their technology?
1:27:19 - If things sound so much clearer with the earphones, how will that translate into mixes, or will they negatively affect the mixes?
1:44:50 - Davies explains the Jet earphones.
1:49:06 - Which set of earphones is best for the studio?
1:49:13 - Will be a Bluetooth version?
1:52:15 - Are the Jet earphones for regular listening?
1:52:34 - What is the name of the earphones that will be coming out later this year?
1:53:52 - Are there plans to tackle in-ear monitors as well?
1:54:59 - Every physical structure has a resonant frequency. How do you bypass the resonant structure of the earbuds?

We imagine this will be sort of like the Quarantini Happy Hours we enjoyed so much during the pandemic, except we won’t be locked down this time ;-)
Will we hang out and have some fun? Yep!
Will I answer questions, if asked? Sure, why not?
Will we pick some of the songs at random to listen to? Yes, we will!
Will we do some random drawings for prizes? Absolutely!

⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️
0:31 - TAXI CEO Michael Laskow welcomes everyone and outlines the episode.
1:34 - Mistake #1: To think that the music licensing business is the same as the record business.
3:11 - Mistake #2: To think that the Film/TV Music Supervisors are like record company A&Rs.
5:22 - Music supervisors are looking for music to set a mood or enhance a scene.
5:44 - Mistake #3: To think that music licensing companies and libraries "shop" your music - They don't!
9:35 - Mistake #4 - To think your old songs or instrumentals are so good, even though they do not fit the brief/listing. Older music isn't likely to fit what the client is asking for.
12:16 - Creating music for the brief will increase your chances of getting a forward, signed, or licensed.
15:51 - Mistake #5 - To not listen to your sync songs and tracks through the lens of "usability." Will it solve the music supervisor's situation by enriching the emotion/mood of a scene?
20:06 - Mistake #6 - To think you'll start making income immediately in the sync business. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
21:31 - Michael explains what a sync fee is, how you would typically get paid, and that it does take longer if it's with an international company/library.
25:41 - Mistake #7 - To think that it's wise to sign a lot of - or MOST of your songs/tracks with one company because they "love" you.
28:14 - Mistake #8 - To present yourself to an industry professional as a jack of all trades who can create music in any genre. This is a dead giveaway that you are not very experienced. Be honest about what your strengths are.
31:39 - Mistake #9 - To think that investing your $$$ into building an elaborate home studio will result in more of your music being signed/licensed. It's not the gear, it's the ear!
37:44 - Mistake #10 - To ignore genres that are considered niche.
43:06 - Mistake #11 - To ignore music libraries that are outside of the U.S. market.
46:57 - Mistake #12 - To miss a deadline. Be professional and submit on time! Dependability goes hand in hand with desirability.
49:51 - Mistake #13 - To not deliver what the brief asks for.
51:56 - Mistake #14 - To not deliver your music to libraries in the way they request it. Pay close attention to the details as to how companies want to receive your music.
54:16 - Mistake #15 - To make a public display (on social media) of negativity, discontent, or nastiness, even if it's not directed at a particular company.
1:00:10 - Mistake #16 - To not try to include an organic instrument played by a human on a track that is entirely MIDI. Michael provides some examples and explains how adding texture and humanity can take your music to the next level.
1:04:31 - Mistake #17 - To try to submit submissions that have samples/loops.
1:16:00 - CHAT ROOM Q&A: Should you always submit radio edit songs first or submit both versions?
1:17:16 - What was Michael's best moment at the 2023 TAXI Road Rally?
1:21:35 - Would Michael ever consider taking the TAXI Road Rally on the road?
1:23:02 - Should all library submissions have a one-second lead-in?
1:23:55 - If I sign a collaboration agreement with a friend and we both contribute to the track, is that frowned upon when making submissions?
1:24:52 - Are there way too many vocal elements to be considered instrumental cues? Are there listings for that style?

The manager you’re probably dreaming of—you know… you make the music, and they do all the business-y and promotional work to help you become famous… that kind of manager—probably won’t want to work with you yet, and here’s why…
The big, high-powered managers work on commission, and they won’t MAKE a commission unless you’re already making money. A well-meaning super fan might offer to manage you in the beginning, and that’s great… at least for a while.
But can their lack of industry knowledge, connections, and clout be replaced by their raw enthusiasm? Maybe, but typically, not! And if they’re successful enough to help make you famous and/or get offers from major labels, in most cases, the label you sign with is going to “suggest” that you sign with a seasoned pro instead of your super fan. And that’s when things get ugly.

Why am I not surprised that Spotify plans to pay even less to "lesser" artists soon? Talks between the streaming giant and the three major labels have been ongoing for some time, and rumors have been making the rounds for months. Now, it appears that Spotify will be lowering the rate paid to indie artists. Most likely, that means you!
Disc Makers CEO, Tony van Veen does a sponsored presentation on this very topic during this Road Rally Sequel.

⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️
0:15 - TAXI Music's CEO, Michael Laskow, welcomes Disc Makers CEO, Tony van Veen.
6:00 - We all deal with some people because we have to and other times we deal with nice people. It isn't hard to be nice, polite, and on time.
8:32 - What are the details of the Spotify deal for artists?
11:59 - The major labels have been pushing "artist-centric" pricing on Spotify.
12:33 - A Spotify policy change is that any song that does not generate 1,000 streams a year will not get royalties, those royalties will be redistributed to other artists, and the major labels will get the most.
13:18 - Distributors who distribute content that might be considered fraudulent may be charged a penalty, but no one knows what that penalty might be.
14:18 - For "white noise" recordings people use to fall asleep like rain, waves, etc. - the streaming royalties will change for those as well.
16:08 - The average song today is about .45 seconds shorter due to streaming. Singles are usually 3-4 minutes long, but if they are shorter and the artist can have more songs - that means more streams.
17:43 - If your DIY/Indie song has 1,000 streams or less for $4, they think the artist won't miss that money, the point is these are not just legit recordings, it is earned revenue for the artist and who the royalties belong to, and now they are going to be absorbed by the major artists.
19:07 - Spotify estimates year 1 will be 40 million in DIY artists' royalties paid to major artists and over a billion over 5 years.
22:34 - Major labels do not do much artist development anymore.
26:15 - What can artists do about these Spotify changes?
34:32 - Spotify has approximately 100,000,000 songs on the platform. Last year's statistics show that 37,000,000 songs would have hit the monetization threshold, and 63,000,000 songs would not meet that threshold.
38:50 - Sync music opportunities can be like a lottery ticket, Michael explains.
41:56 - The streaming economy has totally killed the opportunities for middle-class musicians.
46:33 - Streaming doesn't pay, but if you upload to DistroKid, you instantly have tons of listeners.
50:10 - Bands are still DIY to this day, you have to self-promote, and artists need to generate their own demand.
51:15 - Use Spotify like a promo channel, you have to have your music where the listeners and buyers are.
55:00 - Starting out as a musician, it's like starting your own small business.
58:57 - TAXI helps writers improve their music.
59:35 - TAXI's community is very valuable, the community began organically, and it's the people who make it that way.
1:04:52 - You must engage with fans and respond to comments on socials!
1:07:24 - Fans will buy your CD or vinyl especially if you sign them. Fans want to support the artist, it doesn't matter if they listen to the CD, it's a signed product.
1:13:53 - You have to market your music and know how to relate to your fans, potential fans, and your audience. People want to know you and who you are.
1:15:19 - The single biggest thing that can hold an artist back is to not have a growth mindset, you have to grow and not do the same thing over and over.
1:21:10 - Local is key, patience is key.
1:26:19 - Physical sales count much more heavily than digital streams.

⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️
0:08 - TAXI CEO Michael Laskow introduces Robin Frederick. He mentions how packed her session in the Ballroom was for the 2023 TAXI Road Rally, as well as how busy her booth was. Robin mentions that she heard some great music and ideas, and she is impressed by how much people's songwriting is improving.
3:16 - 1st Songwriting Mistake: People seem to have the most trouble with Universal lyrics, thinking they are generic, safe, and familiar. The most universal thing everyone feels is emotion, everyone can relate to emotion.
6:13 - Film and TV songs focus on how you feel, not the facts of what happened.
7:42 - Songs should convey the emotion of the fact, not the fact itself.
8:08 - Robin Explains how to write about pure emotion with a little bit of context by using comparisons.
12:35 - The problem with using cliches is that they lose the emotional impact.
13:10 - It's not all about the detail, it's about the root feeling.
13:15 - How does she feel about invoking the senses?
14:45 - Robin shares an example of how to use the senses in the lyrics.
18:34 - You should study songs and lyrics that you like as well as creative writing. It's all about imagery, It needs to be applied to lyrics today. People do engage with vivid and compelling lyrics.
23:45 - Mistake #2 - Thinking that hit song structure is the same as Fim & TV song structure.
Robin provides examples.
32:11 - Something you can do with dynamics is "trailer-ize" your songs. It's a growing area of songwriting.
35:23 - In the context of a TV commercial, the song structure is completely different from the song structure for a hit song.
36:46 - Mistake #3 - You can't think your melody is just a nice melody. Melody is equally important, it has to work with the lyrics to convey emotion.
39:26 - Does Robin have a preference for notes within or out of the chord?
42:16 - As a producer, you need to be able to understand and talk with the songwriter or singer if something isn't working.
45:02 - Mistake #4 - Your whole song needs to create a mood or atmosphere and there 7 things that go into creating the emotion that you want. Robin explains.
48:10 - Mistake #5 - You have to be authentic - the mistake is writing what you think the market wants without authentically feeling it yourself. You can't write a song you don't like!
50:38 - Habits are what is embedded in you as a young person, there is nothing wrong with habits, they can help you write faster, but if you only have a few habits, you won't grow and will write the same thing over and over. You want to create more habits and give yourself more choices.
54:51 - What is the logic behind flipping the first and second verses?
57:27 - Intos have gotten shorter over time, what do people need to know about writing intros for TV and Film?

0:01- TAXI CEO Michael Laskow welcomes Bob Mair and the chat room.
0:50 - How is the strike affecting the music library industry?
5:23 - What is his take on AI and is he afraid or worried about it?
14:58 - Are there any particular genres that are hot for his library now?
20:18 - What is the standard licensing deal when signing with a music library?
24:31 - Bob explains how the process works once music is sent to him that he feels is very useable.
32:25 - As a courtesy, you should respond if a library reaches out, even if you are not interested, don't ghost them.
34:08 - If you sign a deal with a publisher that works in TV and Film, that does not prevent you from being an artist as well.
37:08 - It is important to know what you're doing and be professional.
38:07 - People are still stuck in the Record Industry frame of mind. They may have a great song, but sometimes it doesn't work for TV and Film. Bob explains why he has to pass on some really good music occasionally.
44:37 - There has been a huge uptick in Country music requests lately, but it can be hard for Country writers to not write a song with a specific story. Writing universal lyrics is key for sync.
45:33 - What makes a piece of music placeable over and over?
56:51 - Michael talks about a composer and how he uses stems in the shows that he produces. The joy of stems is that you take one cue and create numerous versions of it.
59:09 - Bob explains why he has been resistant to stems.
1:00:01 - Stems would be great with AI.
1:03:45 - I've heard that licensing companies are nervous about songs with writers or musicians from multiple countries. Under what circumstances would that be the case?
1:06:36 - Is there a threshold for the number of writers on a song?
1:07:22 - Is the AfroBeat genre getting hotter?
1:08:32 - People get hung up on levels and lufs. Does Bob have any advice on the overall topic of levels?
1:10:50 - Do Artists have a better chance of getting picked up if they master everything they create?
1:14:41 - Does Bob see many requests for Vintage Pop from the 60's or the 80's?
1:15:57 - If someone does a really good job of creating something that sounds Vintage, is that okay, or does it truly need to be Vintage?
1:19:02 - It only takes one "oops" to get blacklisted over one piece of vintage music that someone does not own or inherited proof of ownership?
1:22:15 - Should I be mixing with stems in mind, applying a fair amount of master compression
instead of just adding the stems together, or just forgetting stems for that stage?
1:23:06 - Does Bob still record his own music?

He was at the Rally with his mom and creative partner — Sherry Marcus Milano — who’s also a force of nature!
It’s not an exaggeration to say that music libraries and other music licensing professionals are now figuratively banging their doors down, asking for music from Marcus, Sherry, and his brother Ethan as well. They’ve got more requests than they can handle.
Isn’t that the dream for most musicians?
How Marcus and His Family Have Done It
That’s the thrust of exactly what I want to find out! If they’ve been able to do it, couldn’t you?
This is an episode you really don’t want to miss! Ask any self-help success guru (like Tony Robbins) and they’ll tell you to follow the steps of the people who already have the kind of success you want to have.

Is Casey so bad that he can’t create great music on his own? No! He just knows what he’s good at, and what he’s not so good at. Toplining is his strong suit, engineering and production, not so much ;-)
I really can’t think of any TAXI member who so wonderfully exemplifies why collaboration is such a powerful tool. And there are so many of you reading this email who know you should be collaborating, but you don’t!
“Why not?” is the question!
You don’t know who to collaborate with, or how to find somebody who’s a good fit? You’re afraid a collaborator might steal your ideas? You don’t want to split the income? You don’t know how the process works?
Well, we’re going to help you figure all that out, and much more in this week’s episode of TAXI TV. Casey is a font of incredibly valuable information when it comes to collaborating, and I’m going to pry every ounce of that info out of him, and hand it to you on a silver platter!
If you’ve ever had the urge to collaborate, but don’t know how to get started or how the process works, you really shouldn’t miss this week’s episode of TAXI TV!
