Dual notch tinnitus masking noise at 4 kHz and 8 kHz; engineered from the ambient hiss of a 1970-spec Neve transformer-balanced microphone preamplifier.
Most noise masking on the channel is built from digital signal generators. For this one I reached for analog hardware. The Neve has an extraordinarily low noise floor, so the signal path was pushed hard to bring up that hiss. What comes out the other end is not digital noise — it is the actual electronic character of one of the most recorded pieces of audio equipment in history. The same iron transformer that captured decades of legendary records is the source of this masking noise.
Two precise notches are then cut into that analog noise — at 4 kHz and 8 kHz — using surgical narrow-band filtering. The notches create voids at exactly those frequencies. The concept is that the mind, hearing a consistent noise with a void at its tinnitus frequency, may gradually shift attention away from the internal ringing toward the external noise — a process central to tinnitus habituation.
The Neve's transformer character also preserves a natural low-end resonance around 169 Hz that purely high-frequency masking sounds don't have. This gives the noise a grounded quality that is more comfortable for long listening sessions than harsh digital alternatives.

How to listen:
