Did you know that over 500 MILLION plastic straws are used each day in the United States? 😲 While straws were originally made of hollowed plants and sticks, and later metals, today plastic straws are extremely commonplace. 🥤 But plastic straws and other plastic items that are used just once before being tossed, last in the environment forever. Plastics injure and kill wildlife, and pollute our water, air, soil, and our bodies.
✅ Here’s 4 ways you can take action in your community to address single-use plastics like straws and more.
Level 1️⃣ Whenever ordering a drink, politely request “no straw, please.”
Level 2️⃣ Reach out to some local restaurants in your neighborhood or town and ask them to only serve straws upon request. Download @noplasticstraws informational cards to leave with your bill at www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org.
Level 3️⃣ Encourage restaurants to change to non-plastic & non-toxic straw options – like paper, glass, or stainless steel – if diners do request a straw. @plasticpollutes has a business-specific pledge for them to sign, too! Print cards for eateries to explain the straws upon request protocol.
Level 4️⃣ Host a screening of STRAWS the film in your community to start a wave of change.
