We Need To Extend Ebus Services to Penticton! My Petition Video John Cowans Railfan Channel 2026-03-30 | John says, Please sign and share my Online Petition here: change.org/penticton-ebus-service To: The residents of Penticton, Keremeos and Princeton, BCPlease sign this petition to get the necessary support required to get Ebus, a bus company that operates service twice daily in each direction between Kelowna and Vancouver, to expand that service to include Penticton, Keremeos and Princeton. Penticton has not had long distance bus service since May 13th, 2021, with the demise of Greyhound in Canada. For many residents of Penticton, if one does not own a vehicle, the only other option is to fly, and this is not an affordable option for many people who reside in this region.I have been working tirelessly for the past several months to try and get Ebus to permanently reroute one of their twice daily buses in each direction via Penticton and the Hope / Princeton Highway, I need your help to sway their decision.This proposal would get one Vancouver bound morning run redirected through Penticton, leaving the two afternoon runs intact so that Merritt still maintains existing bus service. To be specific, I am proposing that the 9 AM departure from the West Kelowna stop reroute via Penticton, Keremeos and Princeton utilizing the Penticton Airport as the "Penticton stop." Unlike the Ebus stop in West Kelowna, which is merely a sign on the sidewalk along Highway 97, the Penticton Airport has a parking lot, indoor waiting room with chairs and washroom facilities. Transport Canada, owners of this airport, would have to grant Ebus permission to use the airport, but I do not see this as being a huge problem. Ebus currently utilizes both the Abbotsford and Kelowna Airports as stops for their services.The suggested stop at the Penticton Airport would occur at approximately 10:15 AM to board passengers bound for the Lower Mainland with an arrival for approximately 3:45 PM at the VIA Rail train station at Main Street and Terminal Avenue in downtown Vancouver.The morning eastbound counterpart run currently departs from the terminal in Vancouver at approximately 6:30 AM and arrives at the West Kelowna location about 11:45 AM going by way of Merritt. IF rerouted via the Hope/Princeton Highway the trip would arrive at the Penticton Airport at approximately 11:45 AM.These proposed times are estimates, however Ebus has had to detour these buses a multitude of times via the Hope/Princeton Highway when the Coquihalla Highway has been out of commission, and the run times are based on those situations. Ebus has indicated to me that one of their reasons for not wanting to reroute is due to the fact that the running time between Vancouver and Kelowna extends by approximately one hour and 15 minutes when detouring on Highways 3 and 97. This is true, however Greyhound ran 4 buses per day for many years and 2 buses per day after the Coquihala Connector was completed. Our residents deserve at least the one bus in each direction that I am proposing.I have seen local Facebook groups with strangers looking for rides to Vancouver. This is something that is clearly not a safe option and this change could avoid these situations.Folks, I cannot make this happen without your help and moral backing to make this a reality. Please take a few minutes to read and sign this petition which I am prepared to take to local and provincial representatives. This line as built in 1914 by the Great Northern Railway to link the main line at Wenatchee to a line the Great Northern had built under the Vancouver , Victoria and Eastern Railway. This line until 1973 crossed the border near Oroville and went to Keromeos, BC to haul fruit from that region until major flooding washed away a bridge on this route on teh Canadian side of the order so Burlington Northern applied to abandon the Canadian portion of this railway line. The BN sold the lien out of Oroville to the Rail America Corporation in September, 1996. Travels With John 2023 - Australia - The Savannahlander Redux, Queensland, Australia. John Cowans Railfan Channel 2024-11-11 | The Savannahlander is an Australian passenger train service that operates in Far North Queensland. It travels on the Tablelands railway line and the Etheridge railway line from the coastal city of Cairns to Forsayth and return. John says, "This is a very extended look at my journey on the Savannahlander. As much as all of my 64 days in Australia were a great experience , I do have to conclude that my four day experience ( October 11th to October 14th inclusive) on the train called the Savannahlander by far was the best railway experience I could ever have imagined for during my time there.. It was a two car no frills train where your air conditioning were open windows. But this was the ultimate true “Australian” experience which one could not even be imaginable visiting the big cities in Australia. This train goes weekly with Wednesday morning departures and Saturday evening arrivals at Cairns, Queensland and goes approximately 400 miles northwest of Cairns through the Kuranda range, deep into the Australian Outback, calling at very small and remote places such as Almaden, Forsayth and Mount Surprise, where the population in all cases were well less than 100 people. Alamaden where we stayed in the Railway Hotel was mainly just the hotel, the train station and a few houses. I truly felt I was in the movie Crocodile Dundee at these places. But I met some very nice, humble and genuine folks who resided in these far out of the way locations who would not trade their lifestyles in this vast remoteness for life in cities with amenities . This trip almost did not happen for me, because I initially omitted including this train into my very lengthy itinerary. It wasn’t until I saw the train arrive in Cairns during my 5 day stay there, my first port of call, on my trip that I realized what a huge mistake I had made. To correct my error, I was able to change my plans abruptly and make a quick get back to Cairns from Sydney and back to Sydney in order to ride this train a month into my trip.. I made the right decision as you will see by these videos and stills. My thanks to the two Engineers/Drivers Joesph Dietz and Hamish Withington who made this trip for me a truly remarkable and memorable experience. It was obvious to me that both of these guys enjoy their work and that their customer service level was truly outstanding.I am a huge railfan and former railway employee. We start with trackside runbys of VIA’s Malahat at various locations during the early 1980s. Then film I took while working as a trainman on the Vegetation Management work train ( referred to by the local employees as the "steam train”). This was a prototype of technology trying to combat getting rid of weeks with hot steam versus pesticides which was eventually deemed not viable. You will see the VIA Malahat passing the steam train when our train would take sidings allowing the passenger train to pass. You will see film I took from the cupola of the caboose on both CP’s Victoria and Port Alberni Subdivisions along Cameron Lake in 1991. You will see staged runbys for me by the crew I was working with at minutes 18 and 21 so I could get trackside videos of this train. Fast forward to the summer of 1988. After participating at Steam Expo in 1986 in Vancouver, and an extensive two year rebuild by the BC Rail steam crew, here we have the #6060 doubleheading with ex CP # 3716 as they both power the Royal Hudson steam train between North Vancouver and Squamish, BC on former BC Rail trackage. This run with the #6060 would have been deemed a break-in run as well as several others on the BC Rail prior to the #6060 returning back to her home province of Alberta in November 1988.I am a huge railfan and former railway employee. Travels With John 2024 - Gyermekvasút Childrens Railway John Cowans Railfan Channel 2024-10-10 | John says, "My visit to the Budapest Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút) - a 766 mm narrow gauge, seven mile long railway with two end stations, known as Széchenyi-hegy and Hűvösvölgy, that is located 235 meters lower than sea level. The line is single-tracked with passing points at stations and is not electrified. In 2015, the line was entered into the Guinness World Records as the longest railway line in the world where traffic and commercial services are operated by children.I want to convey a very personal sincere thank you and appreciation to one young man, Bendegúz Bárány who was truly instrumental in making my visit to the Children’s Railway a life long and memorable experience. He greeted and welcomed me to the railway upon my arrival. He was intrigued when I told him my being from Canada and a retired railway conductor. He was very helpful with my questions about their operation and made me feel so welcome there. One thing I will never forget is that I was incredibly thirsty when I arrived after a long walk from the cog railway in the heat. They don’t sell any beverages at their stations but he went into their office and returned with a cold soda drink and insisted I take it. That meant the world to me. Upon my return from riding the train, Bendegúz invited me up to their Interlocking Tower / Signal Box for a tour where he was assigned. It was nice to see after having worked at two similar towers in Montreal, Quebec in 1978. I met some of his peers and the parents of one of the other young men and I told these parents how proud they should be of how seriously these fine young people take their roles at this operation. Bendegúz’s mother Angéla was ecstatic when I asked if I could include my encounter with Bendegúz. It made her proud of her son that he was able to make that much of an impact on my visit and without any hesitation gave me her consent and blessing to include this very important human element of my visit to this very unique railway operation.
