yes, my face has a filter on it. yes, my vocals are tuned. yes, i re-filmed & overanalyzed this 1,000 times. but i’m so tired of being trapped in my body dysmorphia when freedom is literally waiting on the other side. if this is the baby step to get there, i’m taking it. (thank you, @Arenskymusic for asking me to film this, because it was the push i needed.💕)
video content has, of course, taken over social media, & being on camera has been my worst nightmare. it’s a small piece of what led me to somewhat disappear for the past (almost) year because “being seen” like this feels excruciatingly vulnerable.
seeing my own reflection also gives the body dysmorphia the perfect opportunity to dissect every perceived flaw. i hate being this honest about it, but i know there are some of you out there who go through the same, & i want you to know that i’m right there with you!!
i’ve missed you all so much, & the irony is that i know you don’t care what i look like, nor do you care if my vocals are perfectly tuned!! you’ve embraced me without ever regularly seeing me on video because this community is about something much deeper than that. we connect with each other & even create music together despite never meeting in person & living in different countries!!
i’ve loved getting to know you, hearing your stories, turning them into lyrics, & relating on so many levels that have nothing to do with our physical selves.💗

lovely listeners…this song is truly a piece of my heart. as some of you know, i am quite open about my mental health battles because it is so important to me to advocate for others who might be struggling. i spent far too long feeling alone in darkness, & i hope to prevent that feeling for others, even if its just from afar. i wrote all of me as a window into what the experience of battling an eating disorder can feel like for those unfamiliar & as a reminder to those who struggle that they are not alone. the lyrics are speaking directly to my anorexia, as we are taught early in the healing process to separate our identity from the eating disorder. my hope is to depict both the reality of the pain while also instilling an empowering & hopeful future to look toward, reminding us that there is always opportunity for us to face our internal battles & win. i began writing this song when i was 18-years-old, & it has seen so many variations & changes over the years. production began in 2019, but things never felt quite right. to this day, there are still aspects of the lyrics i would probably change, but overall, i am so proud to be able to finally share this song with all of you. i want to give an extra special thank you to th3 darp & cerberuh, who helped me to revisit the project & bring it back to life. they are two of the greatest guys ive been fortunate enough to work with, & im so grateful for their support & patience throughout the making of this production (my perfectionism kicks into high gear with songs im most emotionally attached to lol). & to you, the listener, thank you so much for your constant support & for being here on this journey with me! sending you lots of love. xo, r.

lovely listeners...a forewarning that this is brutally honest. this song was written about my battle with body dysmorphic disorder. for those of you who haven’t heard of bdd, it is a mental illness that creates an obsessive focus on perceived flaws in appearance. i wish i could truly depict in words what it feels like. it’s a far cry from vanity. it’s extremely painful & limiting. it’s wanting to share yourself with others but feeling imprisoned by the thoughts that you couldn’t possibly be lovable looking the way you do. it’s staring endlessly at minute details of your body that no one would ever notice but that you feel destroys your ability to be worthy. it’s painfully overthinking every single aspect of how you’ll present yourself to the world. it’s being horrified when looking in the mirror or seeing a photo of yourself & spiraling into the darkness of feeling trapped in your own skin with no way out. it’s keeping all of these feelings hidden because they’re often met with misunderstanding or judgment when expressed. i know how isolating it can feel to suffer with bdd. if even one person feels less alone after reading what i shared, or if one person gains a little more understanding about the realities of body dysmorphia, it was worth doing so. i wrote these lyrics to depict the pain, but also to depict the hope that resides within us when we stand up for ourselves…even when our inner-demons want to win. i hope you know that you’re lovable & worthy exactly as you are. sending you lots of unconditional love. xo, r.
