In this video I'm explaining why it may not be a good idea buying the Acasis TB504 Air, but instead, go straight for the Acasis TB504. Even if you are only using a Thunderbolt 4 40Gbps Apple Silicon Mac.
*Reason 1:*
Even when connected to an Apple Silicon Mac that's only Thunderbolt 4 40Gbps, the TB504 is faster.
I connected both enclosures to my base M4 Mac mini and used the same SSDs inside both enclosures and transferred data between the SSDs internally with both enclosures.
The TB504 Air was only operating at about 2.1GBps but the TB504 was doing the exact same test at just over 3GBps. And don't forget, this was on the exact same Thunderbolt 4 connection using a base M4 Mac mini.
Obviously when connected to a Thunderbolt 5 Apple Silicon Mac, in my case the M4 Max MacBook Pro. The TB504 is more than twice as fast doing the same tests. And is twice as fast in general, because the TB504 is running at 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5.
*Reason 2:*
By the time you have paid for your SSDs, the price difference of only $85 doesn't really become an appreciable saving with your overall storage cost, as the cost of the SSDs are very expensive. And don't forget to factor the price of your Mac into the equation.
So for your total cost of ownership on a setup that can cost multiple thousands of dollars. Is an $85 saving, that will restrict your speed even on Thunderbolt 4 and also massively restrict you if you upgrade to a Thunderbolt 5 capable Mac, really a saving?
*Other things to consider*
As verified by Acasis the TB504 series is not USB compatible. But to be super clear, this will not be an issue for anyone on Apple Silicon Mac. As all the enclosures in the TB504 series, or Acasis Flowcore series, are fully compatible with all Apple Silicon Macs, regardless of the if your Mac is using Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5.
Even if you already have all the SSDs for either of these enclosures and even if you are only on a Thunderbolt 4 40Gbps Apple Silicon Mac. You may still want to consider the points that I have mentioned as to why I would recommend the TB504.
I have not tested these enclosures on X86 Intel Macs, so don't know how compatible they are with the older Macs.
I have not tested these enclosures on any Windows computers. But if the Windows computer has Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5, then these enclosures "should" work with them.
Like me you may also have a MacBook Neo as a secondary machine and you may have thought that you could share your data from your TB504 or TB504 Air with you Neo. Well, as already mentioned, these enclosures are not USB compatible and they will not work with the MacBook Neo on its 10Gbps USB-C port. I have already tired this and can confirm that it does not work.
