I built a crude tailstock die holder years ago, but I sold it with my old hercus lathe. I decided it is about time that I replaced it with a newer, better version.
Yes, there are plenty of simpler methods to constrain the part without slotting, I just wanted an excuse to try out the slotter!
I'm still convincing myself that voice overs are a good format, part of me wonders if I just make silent videos with minimal talking. Let me know what you think ⬇

How did I crash it?!
I was threading a part, then had a lunch break... I came back, put the lathe in high gear for the next operation and didn't disengage the threading lever...
My tool slammed into the chuck and broke the stud.
I thought it was a good chance to play with an interesting eccentric part
I've not really done any eccentric turning so this was fun.

So I machine and fabricate adjustable feet, and also create a sheet metal drip tray.

I made this gantry to make machine moves easier. It features an adjustable height beam due to limited door height, and a whole lot more.
I thought with this video I'd touch on a few engineering concepts.
I forgot to mention, Being able to level the gantry to within 50 mm means that 2.4% of the weight acts sideways. ie a 1 ton load will need 24 kg sideways force to restrain it. A runaway load can be held back by hand or a rope etc. I felt this was a manageable amount
This gantry was actually finished late Feb, but I had a lot of extra work required first (concrete loading slab for example), and then other commitments.
The design is not perfect. I have improvements that I'd make in future. I might replace the bottle jacks with longer stroke jacks for faster raising

This is a George H Alexander mill, a Deckel FP1 clone, and is my first proper machine restoration.
I picked it up cheap, and the machine had been sitting untouched for over 5 years
Everything was stiff and hard to operate. I wanted to see if I could make it work again.
I was really unsure as to how for I was going to go, I wasn't planning on painted, but I did in the end.
There are areas that need revisiting (slotting head, x axis scoring, powerfeeds) but it all functions well for now.
In total this video took 23.5 hours of editing over 3 months. Typically in 1 hour blocks.

My mum is a ceramic sculptor and mentioned it to me and the project sounded like fun, so here we are.
The clay pugging process prepares the clay for the next several projects, but the pugging process takes time due to the small infeed chute and the pressure required to operate.
This attachment will feature a large motorised infeed chute, and a reversible mixing gear.
No dogs were harmed during the making of this video 😉

These allow a 45 degree bevel on either the top or bottom of a cantilevered plate.
This was a fun build and a chance to experiment with fits, tapers and interesting geometry.

It's a very different build I know, I'm not a woodworker by any means, but this turned out better than I expected.
Sure there are aesthetic things I would change, but it was a quickish build and I had limited supplies on hand.
The reason for the cage is because mum has a fair few dogs (see the end of the video), some are slow eaters and need separating when being they are being fed, they can go a bit crazy when there are visitors, and when the females are coming into season they need separating.

This was a fun video to make!

The next major upgrade for my band saw - a table for the vertical position
This is a continuation of my conversion of my horizontal metal band saw into a horizontal/vertical saw.
This table install presented a few design challenges due to limited clearance. In the horizontal position the table can't really overhang the blade, and generally this saw didn't offer a lot of space.
I made a quick release dovetailed system so that I can rapidly reposition the table. I loosely took inspiration from a camera tripod mount in this design
Unfortunately there were a few audio sync issues a 'dead spot' I was trying new editing workflows and it didn't work out too well. I think the video is still watchable despite these.

I think these are going to be a game changer for me. You can expect to see more of these in the future.
The hex heads are easy swapped out if I want another shape of workholding.

Alternatively they could be aluminium or brass to prevent marking a nice work piece. The options are endless

The mechanism was completely seized and needed attention
This isn't a repaint restoration, or a pristine perfect restoration. I just want to get this functional and use it.
The chuck has been sitting on the floor of my shed for 6 months due to it not working. It was still wet inside when I opened it up. I would say the bacteria / corrosion has been happening for 10+ years

In this video I convert a horizontal band saw into a switchable vertical / horizontal band saw.
I also make various improvements and fixes to the machine. I know the saw doesn't fully reach a vertical position but it is close enough to use, and I think it's within my comfort once I mount a table.
This WP210 band saw was sitting around unused for about 6 years at my work (it was too small apparently). It made sense to put it to use in my shed instead!
The next video will focus on making a nice quick change dovetail work table for the vertical position, and finalising other workholding aspects and tidying up my work
Also apologies on the inconsistent lighting throughout the project. As soon as the world settles down I'll get some thick curtains on my sliding door.
And also yes, the 'click to analyse' shouldn't be there!

Using the surface grinder is probably overkill for the accuracy of the router. At a guess the router is maybe accurate to 0.05 mm on a good day.

Steamfest is an annual even held in March in Sheffield Tasmania over 3 days.

I volunteer with Redwater Creek Steam and Heritage Society, and was helping out where I could. At some point I'll do more videos where we work on the engines (an endless task!)
Apologies on some of the footage jumping around. I tried to fix the worst of it in post
My concept was to primarily use manual machining methods to make the ship. The CNC router was employed to add a greebled recess in each wing, which then enabled the dark panels on the wings using a cold blue (selenium dioxide) solution.
I may do a follow up video on getting better better cold blue results.
I'm aware that CNC routers are not a great choice for milling steel, I kept my spindle speed low as practical (and thus feed as well) and used my smallest endmill to avoid excessive surface speed burning it up. It did struggle with cutting the steel, but who am I to argue with the result?
And yes, I know there are still face mill marks on the wing, I didn't make the recess deep enough couldn't sand much deeper. BUT if you listen to George Lucas discuss the Star Wars world, he intentionally made things 'dirty and used' to make it more realistic. So I'm justifying it as being 'in with the Star Wars look'!

This is a discussion on how the program works, starting with the concept, going through logic steps in a flow chart, before talking through the code.
I forgot to mention it, I found Serial commands slow the program down and can't be used while trying to drive the stepper (it becomes erratic)

The crane has been unused for almost 10 years and to make way for future port development the crane was required to be demolished.
A controlled collapse was chosen in favor of insitu demolition and was performed by installing temporary bracing cables, making strategic cuts in the structure, and then initiating the collapse via a pull line.
The operation was successful.
I don't normally post work stuff here, but this one is too good not to share
Including a covering lid and storage for surface platey tools and automatic light for illumination.
I used white paint so that dirt is easy to spot and clean.
If nothing else the LED light strip makes it look cool
It will need turning off when bluing parts however, this is fine by me

Depending on your hole sizing and number of teeth you can greatly simplify the cutting geometry with 1 cut per tooth. The alternative method (not shown here, everyone else tends to do this) requires 2 cuts per tooth with the second cut requiring a lateral offset.

In this video we assemble everything, (then reassemble it multiple times) and do some testing
Note that the gearbox is very noisy due to the input gears. These are my first ever gears and a re a crude involute profile making them load at speed. There are also some shafts that I will fix up as they are slightly undersized and the gears rattle a bit in the multiplier assembly at speed.
My biggest regret is the paint colour not matching!
I've gone for a slightly different style in the video, trying to maintain the flow, but turning the pace down a bit to get some more concepts across. Let me know if it does or doesn't work!

A small side project
Yeah I know, I splelt ridiculous wrong
We make the transpose assembly. This allows my imperial lathe to cut metric thread pitches by using a series of compund gears to approximate a reasonable 1.27 transpose ratio.
This is a chance to update where we are at with the build and review some design elements of the gearbox
We are getting close, the gearbox build progresses in the background...
It adds a swivel, telescopic length, and more stiffness to the boom.
It's a massive improvement on my old fixed wooden camera boom that would always get in my way
In this video we (by we I mean I) discuss the issues, solution, I make it happen, I make it happen again when I make a mistake, then discuss some engineering principals that apply to the boom.

I'm calling this part the multiplier assembly. It allows gear ratios from 1:64 to 64:1 in multiples of 2 (1:1, 1:2, 1:4... etc)
