February 2023 Patreon Free Music Poll #67 Darren Curtis Music 2023-07-13 | Cast your vote here: patreon.com/darrencurtismusic Today we have February's free music poll following closely behind the last. There are 4 new samples ready for some listening! The first is "Enchanting," and it's just that. This is a magical track I imagined taking place during some kind of fantasy movie where we're discovering some new world we never knew existed. Or perhaps we're undergoing some sort of change and finding abilities within we didn't know we had. The harp, flighty woodwinds, swelling strings and children's choir all lend to that feeling of wondrous fantasy.Second is "Neon City." This is a dark, urban track. We have fast paced, pumping synths, a low, gritty bass and synthetic string pads creating a moody, Sci-Fi atmosphere. I imagined being in a dangerous city with crime, poverty and suffering everywhere. This could be a great track for our hero to ride through the streets, take stock of everything and start setting injustices right. Our third is a cinematic, fantasy sample titled "Ignorance is Bliss." It's inspired a little by the Hobbits in that this is a feel-good, no worries, light orchestral piece. I could see this as a village theme in a place where everything is great. No worries. The harp and woodwinds give us an airy, light feeling. The chords on the strings provide us that cinematic mood. It's gonna be a good day! And lastly for this poll, we have an epic trailer track, "Danger Approacheth." This one is all about action and building tension. We start with some low drones and pads, but we quickly break into the fast strings and pumping guitar. We have rising horn lines for some added intensity and they end up taking the final chorus before we end. Let the fight begin! January 2023 Patreon Free Music Poll #66 Darren Curtis Music 2023-06-28 | Cast your vote here: patreon.com/darrencurtismusic Today we have January's Poll pulling its lazy butt out of bed and introducing us to 5 new samples. The first is a lighthearted Asian track named "Heart of Gold." I found this bendy kind of synth sound that I wasn't sure I was going to be able to use at first. But I went with it, surrounded it with some Chinese and Japanese instruments and came up with this. I think of it as a character theme for a super nice person who is pretty clumsy. Someone with a childlike quality to them. Sample 2 is "Cyber Space." It's a mix of synths and orchestral sounds. It has a bit of an open, exploratory vibe to it, but it also has a dark, grittiness lying underneath. That especially comes to the front about halfway through when everything stops and we slowly start to build again. That lonely, echoing guitar riff makes me feel like something is eerily wrong. I imagined being in a dark, crime infested city in some dystopian Sci-Fi flick. Numero Tres is a true crime sample called "The Ritual is Changing." It's a slow building, unsettling background piece that becomes more and more intense. We have so many different sounds playing in rounds. After a few bars a couple horn sections enter with some rising arcs to make things even more intense. The last touch is a clock that appears toward the end, almost as if to signal time is running out. This killer must be apprehended. Next up is an inspirational track named "Unstoppable." We have strings, horns, woodwinds, piano and drums fusing together to form a positive, upbeat track. This one was all about finding yourself, realizing what you want to do and going after it. You may not be satisfied with the you of today, but one day you'll be who you were meant to. I especially liked the image paired with this. And lastly we have "The Sickness." This is a creepy ambient track for an abandoned hospital or sanitarium. Some place where the patients may not have been treated the greatest. Perhaps some of the spirits of patients past still lurk the halls. I'll start a private poll for the second tier and higher to cast their vote for the piece they want finished. December 2022 Patreon Free Music Vote #65 Darren Curtis Music 2023-02-27 | Today we have the super-late December poll for 2022. There are 6 new samples ready to go! The first is a magical, fantasy track named "Arcane Forest." The harp and intro strings set the mood immediately. Then once everything enters and our piccolo takes the lead melody, we're fully immersed in this world of ancient knowledge and mysteries. I almost get an Elven vibe too. Maybe they, or some other fantasy race, inhabit this wondrous wood! The second sample is our horror track called "Voices in the Mist." We start with a low, droning soundscape and distorted voices that fade in and out. After the intro, we have shrill, bending strings to send shivers up some spines. We have the piano repeating deep notes and playing short runs on the higher notes, which echo and fade into the fog. Spooky! Up next is an idea I was kicking around originally as a commission for a Podcast. The job ended up falling through and I kind of liked it. The original sample was only 20 - 30 seconds long, so I gave it an intro and reworked it into this. It's kind of a gritty, synth piece that has tones of both darkness and heroism. I imagined this for a hero who has seen so much destruction and evil over time and it's wearing him down. But he's strong and vows to keep fighting no matter what! This is "One Hero." Fourth is a tension-building, underscore kind of thing named "The Standoff." It starts slowly and gradually more layers are added to ramp up the tension. We have some pulsing synths, bending strings and percussion that intensifies as things heat up. I imagined this playing literally, as the title suggests, in a final standoff between our hero and villain. Fifth up is "An Unlikely Crew." This is our lighthearted sample that starts with playful woodwinds and our scratchy sounding percussion called the Guiro. They are soon joined by some bass guitar and the trumpet, which plays the melody. It adds a little sense of adventure. So I got an idea that this theme was for a group of unlikely travelers who fall in with each other by chance and embark on a quest. I imagine they are arguing and fighting all the time, but they all end up growing very close. Last one is our True Crime sample called "The Motel." We have low, droning synths with some creepy, echoing piano and other sound effects all meant to create an unsettling atmosphere. In a bit of a nod to a classic killer, we have some high-pitched, stabbing strings. Just don't take a shower while listening to this and you should be good! November 2022 Patreon Free Music Poll #64 Darren Curtis Music 2023-01-30 | Hello Everyone,Today we finally have November's poll ready to go. The holidays and work really threw me into a chaotic time this year round, more so than usual, and I want to apologize for the delay. We will catch this up soon and get back on track. We have 4 new samples this time, the first a hybrid cowboy in space or steampunk sort of thing called "Future Cowboy." Our lead is a western sounding whistle that immediately makes me think Western movie. We have some cool synthetic bass and repeating plucks that give it a nice futuristic feeling and some fading strings to add depth and drama. I feel like this is a bold theme that's just waiting to burst into an epic finale.The second track is our comedy piece titled "Oh... Nuffin!" With the bouncy piano, pizzicato and flighty clarinet, I got this feeling of comic mischief where we have an innocent looking character up to no good. Of course, since they are so disarmingly sweet, they tend to get away with things. It kind of reminded me of a little kid getting caught by their parents. When asked what they're doing, of course the response is "nothing!"The third track is the horror entry, "Heavy Mist." I got the feeling of wandering through an endless, foggy forest that you just know is haunted. Or perhaps it's inhabited with creatures that most certainly mean me harm. The gliding piano riff gives us that otherworldly sense and the cello enhances that somber, dramatic feeling. I could see this being used in something dark fantasy too.The last is our true crime sample, "Disturbed Psyche." This one starts a little wonky as you'll probably think it doesn't fit the picture, and you'd be right! This crime piece starts from the perspective of our detective searching for clues. It has an almost classic Noir kind of intro. Once we hit the transition, it's all about our killer turning the tables on our hero. He's pulled one over on our P.I. The situation has become dire quickly, as the slamming percussion, bending horns and screaming trumpets illustrate. October 2022 Patreon Free Music Poll #63 Darren Curtis Music 2022-11-27 | Hello Everyone,Today we have October's Poll finally ready. November's is shortly on the way, even though the month is pretty much over... Anyhow, we have 5 new samples ready for some votes!The first is our true crime track, "Clues Not Being Found." I went in a different direction this time. Instead of the super dark, serial killer tracks I've been doing, this is more a mysterious noir kind of thing. Something that could possibly be in a lighter rendition of a Sherlock Holmes story. It still has darkness to it, but with the chimey celeste and the short stabs of the guitar, it almost adds a fantastical element that I could see being used for comic relief.Second is "Guardians of Atlantis." I actually intended for this to be a retro 80's action, Sci-Fi theme. But as it went on, it started taking some weird underwater level "Donkey Kong" turn. I couldn't get the underwater vibe out of my head, and paired with the action element, I got this idea in my head about an army that protects the lost city. Yeah, that makes sense!Third is our horror track for this poll. It's a mix of ambience and short melodic phrases called "Bewitching Hour." The primary melodic parts are played by a children's choir and the celeste, making a second appearance this poll. I had intended this track to be for some kind of underground, haunted vault, but as it went I got the sense of some kind of ritual or spell taking place more and more. With the bouncy harp and the happy piano, I just got this sense of a couple friends striking out on an adventure. Whether or not it's a quest to save the world, or just two friends exploring to see what they can see doesn't really matter. I get the feeling they're just happy seeing what they can see.The last track is "Monk it Up." I don't know what to say about this really. Who doesn't think a group of gangster monks chanting to a drum beat isn't cool? I imagined them walking down the streets teaching lessons to people the hard way. Haha. I don't even know where this came from or what it means or what it is. But I do think it's funny. Just whatever you do, don't ask about it! September 2022 Patreon Free Music Poll #62 Darren Curtis Music 2022-10-12 | Hello Everyone, September's well overdue poll is finally ready. My apologies for the delay once again. This time around we have 6 new samples. The first is a magical, foresty track called "Glowfly." We have fading strings, an echoing guitar and airy woodwinds providing us with an ethereal atmosphere not of this world. An almost banjo-like guitar called the Requinto takes our lead and some bass strings add a little depth. I was about to write that I was imagining myself wandering through an ancient, magical forest, then the thought struck me how many of these "magic forest" samples I've done. A few... They make me feel good! Next up is our horror sample, "The Vault." This is a more ambient style track you might hear as the backdrop in a darker show. Nothing really melodically going on, as it's solely focused on providing an eerie backdrop and not taking away from what's going on in front of us. There are lots of synthetic sounds in this. The high-pitched percussion and bending strings being the real "organic" elements. Third track is our lighthearted, comedy sample, "Just Hangin' Out." We start with some lively clarinet playing short notes to set the tone, some kick drum and bass. The flute takes the lead and a small trumpet section and harp/strings pop in and out as the answer the main melody. This is another one of those tracks where the bass could almost be the lead melody, which I seem to be doing in these lighthearted tracks. I think that feel-good pluckiness is hard to resist. Next comes the True Crime sample "Surveillance." This is more of a Sci-Fi or technology rendition of True Crime. Because of the synthetic elements here, it sounds like we're dealing with some kind of hacker ring or maybe some kind of internet stalker. We have echoing plucks, distorted sound effects, blaring horns and fading strings creating an atmosphere of darkness. "Cyber Ninja" is our fifth sample. It's a rock hybrid with orchestral and maybe Sci-Fi elements? We've got a synthetic bass, orchestral strings, rocking drum set and a rock lead guitar. I just kept getting the picture of some sort of super soldier developed to kick the crap out of anything that got in its way. The last one is another horror track that I put together very rapidly at the last minute. Found a bell in one of my libraries that I really love and just started messing around. This one is a mix of ambience and melody. I especially like when the organ comes in playing those sweeping up and down scales. It provides horror, strength and uncertainty. It is "Castle Dracule!" I can see this track turning more down the melodic path if it went on longer. I'll start a private poll for the second tier and higher to cast their vote for the piece they want finished. August 2022 Patreon Free Music Poll #61 Darren Curtis Music 2022-08-31 | Today we have August's poll ready to go with 5 new samples. The first is a weird mix of a beat, called "HarpsiClubbing." We have a harpsichord providing our dancey chords in a bouncy, swing-like beat. We have a hip-hop drum kit and very low synth bass. And finally there's orchestral strings and woodwinds that take turns going back and forth with eachother in a "question" and "answer" sort of way. I'm not quite sure how I'd classify this as it's kind of a weird mixture of sounds. It sounded like it wanted to be a club or swing track, but because of the sounds used it was something a little different. Next up we have a fantasy track called "The Lake of Life." It has a mystical feeling to it as we're introduced by the harp and fading strings. The lead instrument is a synthetic pluck that's layered with echoing choirs. After the first 34 seconds or so, we transition via some sweeping harps into a more melodramatic melody led by strings and woodwinds. Everything felt very magical, so naturally we have a picture of a purple forest and waterfall! The third track is our horror sample, named "Reviving Dead Memories." We have a distant piano, dark synthetic pads, looming strings and a choir that feels like it's that of ghostly voices calling to us from beyond. I felt as if we were back in a place from the past, perhaps a childhood home, and as we explored the rooms for the first time in years, we remember things we thought we had forgotten for good. These things are obviously filmed in delicious, ghostly "flashback" camera for spooky effect. Next is our lighthearted comedy piece, "Bad News Butler." We have heavy percussion and deep horns that provide a bit of a sound of attitude. They mix well with the plucky strings and airy woodwinds to give that "attitude" some levity. I imagined a servant of sorts that had the worst attitude in the world and, though he followed orders, couldn't help telling his employer exactly what he thought, often very brusquely. And lastly, we have "Zeroing In." This is our true crime sample for our serial killer finally closing on his target. He's done his research. Stalked the prey for weeks and learned everything about him. Tonight's the night. We have a mix of several different synth pads and noises. It finally culminates with the strings playing in short, fast, upward runs to illustrate the tension rising. Free Music Patreon Poll #60 - July 2022 Darren Curtis Music 2022-07-28 | Today July's poll is up and ready to go with 5 new samples! The first is an epic villain theme called "The Demon Lord." We start with heavy, distorted drums and bass strings to set the mood. The organ comes next to give us a final battle, Armageddon type feeling. Then the choirs add the final, over-the-top sauce that makes us realize how powerful this foe really is. Next up is "The Spirit of the Forest." This is an ethereal, magical track with a somber / dark touch that makes me think this place has many ancient secrets yet to be discovered. It's tucked away in its own little part of the world. The harp and fading strings immediately set the mood, and possibly give us a wintry kind of feeling. The synth bass adds a lot to the darker tone and the airy woodwinds are perfect for that magical atmosphere. Up next is our True Crime track for the month, "Where the Monster was Born." I imaged this was the part of the story where our detectives found our killer's childhood home and discover his dark upbringing. This is where our possibly once innocent criminal spent his formative years, probably in a lot of isolation. This is where his mind ventured to its murkiest depths and the "monster" that exists today was incubated. We have driving, high-pitched percussion, droning strings and some meandering piano that provides a mixture of feelings. It provides some sickening horror, but almost adds a tender touch, as if we feel sorry for our criminal after seeing where he grew up. Next is our Comedy track, "Real Funny, Dood..." This piece has a playful, prank-ness about it. It felt like lighthearted humor, but at someone else's expense. There's a grumpy, old badger here to me that makes me think there's someone here not quite "in" on the joke. And when I saw the picture of that cat having a terrible, rotten, no-good, horrible day, I thought that summed it up perfectly. We have a couple different synths with some playful pluckiness to them, pizzicato strings, light percussion and some horns to cap it off. And lastly, we have our Horror sample, "Under the Asylum." This is a mixture of sound design stuffs with short, melodic ideas. I imagined being trapped in an abandoned, and possibly haunted, place. Several sound effects used here could be ghostly screams. And the deep strings provide us with a sort of droning helplessness. The deep booms that serve as percussion here and there, made me think we were in a professional or industrial kind of setting, at least at one point in time. Which is why I chose the hospital / asylum angle, rather than a more personal setting, such as a haunted house. Free Music Poll #59 - June 2022 Darren Curtis Music 2022-07-11 | Today we have the super late June Poll with 4 new samples. I apologize for the lateness! Things at work have been extremely hectic the last few weeks. The first is our horror sample called "The Lady of the House." It's a dramatic horror piece kind of in the vein of "The Summoning." I kept thinking of vampires and thought this might be a good theme for a lady vampire who has her own abode off the beaten path, where she lures passersby and feasts on them. The second is "The Six Million Dollar Villain," which, by today's standards, might actually be a pretty cheap super villain... Anyway, I was thinking of a retro film kind of robotic super-soldier constructed with one thing in mind - Pure Destruction. We've got synthetic brass, plucks and pads mixed with orchestral string sections and a metal drum kit for a neat little combination. The third track is our more lighthearted / comedy outing. This one has a goofy, sinister feeling to it. I was going almost for a Tantalus kind of theme from Final Fantasy 9, for anyone familiar with it. I liked it being a bad guy kind of track, but it having an upbeat kind of feeling. Maybe our bad guy or gang is a bit clumsy? Maybe they're extremely loyal and friendly to each other and that gives us a warm, cozy feeling as they rob that castle or bank! Lastly, we have our true crime track. This one is a slow tension builder and a little experimental. The main synth plucks are all over the place, playing notes in and out of key. The piano and percussion are steadily building, but just kind of providing the pacing. Finally, our strings burst onto the scene and we're in full panic mode. Free Music Poll #58 - May 2022 Darren Curtis Music 2022-05-25 | Hello Everyone,Today May's Poll is ready to go with 5 new samples. If you haven't gotten your vote in for April's, remember there are still a couple days to do that. It ends on Friday at Midnight! Now on to the new tracks!The first is "Crystallized World." It's a dark, magical piece with echoing piano, harp, strings and some woodwind trills. I imagined being in a disjointed world overrun with weird, magical land formations and creatures. A place where time seems to have next to no meaning or impact. A world lost in some enchanted rift.The second is our True Crime sample named "Making the Break." This one is about time running out as our detectives are right on top of the criminal, and it's literally a chase. We have dark strings, sinister synth plucks, fast hi-hats to add to the frantic chase and a steady kick drum, almost mirroring an accelerated heart beat. Then at a break-neck cut, we transition to "You Think This is Funny?" This is our lighthearted, comedy sample. It's a fairly simple little tune with a chilled out vibraphone, a plucky bass and pizzicato strings. We also have some trumpets throwing in some crescendos and tuba providing a march-like counter line with the bass. The brass kind of give us a little touch of obnoxious to add to the light, comedic feeling.The fourth is our horror track. "Haunted Bunker" is very atmospheric and layered with evolving soundscape elements and echoing sound effects. We start a little quietly, but about halfway through our horns enter with some quick bursts. We have a fast string run that's here and gone before you know it. And the most melodic part is that haunted, plucky thing that fades in and out of its ascending/descending pattern. Lastly, we have "The Dark One." This is like a final battle, death march. Our heroes are at the end of the film, and they're faced with the most powerful villain they've ever encountered. We have powerful, low brass screaming at us. We have timpani providing our war percussion. Several horns and trumpets provide the strong melody and it's backed by the choirs, which give us that end battle, Armageddon kind of feeling. Free Music Patreon Poll #57 - April 2022 Darren Curtis Music 2022-05-13 | Cast your vote for the track you want finished next on Patreon: patreon.com/darrencurtismusic Download all my free to use music here: darrencurtismusic.com Today, we finally have April's poll ready. Due to a heavy work schedule and some personal stuffs, I fell behind a bit here. My apologies, everyone. I'm currently working on May's poll and most likely will have that one going before this one ends, so they might be running a couple days concurrently. Okay, now onto the new samples, of which there are 5. The first is a dark fantasy track named "The Elves of Night." We have a harp to set a foresty kind of mood and some rising strings for our dark fantasy element. The percussion is some echoing wooden sticks that pair well with the strings. We also have a violin and some flute, because everyone knows you can't have fantasy and elves around without some kind of airy woodwind! The second is an atmospheric horror track called "Asylum." It starts with some evolving pads that have a little grit to their sound. The other elements slowly enter to add to the sense of tension. We have cello, violins, a bass drum and finally the piano, which plays in rising fashion, especially that last little bar that borderline sounds happy. Played against all the dark background sound, it kind of felt like it gave it a sickening sense of contentment, as if something enjoyed being trapped in the asylum because it's where it belongs. Next for the comedy track this month is "Lunch is Soived." We've got some vibraphone, light percussion, an upbeat bass, pizzicato strings and some horns. I got a really nice, relaxing vibe from this one, as if we were having a chilled out picnic. Maybe Mr. Fox catches his marshmallow on fire and in a panic to put it out accidentally catches Mr. Bear on fire and he goes up in flames. Lighthearted antics like that! Fourth is "Ride to Glory." This is a hybrid orchestral beat. We've got some high-pitched glockenspiel, fast strings, strong brass and an electric drum kit. The wind-like riser sound effect definitely needs a little work, but I thought it was kind of cool how it represented the spiral cyclone effect on the horse and cape in the picture. Almost as if our hero was using a super move to ride faster. Forward to battle! And lastly we have "Murderer's Lair." This is our true crime track. It's got a gritty synth bass, some fast hi-hats to add to the intensity and horns playing in arcs and short stabs. I was getting a more evil tone from this one. Several of the crime tracks I've written before, I kind of felt were from the perspective of the detective hunting the killer. For me, this one felt more like someone was trapped and at the mercy of the psycho. Remember, it puts the lotion on its skin. Hybrid Experimental Día de Muertos Type Theme Dance of the Dead Royalty Free Music Darren Curtis Music 2022-04-26 | Today we have an experimental one. "Dance of the Dead" for some reason reminded me of some kind of hybrid take on the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos. I know it doesn't necessarily sound Mexican or Spanish in nature per se, but the way everything came together, it's just where my mind was led. It has an upbeat rhythm and sounds like it could be played at a festival, but also has a crazy lead melody on the Virginal that gave it a dark fantasy, "Night Before Christmas" feeling. Anyway, whatever it is, it is. I've been working long days the last couple weeks and I've been working on this with what little time I have when I get home. Please forgive any ramblings or misspellings in this post as I've just gotten home to write this! This month we have 6 new samples up for grabs. For the Patron Poll we ran and asked what kinds of music everyone wanted, we had two votes for "True Crime/Noir," one for "Comedic" and one for "Dark/Horror." So from here on out, you'll see at least one track from each of those in these polls! The first sample is "Pushing Up Daisies." This is a detective/Noir track that uses a cool little twist on a chord progression from the original James Bond theme. I put it to some lounge type instruments to give it a 1950's detective feeling and I thought it turned out pretty neat. It sounds like our private eye is lounging in a seedy, smoke-filled bar, having a drink as he waits for some shady meeting with an even shadier character. Next up is a little comedic piece called "Why Can't I Eat Like a Normal Wolf?" Haha. Don't ask. This for me had a tone that I thought lent itself to a comedy scene in a game that featured a character being outrageously angry. I thought of someone like Booster from "Super Mario RPG," or maybe even a scene from the Disgaea series where one of the people... erm demons... is over-the-top complaining about something childish. I can imagine Etna killing a lot of Prinnies to this. The third track, "Being Hunted," is dark and atmospheric. It mixes lots of sound effects and evolving pads with short melodic elements, primarily on the piano. I literally imagined being hunted by someone or something. The climax comes toward the end of the sample when the drums kick in and a few new plucky, moving pads explode onto the scene. I feel like the chase is on. The hunt is on! Mr. Number 4 is an upbeat, hybrid orchestral piece named "Warrior of Justice." This has motivation and positivity all over it. It's all about storming the castle in the name of justice. It's about succeeding where all hope seems lost. We've got up tempo drums, synthetic plucks, fast strings, blaring horns and dramatic vocals and piano to carry our lead melody and top it off! The fifth track is all mooshy! Eww! "The Light in Your Heart" is a dramatic, perhaps even cheesy, romance theme featuring a soft piano riff that feels fragile, and perhaps even childlike, as if to signify the love is pure. The full orchestra comes in a couple times, notably at the end to really makes things melodramatic. Especially at the end when the female soloist "Oohs" along in full force. The last track is "My Favorite Doll." No, it's not a Bob Hope movie. It's an unsettling, horror theme with a music box taking the lead. It's a sinister lullaby. I feel as though it wants to lull us into a false sense of safety, while at the same time it's warning us of wicked evil stuff. Especially with the strings bending up and down. Free Upcoming Mediterranean Noir Type Music Mediterranean Countryside Preview Darren Curtis Music 2022-03-09 | This is a sneak preview to the first of a few tracks I've written for a detective game taking place in a fictional, Mediterranean styled country. The tracks will be released freely for everyone once I finish the collection. I'm at 7 or 8 now, and think I'll try to round it out to 10.I'm doing this to help out a Dev buddy of mine I've known awhile. His idea was to have the tracks paced slow to moderately, to have them influenced by a few Mediterranean countries he outlined, and not to be too heavily orchestrated so they didn't feel overly busy or cinematic. The first track is the pirate themed "Sea Dogs Never Die." I wanted to do a more organic sounding track with old, medieval style instruments, but I'm currently having some compatibility issues with that particular player and my ancient system. So this turned into a more cinematic style pirate piece with booming percussion, blaring horns and ripping strings. The lead horns have a sort of noble feeling to them that I felt played well against the menacing strings. I felt like it gave the pirates a sense of pride in their work. Even though they're the scourge of the seas, they're a proud brotherhood. And they'll slit your gullet if you disagree! Next, we slam to a halt with a much softer piece called "Flower of Life." We start with a majestic harp that immediately sets our magical, fantasy tone. The strings slowly come in and finally the woodwinds take our lead. A solo violin plays a counter melody. I chose smaller sections of instruments and the solo violin to make things feel more intimate and airy. And how can you not have woodwinds when there are elves and fairy type beings around? We explode back into action with "Battle in Hell." We have distorted percussion and a cathedral organ to kick things off. The strings explode onto the scene and really provide the intensity for this track. I tried something a little different with them. I'm kind of dancing in and out of the scale's tonal center, which makes this track feel like it's off balance. It's a bit disorienting and I thought it fit super well with the chaotic tone I was trying to set. Finally, toward the end of the sample, I actually bring the piece to its center, and you can hear it immediately. Those last organ chords serve as a transition to let us know something is happening and changing in the fight, and it also gives it a slightly uplifting and religious feeling which I thought served the piece pretty well too. We break our necks once again and grind to a halt with the chilled out, Sci-Fi piece "The City Hub." This is a relaxing beat that I imagined would suit a bustling, futuristic city pretty well as we casually explore and mingle with the crowds. The high, floaty strings and plucks set the tone nicely to start. We have a lush pad providing depth and a cool synthetic lead for our main melody. I purposely filtered most of the high end on the drums so they wouldn't be too in our faces. I liked the lo-fi sound, especially on the snare. And lastly, we have "Wicked Lullaby." This track starts with a fragile, possibly intimate, vibe with just the strings and celeste. We feel on edge, but it's so child-like it's almost disarming. Then once the piano enters, it's unhinged from here on out. It's not quite the same as "Battle in Hell," but I did try some weird notation with the piano purposely to give it a playfully demented feeling. We slowly descend down the keys as the piece progresses, as if to signify how we're spiraling out of control. Free Music Patreon Poll #54 - January 2022 Darren Curtis Music 2022-01-22 | Cast your vote for the track you want finished next on Patreon: patreon.com/darrencurtismusic Today we have January's poll ready to go. This time around we have 6 new samples up for grabs. The first is a fusion between a Bulgarian/Gypsy sound and a song beat. We start with two stringed guitar-like instruments. The double bass enters and gives us a toe-tapping,almost funky rhythm. We have some clapping for the high percussion and, naturally, a drum beat. I was torn between this being a track for an exotic gypsy princess character or some kind of ritualistic dance. I went more with the former as it's named "The Gypsy Princess," though it's really an amalgamation of the two as she could be performing some kind of ceremonial dance, right? The second is "Forest Guardian." This track starts with short strings and some glockenspiel for a bit of whimsical magic. The woodwinds and brass take the lead melody when it bursts onto the scene, with the strings providing support. I really fell in love with the flowing violin towards the end playing up and down the chords. I got a sense of being in a deeply magical place full of wonder and ancient knowledge. Up next is "On the Case," a detective, noir track. It starts with a bass and the glockenspiel is back again, giving us a little bit of a "Bully" vibe. We have some muted brass playing in short "wahs" that really put us over the top in the whole black and white detective movie vein. The french horns play in slow arcs to add a sense of danger and our melody is taken by a sax and trumpet duo. And now on to the soft and peaceful "Magical Innocence." We start with light piano which is soon joined by the harp. We really have a mood of calmness set and it makes me feel light as a feather. A woodwind section takes the lead, with the oboe and clarinet being the principle sounds. After their section, we pull back a bit with just the harp and strings continuing softly on the journey. Make sure you have your seat belt on, because after that soft interlude, we break-neck cut into some dark Sci-Fi territory. We have an evolving, grungy synth sound that keeps fading in and out. After a couple bars the heavy, distorted percussion starts slamming and we have several different sound effects that are layered sporadically throughout the track. The closest thing to a "lead melody" here is the echoing, saw type sound that plays in short 3 note spurts. I felt like I was stuck in darkness, possibly underground, with nowhere to go. Thus "Endless Corridor" was born. And lastly we have "Hero's Legacy." This starts on an extremely triumphant note that has more of the orchestra playing at once to start with a bang. I feel like if this wins, I'd really have to sharpen that up a bit and make it more epic. From there we fly through some fast trumpet lines which leads us into our heroic melody. We have bold timpani for percussion, strong horn sections taking the leads and the trumpets continuing their fast lines over the top. After our intro, we delve into a more reflective section with just the strings and woodwinds. I'll start a private poll for the second tier and higher to cast your vote for the piece you want finished. Voting will end February 4th, so there's plenty of time to decide!

Free Music Patreon Poll #53 - December 2021 Darren Curtis Music 2022-01-02 | Cast your vote for the track you want finished next on Patreon: patreon.com/darrencurtismusic Hello Everyone, Today we have December's Poll up and running. The holidays and work were especially hectic for me this year. More so than normal, so I apologize for not having this done sooner. This time around we have 5 new samples ready to go. The first is called "The Courage of One." It's a Chinese, hybrid beat featuring the traditional Guzheng and Pipa, which are the first two "plucky" instruments you hear respectively. This is a hero theme, so the pacing and sound is fairly noble and upbeat. The drums provide a pop or hip hop element and the lead melody is taken by woodwinds and the Erhu. At the very end, the strong horns play a counter melody and provide that last little bit of honor to the tone. The second is a dark gypsy piece named "Immortality Ritual." It starts with a repeating, descending riff on a Tamboura, an instrument similar to a Mandolin. We have some dark, medieval sounding strings providing our swelling chords. We have a Bulgarian choir that really helps set the mood with their chant-like singing. The violin takes the lead and plays a flowing, haunting melody. Next up is "Swinging Keys," named so for the bouncy piano rhythm. The piano sets the tone immediately as it explodes on the scene. The lead melody is taken by a few groups of woodwinds. The brass really provides a lot of punch and is fun in this one. After a few bars that set the mood, we go into a small build-up with a synth riser that helps explode us into the chorus. The Saxophone blares on the scene and the piano's bass line turns it up full force. The fourth is another hero theme, this one in more of a Sci-Fi / Action vein. We open with some bold chords and a little horn to set up our over-the-top, save the day feeling. After the intro, the bass starts pumping and the deep percussion booming. I can fully imagine a single hero flying in to save the city from certain destruction. Especially once the piece hits full force with the snare drum line and horns. And lastly we have "Tethered Torment." This is a crawling, dark tension builder. The clock is the central core that ties everything together and it starts to increase its pace as the track picks up. The strings are droning and eerie. Once the higher pitched anvils and the short horns kick in, we've gone full dark side. I thought this would be a nice theme for a stalker or killer in a movie. Who knows what kind of unspeakable horrors are running through his mind? I'll start a private poll for the second tier and higher to cast your vote for the piece you want finished.
