I'd always looked at it as the period that I started a strict diet and exercise regimen and never really gave it a second thought. Also, my knowledge of eating disorders were pretty much restricted to the most common and that's anorexia and bulimia. What I did doesn't fit the criteria for either. Plus, everyone knew what I was doing and praised me for it! Surely people don't high five you for making bad choices? Turns out they can!As I spoke about my experience I found that I was not the only one negatively effected by the toxic body image of the early 2000's. The pressure to be underweight was very real and it was everywhere. My story is in no way meant to be diet advice -- Just because it worked, doesn't mean it's right. What I did was in no way healthy, it was very much an eating disorder and it was dangerous. The world is suffering right now and New York is taking a particularly brutal beating being the epicenter of the virus. It's made me realize how much this place has changed. How much I still love it and how I've taken it for granted. Since Starbucks is out of the question for a lot of us I have my little hack that I came up with when I was in school and we were a one income household. That sort of budget doesn't allow for $5 lattes every day. Using instant coffee, milk, sugar and vanilla extract I made my own vanilla lattes at home and they're pretty good.
