Watch Me Work: Embroidery Stitch Applique Technique - The Indigenous Seamstress Cher Thomas Designs 2020-08-25 | Ha:l Hio:sik hua, this is the O'odham Squash Blossom basket design. Many south-western Indigenous cultures have a lot of love for the humble squash blossom. Often bright orange, these flowers represent Indigenous peoples' farming tradition and the feminine part of fertility. In my tribal group, the O'odham wove coiled baskets with this geometrical design; the squash blossom design can have as many as 12 petals, this is an example of a 4 petal squash blossom. I have sewn a LOT of squash blossoms in my day! I used to sew these down by paying attention to the small windows and squares and U shaped designed windows in the applique. And it was way too time consuming! With time, I realized that there were lines in the pattern, and if I followed these lines and their round patterns, I could cut my sewing time in half. With practice I developed this sewing technique in rose gold copper lame. Anyway - I created this video to show how I sew down this design using an embroidery satin stitch on my sewing machine. My intention with this design was to show the different ways we can play with positive and negative space and that background designates which tone is deep or bright.
