STAFFORD: We got the vehicle under control after about, I'd estimate, a 360-degree maneuver.
YOUNG: How close did you get to gimbal lock?
CERNAN: Close enough to get the warning light on.
YOUNG: Better than 5 degrees then.
CERNAN: Somewhere between 15 degrees and 5 degrees. I'm not sure how far around we went. I was able to see the horizon out the window and the lunar surface start moving and I don't know, on the 8-ball, exactly what attitude we realized. We could have maneuvered 30 degrees or we could have maneuvered 90 degrees. All I know is that it was fairly slow, but positive. Whether we did a 360-degree maneuver is difficult for me to say."

On SA-4 all of the fairings and retrorockets were flown as the would be with a live S-IV stage, and the retrorockets were fired, but the stages did not separate (on purpose). One engine was also purposely shut down about 100 seconds into the flight, and the other engines compensated correctly for the loss. The launch date was March 28, 1963, and the mission lasted 15 minutes, a suborbital launch. The vehicle reached an altitude of 129 km (80 miles).Saturn 1 (SA-5) Launch Color TV FeedMark Gray2013-04-16 | SA-5 was the first orbital Saturn 1 flight, the first with a live S-IV stage. The S-IV mounted 6 RL-10 oxygen/hydrogen engines. The launch occurred on Cape Canaveral launch complex 37B, on January 29, 1964. The second stage entered orbit as the largest ever at that time, making around 12,000 orbits before the orbit decayed.Saturn 1 (SA-3) LaunchMark Gray2013-04-15 | The November 16, 1962 launch of the Saturn 1, with a dummy upper stage, was the second Project Highwater flight, in which the rocket was destroyed purposely releasing water into the upper atmosphere. The flight reached an altitude of 167 km (103 miles). This was the first launch from complex 34 featuring a tower. SA-1 and SA-2 were serviced at launch through masts which fell away.Saturn 1 (SA-2) LaunchMark Gray2013-04-15 | The second launch of a Saturn 1 rocket. Suborbital mission contained dummy upper stage. Extra baffles were added in propellant tanks to inhibit sloshing. At 65.4 miles the vehicle was destroyed, on purpose, to release water on board. Saturn 1B rockets served as ferries to Skylab, and were launched from launch complex 39 using the infrastructure created for the Saturn V. A "milkstool" was built to bring the Saturn 1B up to the appropriate levels for spacecraft servicing. Using complex 39 was deemed less expensive than maintaining complex 34 for Saturn 1B launches. The only manned Saturn 1B launched from complex 34 was the Apollo 7 mission.

On AS-203, this camera was used to study the behavior of the liquid hydrogen inside the S-IVB stage in orbit. During a lunar mission, the S-IVB would be in orbital coast until it restarted to send the spacecraft to the Moon. The data from this flight built confidence that when required to restart for the lunar trajectory the stage would be ready to go.
