The report, titled ‘Shifting the Lens’, looks at the circumstances surrounding the sleep-related deaths of 48 infants in Manitoba between 2019 to 2021.
It found that 81 per cent of the infants who died were Indigenous and 27 per cent of the deaths occurred in First Nations communities.
64 per cent of infants who died were living in overcrowded homes and one in three households didn't have a safe sleep surface available for the babies.
69 per cent of the families had degrees of involvement with child and family services at the time of or in the year prior to the infant's death.
The report also found that 70 per cent of the infants' biological mothers were known to be victims of intimate partner violence and half of the mothers experienced some form of abuse or neglect as children.
