Across Africa, only about 23,000 lions remain. However the lion population continues to decline as habitats shrink and become more fragmented.
This can lead to increased human-wildlife conflict as lions enter community areas and prey on livestock, threatening human safety and livelihoods while putting lions at risk of retaliatory killings. Protecting and restoring habitat connectivity is critical to helping lions move safely and freely.
That’s why WWF, alongside local partners and communities, is monitoring lion populations and reducing human-wildlife conflict to help protect these iconic big cats.
