Milpa YYC - Calgarys newest Mexican Restaurant Dave Cheung 2023-02-19 | @MilpaYYC is Calgary's newest Mexican small plates and cocktail bar brought to us by @Chef Elia Herrera. We were lucky enough to snag a table on a busy weekend for their late night taco specials. Before even seeing the food we were blown away by the stunning space featuring grand colonial style archways that truly made you feel like you were on a magical Mexican adventure. Kudos to local architectural Designer @Bold.Workshop for making this vision happen.We started off with the salsa tasting and even though they had (sadly) run out of plantain and taro chips, the variety of interesting salsas were still delicious.I was looking forward to trying mixologist @johnfairholms' creative cocktails many of which incorporate the smoky layers of mezcal. I had the Tomatillo Martini, and Dave really enjoyed the not too sweet zero-proof Apple cucumber Spritz.For tacos, we ordered the Birria, Carnitas and Baja Fish. *Loved* the house made corn tortillas. All the flavours were so bright, fresh and layered. Unfortunately our order of the mushroom and chicken tacos went to another table, but Dave was happy we got to skip straight to dessert.My second cocktail was the Fire & Flora, a spin on the negroni, which was beautifully balanced and thoughtfully delicious.Dessert was the Peanut Horchata Paletta.... a horchata ice cream bar dipped in chocolate with grape Kool-Aid marshmallow and an amaranth puff. Sony A7Siii skintone, AF and built-in mic test Dave Cheung 2020-09-29 | On a quest to see what the A7Siii is capable of in the "real world". Impressive skin tones and saturation out of the camera (Picture Profile = off) and so easy to add contrast! AF is a game-changer compared to the unusable AF of the A7iii. And 1080p 422 10-bit is showing great promise for many of my shoots. It might be a placebo, but the built-in mics seem to be better than my A7iii?? 4K is sharper, but the bandwidth required for storing and editing is heavy. Will definitely want to shoot 4K sparingly for jobs that $$$$. DJI Mavic Mini Real-World Indoor Footage from a drone noob Dave Cheung 2019-11-15 | Unretouched indoor DJI Mavic Mini footage from a total drone noob. Only lit by house lights (dark outside). Initial thoughts: so fun and easy to fly, but the Mini did go nuts on me once - crashing into the ceiling and walls before it came low enough for me to flip it upside down to stop it. Definitely glad I had the propeller guards on. Some noticeable noise in the shadows, but not objectionable and easily removed in post. Though I wish for manual exposure control, I'll admit DJI's auto-everything handled this low-light situation quite well. Colour me impressed! Looking forward to testing it further.
