Since then, it has become an epidemic. The reason for this is that Alzheimer's disease, which causes 70% of all cases of dementia, is a metabolic disease of the brain. And our metabolic health has gotten far worse in recent decades. This is why drug companies who believe Alzheimers' is a genetic condition have failed, despite spending billions of dollars. Don't be misled by the recent approval of an a drug (Aduhelm) by the FDA - 10 of 11 members of the FDA's own scientific advisory panel expressed the opinion that the use of this new (and expensive) drug was not supported by science.
Nor does the promise of genetic therapy offer much hope. How could genetics explain a condition which has gone from being only just described a little over 100 years ago to epidemic proporotions. Rather it is much more likely that lifestyle is to blame. Even the APOE4 gene doesn't necessarily mean one will develop dementia, for genetics is not fate.

The purpose of this documentary is to assess the science behind plant based diets. This in the context of increasing popularity of these diets (in part driven by a wildly popular pro-vegetarian program from the same broadcaster 10 years prior) to see whether the health claims of plant based diets stack up.
Since the recording of this interview, a recently published systematic review (cochrane.org/CD013501/VASC_vegan-diets-prevention-cardiovascular-disease) on vegan diets found that there have been zero randomised controlled trials evaluating clinical outcomes of pure plant based diets. This finding at the very least, should bring into question the validity of claims made regarding putative health benefits of vegan diets.

FODMAPs and fibre are both poorly digestable and can be fermented by our gut bacteria producing gas, which leads to bloating. Some of the gases produced, such as methane, can also reduce intestinal activity, causing a degree of constipation. This can be further exacerbated by fibre, which by increasing faecal bulk, makes them more difficult to pass. To add insult to injury, FODMAPs can attract water, causing a combination of constipation and diarrhoea. This is why irritable bowel syndrome often has features of both constipation and diarrhoea. Dr Paul Mason describes how ketogenic diets are often high in foods containing both fibre and FODMAPs and reducing their quantities often leads to significant improvements.Continuous glucose monitors: knowing the impact of each food on YOUR blood sugars improves diabetes.Paul Mason2019-05-24 | The availability of continuous glucose monitors now means patients can determine which foods most impact their sugar levels based on their personal metabolism.
