What is the essence that is the first thing you feel, but you are not aware of it? No, it’s not the temperature, it’s not the light, it’s not the view, but nevertheless the essence is not esoteric, it is here and now, it’s even quantifiable, you can measure it. I wouldn’t say it’s beyond our senses and I wouldn’t dare to say it is within the reach of our senses, but it is definitely beyond our awareness. What is the essence of a space? The essence of a space lies in its emptiness in its spaciousness. You can not touch empty space, you can not smell it and certainly you can’t see the empty space. All you can see is where the empty space ends, like the walls, the furniture, the windows, the doors. The essence lies on the opposite side of the spectrum of our senses, yet we all know it exists. If I remember correctly Susan Sontag wrote something along those lines about the photography as a medium. Photography as a medium is invisible to the eye. All you can see is what the photograph is representing to you. A face of a loved one, a memory of an event, a tree, a landscape, etc. The photograph as the medium is invisible. If you turn the photograph around all you see is the paper, the carrier, the photograph “disappears”. I guess that’s the subconscious drive of my quest into hand-made photography processes. I love to hold a container of silvernitrate crystals in one hand and a pack of clear glass plates in the other, feeling the weight and letting the buzz spread from my hands upwards. Feeling the potential of the images that will be born out of that weight. I love looking at my hands holding the raw materials and feeling thankfulness for what these hands can do, how these hands will serve this vision, this potential. The handmade photography is my portal to the essence of my being, the essence of my existence. I can not describe it with words, I can not even photograph it. But what I do hope is that my photographs will serve to the viewer as a pointer into a certain direction, that my photographs will leave a crumb trail to the essence that I feel, the essence that I am. Perhaps some of you can already see the essence in art or some other beautiful craft or even in any aspect of the ordinary daily life. If you do, the essence that you feel is is not in the photograph, it is not out from this world, the essence is inside you. My father died about a month ago. In his last days I’ve seen in his eyes the essence of his being. The being stripped away from life’s roles, without any expectations for the future and without any memories of the past. The peacefulness and kindness radiated from his eyes inspite the physical pain. In the last days of my father’s life I’ve recognized the essence of us, human beings. Thank you!
Wet Plate Collodion manual - tests of AgNO3 Borut Peterlin 2022-12-14 | I'm working on my wet plate collodion manual and in this episode I'm sharing with you few results after testing four silvernitrate baths. 1) A fresh 9% silvernitrate bath2) Somewhat used silvernitrate bath, but filtered and with topped up to 9%3) Boiled only with water, sunned filtered and topped up to 9%4) Boiled with baking soda, sunned, filtered and topped up to 9%The best result are given by the fourth silvernitrate bath, but you will decide if it's worth the effort. I've decided to cut that time and use it for something else. All of my early memories of a bonfire include a guitar and singing and because I don't know any, I've decided to learn to play a guitar. A photograph from chimney soot! A pure carbon print! Borut Peterlin 2022-01-14 | My dear viewers, as every January also this January I've took some time to learn something new about my process. I fulfilled my wish of making a good print out of chimney soot. That's where carbon transfer printing process got the name from. I've also bought bookbinding course, he, he... OK, about this vlog. It is short. It represents my second attempt to make a print out of chimney soot and I can see some areas of improvement, that's why I have not shared my recipes. I can tell you that in the past I've tried to do that, but I've failed and give up because I didn't found a solution hot to get the air bubbles out and at the same time prevent soot sedimenting. The solution I found is ultrasound cleaner. That brakes all the bubbles in a minute, before soot have time to sediment. Also my material is much harder to work with, in comparison with commercial Kramer Lamp Black product. I have some theories how to improve the solubility of gelatine. Also I can make smaller particles of carbon. I will share all my information when I will feel that I've figured out all the characteristics. It was my first nights sleeping in the cabin, so I had to do lots of cleaning before I was feeling comfortable to lay down. I've especially checked the chimney, since in the past 15 years nobody was using the cabin. Except migrants coming from south stopping on their way to the promise land. I've recycled some of my drone footage from 2016. I don't have a drone anymore and now I'm investing all the money in the cabin, so I wasn't planning to buy it. I’ve described him my wish, to have a darkroom winch that will rock my trays during processing prints. It took some time to test different solutions and this version of the darkroom winch proved to be the best one. It’s powerful enough to rock a big tray with 10 litres of water inside. More then enough. If it’s too much of the weight the wheel just slips and no harm done to the electric motor. How to make a ground glass for a large format camera. DIY - Vlog #105 Borut Peterlin 2020-12-12 | Last week I've made a ground glass for my Linhof Kardan 5x7" camera and I've done many tests in carbon double transfer carbon print process. I'm very pleased with the ground glass and the mixing of potassium dichromate with sodium hidroxide. I'm truly amazed that after four days standing at room temperature I was getting perfectly clear whites and rich blacks. Anyway I skipped two ground glass tricks in my vlog. If in emergency, when you traveled to a location and you brake the ground glass, you can make one on the spot. 1) the best is to have some silicon carbide with you and you can make one in 30 minutes. 2) If you don't have the silicon carbide, go and buy finest sanding paper you can get. Most likely it will be too coarse, so you can add some ash from fire place or some other material, like salt with oversaturated water or if you are wet plate collodion photographer, then you have on you the ferrous sulphate and if you add very little water, it will make a fine grinding powder. 3) if you are a wet plate collodion photographer, then you cut your glass to the size of the ground glass, pour collodion on it and sub it into silvernitrate for two minutes. That will make the glass milky in just the right way to work as a good ground glass. OK, now this is done, now I can start preparing for my epic Christmas special! My best prints for my best patreons! Vlog #104 Borut Peterlin 2020-11-26 | In this vlog I've shared with you some workflow of mine and how I've created these beautiful carbon prints. I wanted to send to my patreons the best print I could do and of course carbon print is the best printing process ever invented. But it's also one of the slowest processes, so I had to figure out how to make multiple prints at the same time. The solution was to take many frames of the same motive. Let me confess that the road in the fog frame didn't happen, due to a really expired film.
