Really Bad Maiden Flight on the New Freewing F-14 (twin 64mm) Sukos Hobbies 2024-03-25 | Link to RCG Discussion:rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4516851-NEW-Freewing-Twin-64mm-F14-Tomcat/page34#post52290449Today-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We had a break in the weather and I was able to get my plane out to the field. I did the maiden flight, and honestly, it's the worst Maiden I've probably ever experienced where I still got the plane back in one piece.I had all the controls set up per the manual. CG right on the marks on the wings. I did all this to be safe and have a predictable experience. I figured I could always push the CG back more on the next flight if I wanted to.Well, almost immediately after take off something was wrong. Even a few hours after the event, I have a really hard time describing what was wrong. If I had to describe it, it most similarly felt like a mixture of two (bad) experiences I've had on other planes. One was that feeling of a plane where the servo isn't recentering properly. It sort of felt like this on all axis. Also, it sort of felt like it did when I had an airplane where the gyro was extremely poorly programmed, or even had the gains in the wrong direction. But, PreFlight checks and post flight checks both showed the gyro was moving in the correct direction on this plane and the servos all seem to be centering just fine. Also, within a minute of flight, I turned off the gyro thinking that was the issue. I honestly can't say if it made it fly more predictably.The plane flew incredibly unstable, for lack of a better way to put it. I nearly lost it at least half a dozen times during my 4-minute flight. Most of that time was spent trying to assess the situation, while keeping the ground and the aircraft at a safe distance from one another. I also required a ridiculous amount of down / Back trim on the elevator to fly neutral. In fact, I ran out of trim... So, I'm not sure those CG marks, combined with the manual's recommendation of elevator position are a great combo.To say I am nervous about flying again is an understatement. Especially when I do not know what the actual issue was.I have triple checked control surface movement deflection amount and direction as per the manual. I moved the ailerons control rod to the inner hole on the ailerons servo horns per Wess's recommendation in the video. The gyro seems to be working in the correct directions, though it only seems to work on the tailerons for me. I barely see any movement at all on the wing ailerons (even when in the original control horn position).The weather didn't seem bad for the maiden flight, but my next flight on a different aircraft about 10 minutes later, the weather, specifically the wind, started to get pretty gnarly. The windsock would change direction multiple times in a single flight and even this other airplane bounced around up in the sky. There's a chance that, perhaps, the weather was worse than I expected up a high when I flew the f-14. But, I'm not inexperienced flying in challenging weather and it took every ounce of my skill to get the F14 down in one piece.At this point, I'm legit scared to fly again. This plane costs a small fortune and I barely got it back home and there are no obvious issues to squash. If there were, I could address them and feel confident in the next flight. But as is, I have no idea what I need to change or do to make the next flight not be so nerve-racking.

Freewing F-14 Tomcat: First Flight After Upgrading the Power System Sukos Hobbies 2024-01-01 | I finally ditched the old outrunner motors that came in my F-14 and put in the new 3658-2150Kv 80mm inrunner motor and upgraded ESCs. The increased power is very nice. The plane now flies like I feel it always should have.
FlyFans Saab JAS-39 Gripen 70mm EDF Maiden Flight Sukos Hobbies 2023-12-23 | I recently bought this plane from Banana Hobby during a sale. I previously owned the Freewing 80mm Gripen but sold it. I love the looks of the Gripen, but the Freewing version just didn't do much for me. I'm hoping that the smaller size of this model makes it more enjoyable.Maiden flight went great. Almost zero trim and she flew as expected. The CG was right behind the forward wing screws. I felt it could've used a bit more speed and thrust. I found myself flying the plane at 70% throttle most of the flight, where most planes I prefer around 50 or 60%. All-in-all, a decent model for the price.

Mine was used from a member on here and required a lot of work fixing the wing sweep mechanism.The plane took off great and barely required any trim with wings out. CG is about where the manual specified. The plane took a long time to lift off the runway. I was expecting a bit more power on take off, but it is what it is. I tried taking off with half flaps (same flap settings that Jeremy and the manual describe as "maximum" flaps) and the plane lifted off with about 1/3 less distance, nice and smooth.Speaking of flaps; I ignored the BH Setup video and set my full flaps at 100% throw and noticed NO issue with this at all. I'm not sure what the "aileron washout" mentioned in the BH setup video is about, but I didn't notice it. I did need a lot of elevator trim to prevent the plane from nosing down when the flaps were deployed. This was also the case at half (stock) flaps too. I don't have my transmitter in front of me, so I can't give specific numbers, but at 100% flaps, I think I have -25 trim (Spektrum) of elevator to keep the nose from dropping. The full flaps did help reduce approach speed, which at my small field was very welcome.On the topic of the small field, this plane sure eats up space fast. I have flown the FW F-14 and Mig29 at this field and it felt manageable, but this B1 made it feel extremely cramped, and that's with the wings out. With the wings back, it was sweat-inducing. The plane needed significant elevator trim to fly neutral with wings swept. A LOT of trim. Literally I ran out of trim (-100) trying to get this thing flying straight with wings swept. Fortunately, I am bypassing the gyro and had a lot of elevator throw (as much as was physically possible before the elevator hits the servo). This amount of elevator was sufficient for flying, but it still made making turns at my field REALLY stressful. Unfortunately, since my plane was used, it had some warping in the wing that causes it to roll when the wings sweep. So I had to trim this out too. I eventually got it setup so that it flew more-or-less straight and level with the wings swept. But whenever I transition between the two settings the plane bucks or dives pretty bad because the trim settings (assigned to flight modes) take effect instantly, but the wing sweep takes 5 seconds or so. My F-14 does this too, but the trim change isn't as drastic, so the shift isn't too bad. But on this model it's pretty obvious and you HAVE to be prepared for it. I had a few more flights and got the plane more and more dialed in. I only swept the wings a handful of times because (truth be told), it was just too stressful flying it with wings swept at my field for more than a circuit or two. On my last flight, I noticed the plane was doing a bit of an uncommanded roll. I also thought I saw one of the wings maybe not in-line with the other, so I brought her in and sure enough, the port wing was loose. It wasn't the bracket that broke (I already installed the reinforcement plates before flying), but the screw holding the wing pivot mechanism to the plane's frame came out. This is because my model is used and had some serious issues with wing bowing in its past life. So, I need to get back in there and make sure I secure the pivot appropriately (again). I'll probably use a slightly longer screw this time so it can "bite" into the frame better and stay in place.Overall I think this is a very unique model, but I am not sure it's a good fit for my field. It may be a bit too large and cumbersome for me to enjoy flying. I really REALLY like the B-1 as an aircraft, so it really bums me out that I have to consider letting her go because of my field limitations, but it is what it is. However, I won't pass final judgement just yet. I'll take her out some more and see if perhaps my opinion changes.
Big Honkin FMS A-10 Warthog (twin 70mm EDF) Maiden Flight Sukos Hobbies 2023-08-23 | I bought this plane from a fellow club member. It's the FMS A-10 Warthog with twin 70mm EDFs. It had a couple rough moments, but no serious crashes.Since it's now mine, I did the standard pre-check stuff on the plane. Making sure connections were good, critical components were snug and secure and all the other pre-flight inspections, making sure everything met my expectations.The plane weighs a LOT for it's size, but people on RCG told me that's how it is and I should just go out and fly it. So....I did.

When my daughters were born, taking care of myself took back seat to simply surviving. While things today are far from "normal", my health has gotten to a point where I can no longer ignore the necessity to lose a few pounds.For those of you who have followed me for a while now, you know that I used to play quite a lot of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). In fact, some of the earliest videos on this channel are of my DDR activity. During my 20's and early 30's, this sport/game/activity was a huge part of my life. I met many good friends through playing the game in arcades and was even good enough to compete in tournaments at the state level. However, over the last 5 years, I have played less and less due to the time commitment my daughters required. Well, I am making a concerted effort to "get back into it".I am not foolish enough to think I'll be able to play 3+ times a week like I did 15 years ago. But, I am hoping to at least play once a week at a minimum. I have friends who I used to regularly play DDR with that have asked me to do some live streams of my gaming sessions so they can "feel like they're there". And so, I have been doing this and sharing these streams with them privately. During these streams, I will sometimes get a remarkable achievement of some kind and will "save the highlight". In an effort to keep myself motivated, I have taken some of these highlights and created short videos of them to post on this channel. For those of you who have recently subscribed for the trains or RC plane videos, those will definitely continue to come out as usual. I'm just going to fill the gaps in-between these releases with some DDR content too.Even if these videos aren't your thing, that's totally fine. It was fun, but more work than I thought to get things working properly. My little 3D printed sweeper didn't handle anything more than 2" of snow, so I had to remove the rest by hand.
