Abstract: In Timor-Leste, small-scale fisheries are vital for livelihoods and food security, yet managing these systems sustainably is a complex challenge due to data scarcity. Peskas (timor.peskas.org ), bridges this gap by harnessing real-time data for impactful decision-making. Developed by WorldFish in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), Peskas stands out as an example of 'Shiny For Good'—utilizing open-source technology to address critical social and environmental issues.
The session will unveil the narrative behind Peskas, how it started, the technologies deployed, and its impact. The dashboard's efficiency lies in its ability to track fishing activities, catalogue the number and types of fish caught, the overall nutritional yields of the fishery and present this data to fisheries officers, researchers, and stakeholders. With 359 solar-powered tracking devices installed on boats and data collectors at 30 landing sites, the application offers a novel view of marine resource utilization.
The session will explore the architecture of the Peskas Shiny application, highlighting its core components and functionalities. It will showcase the synergistic use of R frameworks and packages, alongside other open-source technologies, which work in concert to streamline data workflows and enhance visual analytics. Participants will receive an in-depth understanding of the intricacies involved in crafting a scalable, open-source Shiny application specifically adapted to local challenges. The presentation will elucidate the development practicalities, offering insights that can inform similar conservation and sustainability projects worldwide.
