The wait is finally over and Dark Pals has officially launched its first chapter. This is a game that is developed by fellow Dutch creators and in collaboration with various YouTubers. The genre is Mascot Horror, but you can see that the developers have done their homework and picked the ingredients that make games like this work.
We enter a giant amusement park where guests get indoctrinated. Armed with a cute, little squid toy we have to solve puzzles and deal with various mascots. The animation for the mascots is outstanding and the overall presentation absolutely stellar. The music is varied and fitting for the tone. From catchy songs with actual lyrics to mysterious melodies during the quiet sections.
Most importantly what this game gets right is that none of the puzzle sections are too frustrating and the same goes for the chase sequences. I honestly think that Dark Pals has the BEST first chapter out of any Mascot Horror game out there.
I do hope that they will not make this a franchise where we will simply be heading from floor to floor, but actually also introduce a proper storyline to flesh out the lore, characters and plot. I know that some of the YouTubers who work on this are big fans of story driven games, so I think we will be good on that front. I cannot wait to see what lies inside the second floor!
