Philadelphia Phillies, WTAF Promo Compilation, 1984-1986 Hugo Faces 2022-10-26 | With the Phillies headed to the World Series, I thought I'd put together a few clips from my collection. The team was seen on Philadelphia's channel 29, then called WTAF. These promos, contest commercials, and station identifications were taken from recordings made in 1984, '85, and '86, but it begins with a 1983 ID featuring the Phillie Phanatic, the mascot created in the late 70's by marketing company Harrison/Erickson (promoting games with the Houston Astros). The sources are over-the-air broadcasts on nearly forty-year-old VHS cassettes, so video and audio quality vary throughout.Mike Schmidt is seen in an ad for Ranch Hope for Boys (a counseling service in Alloway, New Jersey). Other players and managers seen include Von Hayes, Ozzie Virgil, Larry Anderson, Rich Ashburn, Steve Jeltz (doing his bit for the March of Dimes' Walk America), Dallas Green (although he was with the Cubs at the time), Glenn Wilson, Kevin Gross, and Juan Samuel. Mousetrap Game (Christmas, 1964 Home Movie) Hugo Faces 2022-10-19 | Consider this video an early Christmas gift--or a super-late one, since it shows an assembled game of Mousetrap (released the previous year) being demonstrated after it was received by one of my siblings on Christmas 1964. Dad took a penalty on the first go-round, but then changed angle and caught the whole thing in one take! I slowed the movie down a pinch and added the projector sound.Are you supposed to yell "Mousetrap!" when the cage falls? Well, go ahead and do it, just to be on the safe side. Yes, both times, loud.
Thanksgiving 1958, and What the Heck Was on That Tee-Vee? Hugo Faces 2022-10-19 | The date was Thursday, November 27th, 1958, which was Thanksgiving. The scene we witness is my family's living room (but this was eleven years or so before I came along), with kids gathered on the floor, watching a good-sized B&W set. (I don't think color sets were common at this time--at least not enough for my family to have one.) For just a few seconds, something is visible on the screen to the right side, but it's hard to make out. To me, it looks like a T. Rex roaring, before it's obscured by something dark which comes from the right. NBC/WNBC Bits, October 1985 Hugo Faces 2022-10-02 | From two nights of NBC's "The Long Hot Summer" mini-series, which aired October 6-7, 1985, here are some bits and pieces as broadcast on New York City's WNBC channel 4.First is a "sponsored in part by" VO for MONY Financial Services, followed by a commercial for Black & Decker's automatic shut-off iron. I usually try to concentrate on local ads in this type of upload, but this one features the Great Jones Street Firehouse (also known as Engine Company 33 and Ladder Company 9), which lost ten of its 14 personnel on 9/11.Another MONY spot riffs on the zany fast-food ads of the day. Some NBC bumps (including a title card) bookend a WNBC News4 tease with Rolonda Watts. WNEW, Channel 5 Movie Club Bits, January 1985 Hugo Faces 2022-09-25 | Here are bits and pieces taken from a WNEW (New York City's channel 5) "Channel 5 Movie Club" airing of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly at 11pm on January 19th, 1985 (the day before Super Bowl XIX). Unfortunately the beginning and end were cut off.First we hear announcer Tom Gregory say the movie "returns after these messages." Then there's a great host segment with Eli Wallach, the "Ugly" of the title. He tells a funny story about Sergio Leone striking himself in "a vital area" while directing Wallach. The same bump follows.The upcoming C5MC films are announced via vertical crawl, namely All the Fine Young Cannibals, M*A*S*H ("First uncut New York showing with limited commercial interruptions"), and Love and Bullets. Instructions for becoming a club member are read.There are familiar actors in the ad for the New York Post's "Golden Scratch" game, maybe someone can tell me who they are. I found that the identical ad is on YouTube already, but buried in a long block of commercials and sponsored by Purina, with no mention of the ASPCA. The ad has a lonely old fella heading to his local Humane Society to pick up another lonely old fella to be his new pal. Brighton Beach Memoirs Commercial, Broadway (Neil Simon Theatre) Hugo Faces 2022-09-25 | Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" had been on Broadway for almost two years when this commercial for it aired in January of 1985, so I'm not sure how old the ad is. (It follows a Late Movie bump from WABC, New York City's channel 7.) The play was running at what was formerly the Alvin Theatre, renamed for Simon in 1983. The commercial features newsreel-type scenes of the events of 1937, with the reviews of critics seen as spinning newspaper headlines. Interestingly, the cast (featuring Matthew Broderick) is only seen at the end, framed in the familiar Polaroid instant photo shape. This may be referencing the fact that Polaroid was founded in 1937, but that particular style of photograph would not appear until decades later.No rights held or implied. S.M. Rose Chevrolet Commercials, Bronx NY, 1985 Hugo Faces 2022-09-24 | Sam M. Rose opened his Chevy dealership in the Bronx in 1956, and appeared in his own ads for years. Here are two that look like they could be from the seventies mostly, but with new scenes and elements added (such as the "this week" sales chyron). These were recorded from WABC 7 in January of 1985. WPIX Stuff: Editorial (Richard N. Hughes), Superfriends Open, 1985 Hugo Faces 2022-09-24 | Here are some WPIX (New York City's channel 11) clips I've put together from the end of a 12:30 Star Movie showing of Stage Struck, which I believe aired in January of 1985. (There is a 1984 copyright on the editorial, but I think that may have been when it was recorded, as the topic refers to events that occurred in December.) WNYW Movie 5 Bits, June 1986 Hugo Faces 2022-09-04 | Here are some bits taken from a WNYW (New York City's channel 5) afternoon movie, I believe from Sunday, June 8th, 1986. This was three months after the station changed their call letters from WNEW (as they'd been since 1958) to denote their becoming the Fox flagship affiliate.First up is a Goodwill Games promo spotlighting Carl Lewis, then the refurbished "Movie 5" open, and just a second of 1980 TV movie "The Ordeal of Dr. Mudd." Judd Hirsch is seen next, touting the whole milk goodness of Swiss Miss Pudding. The first of several Caldor commercials comes before a movie bump.Next is a promo for "McMillan," Monday's 8:30 movie, then Brooke Shields works out for Jack LaLanne Fitness Centers. Another movie promo follows, for "Claudine" that evening. Another bump, and a promo for a "Columbo" movie with Laurence Harvey. Grand Union promotes their natural beef with a spiel from rancher Mel Coleman of Coleman Natural Foods. Men's clothier NBO offers suggestions for Father's Day, which was coming up in a week. An unbilled Alex Karras tells parents that a Playskool "Timex Teach Me Watch" is a neat gift for kids, with its digital/analog face. There's a brief glitch (mine, not WNYW's) and then another Caldor spot, featuring Lee Jeans. A promo for that night's special "Footsteps of Giants," about the American space program, is next. William B. Williams is then heard for Genovese Drug Stores, with more ideas for dad.The next promo is for a teen-oriented special I can't find anywhere, not even a reference. "Buchanan H.S." looks like it may be Canadian. I know the station was airing other Canada-produced content, plus it just looks pretty darn Canadian. A Rockbottom ad is next, better-produced than their previous commercials. (Interestingly, a different Rockbottom ad was in my last WOR upload from that same month, so not only were they upping their production game, they were advertising on multiple stations.) The chain was bought by Duane Reade twelve years later.The last Caldor ad goes into a promo for a public interest special about traffic issues in the tri-state area, as part of the WNYW/New York Daily News "Searching for Solutions" campaign. Newsman Jim Ryan handles the announcing. WOR Bits, Million Dollar Movie (Sara Lee Kessler), June 1986 Hugo Faces 2022-08-29 | Here are some bits taken from WOR, Secaucus New Jersey's channel 9, serving the New York City metro area. They come from the breaks during a Million Dollar Movie showing of "Papillon" on Monday, June 9th, 1986.First is a MDM bump (the later, 80's kind), followed by Sara Lee Kessler delivering a News 9: Update, mentioning the Rogers Commission Report (addressing the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster) and Kurt Waldheim becoming president of Austria. There's a great World Trade Center shot in there too. Announcer Ted Mallie reads over a MDM slide, and next is a once-familiar ad for the Trump Castle Hotel and Casino. Another bump, and then a brief spot for Monmouth Park racing, a good way to end a day at the Jersey shore. The movie returned with a title chyron superimposed over it.Another bump and the same return slide (oops), then ads for Rockbottom and WNSR, soft rock 105FM (which had been WRFM, for almost thirty years). Sara returns with Tom Dunn to tell us what we saw on the earlier newscast and to tease what we would see on the next night's late edition, after the Mets game. A MDM title bump goes to a short WMCA Radio 570 ("We Talk New York") promo for the afternoon drive-time show with Roy Fox. Roy's show, known as "The Fox's Den," lasted until the following May. Its Great to be a Long Islander, Marshalls Commercials, 1986 Hugo Faces 2022-08-27 | From the summer of 1986, here are two segments titled "It's Great to Be a Long Islander," which aired during a late movie on WABC (New York City's channel 7). Both segments are sponsored by the department store Marshall's, with the latter being an out-and-out commercial (although there is a gratuitous reference to "Long Island fashion"). The first part, however, literally sings he praises of the Island, as a vocalist (who sounds a little like David Cross) enthuses, "Long Island is great in so many ways!" The spoken voiceover touts LI's agriculture--namely the potatoes, ducklings, and vineyards. WLIW 21 (Music, Matinee at the Bijou Theme and Intro), 1980 - Audio Only Hugo Faces 2022-08-07 | This is an audio-only clip, taken from a tape I made when I was in the sixth grade. I had found a cassette on the floor of the school bus as I was headed home on a Friday afternoon. It had a folk guitar class recorded on it, and my pal Jeff and I decided we should use it to make our own show. So, on Saturday, December 6th, 1980, he slept over and we borrowed my uncle's tape recorder. When we weren't coming up with our own goofy skits, we would just record stuff off the TV (my family wouldn't have a VCR until about four years later).We were both fans of the new PBS show "Matinee at the Bijou," which was airing that night on our local PBS station, WLIW 21. Before the show started, I put the microphone up to the television speaker to catch some of the interstitial music they would sometimes play, accompanied by a station ID slide. You can hear us goofing around during it, and at times randomly shutting off the recording and turning it back on again.After about a minute of that, the VO "From KMTF, Fresno" is heard. (That was the PBS affiliate in that city, channel 18.) The funding message is next, followed by the "MatB" theme song. Sung by Rudy Vallee, there are several videos to be found of it on YT, but this one includes the original host intro, delivered by Scott DeVenney, who you hear arriving by cab to an old moviehouse. WNEW 5 Ads, Promos, PSAs, March 1985 Hugo Faces 2022-03-13 | Here are some clips taken from a "Hollywood's Finest" movie on WNEW, New York City's channel 5, airing late Friday, March 29th, 1985 (the weekend of Palm Sunday, one week prior to Easter Sunday).First up is a TV Guide ad for that week's edition, March 30-April 5, with the NBC miniseries A.D. on the cover.A short WNEW promo for weeknight Kojak episodes beginning Monday is next.Ceasar's Bay Bazaar in Brooklyn had people on the street asking "What's the Big Deal?"That week's "Movie Greats" showing--Saturdays at 8pm--was The Conspirators (which I have in my collection).
