MrOldMajor“Nostalgia for China” (ស្រណោះប្រទេសចិន; also known as “Missing China”) is a song written, composed and performed by the late king of Cambodia, Prince Norodom Sihanouk (31.10.1922 – 15.10.2012).
In February 1956, Sihanouk, who had been elected Prime Minister of Cambodia less than a year before, visited China for the first time. At the time, the two countries had not yet established diplomatic relations. Cambodia, which had just recently gained independence, was resilient against US pressure, announcing at the Bandung Conference its policy of national independence, neutrality and non-alignment. Sihanouk received a warm reception in China. On behalf of the Chinese government, Premier Zhou Enlai committed to provide unconditional economic and technical assistance to Cambodia.
Two years later, China and Cambodia formally established relations.
In September 1965, Sihanouk visited China once more with his wife. Accompanied by Premier Zhou and Vice Premier Chen Yi, they toured the Chinese landscape. The beautiful scenery of China and the warm reception he received from the people inspired Sihanouk to write the song, “Nostalgia for China”, in expression of his gratitude to the country.
In March 1970, a US-backed coup deposed the Cambodian government and forced Sihanouk into exile. China nevertheless offered Sihanouk refuge in Beijing, where he founded the Cambodian government-in-exile. When Sihanouk offered to repay China for sponsoring the resistance, Mao Zedong replied: “We are not arms dealers.”
Sihanouk later proclaimed at a press conference that “China does not export tanks and soldiers, but dignity and mutual-respect.”
On May 20 of the same year, Sihanouk spoke at the mass rally at Tiananmen Square in support of the people’s resistance movements in Asia, Africa, and Latin America against foreign aggression.

[MN] ᠤᠮᠠᠷᠠᠳᠤ ᠬᠢᠯᠢ ᠶᠢᠨ ᠤᠶᠠᠩᠭᠠᠲᠤ ᠳᠠᠭᠤᠤ [Умард хилийн уянгат дуу / 北疆讚歌] (1976)MrOldMajor2021-09-08 | “Pæan of the Northern Frontier” (MN: ᠤᠮᠠᠷᠠᠳᠤ ᠬᠢᠯᠢ ᠶᠢᠨ ᠤᠶᠠᠩᠭᠠᠲᠤ ᠳᠠᠭᠤᠤ / Умард хилийн уянгат дуу / Umard hiliin uyangat duu; CN: 北疆讚歌 / Běijiāng zàn’gē), an ode of praise from Inner Mongolia.
In his later years, Mao Zedong remained deferent to his mortality. On many occasions, he spoke casually of the natural laws of life and death. He said to his staff: “All people will eventually die. Mao Zedong is a person, so Mao Zedong too will die."
He also said: “When I die, you can throw a celebration party. You will dress nicely, brightly in red or floral clothes, and attend the party with joy and glee, and proudly step up to the stage to speak. You can say: ‘Today we hold a victorious conference. Mao Zedong has died. Let us all celebrate the triumph of the dialectic.’ If, from Confucius to the present, people do not die, the earth will no longer have any room left.”
Mao also explained his dialectical materialist conception of life and death. He said to his staff: “When I lived, I ate a lot of fish. After I die, I shall be cremated, and my ashes scattered into the Yangtze River to feed the fish. You can say to the fish: ‘Oh fish, Mao Zedong has come to repay you. He has eaten you when he lived, and now you shall eat him. Eat, and fatten up, so that you can better serve the people.’ Such is the law of conservation.”

“The Long March Medley” is a musical epic originally written by Xiao Hua in 1965 as a series of twelve poems to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the victory of the Long March. Xiao Hua was a participant in the Long March, and ten of his poems were adapted by the composers Chen Geng, Sheng Mao, Tang He and Yu Qiu into a musical.
After a successful debut performance by the PLA Beijing Unit Political Department Propaganda Troupe on 1 August 1965, the group accompanied Zhou Enlai on his diplomatic visits to Albania and Romania. They went on to tour in the Soviet Union, Japan and thirty other countries, becoming one of the first Chinese cultural ambassadors.
This version of the musical, arguably the most iconic, was filmed between late 1975 and March 1976, stopping briefly in January 1976 to mourn to passing of Zhou Enlai.

“Hawthorn Tree” (Chinese: 山楂樹; Shānzhāshù)―originally the “Ural Rowan Tree” (Russian: Уральская рябинушка; Uralskaya ryubinushka)―was a first Soviet-era love song written by Mikhail Pilinenko and composed by Evgeny Rodygin in 1953. The song describes a love triangle, wherein a girl, facing two suitors, approaches the hawthorn tree for help.
Together with a large number of Soviet songs, it was introduced to China in the 1950s, where it became immensely popular.

“On the Taihang Mountains” (Chinese: 在太行山上; Zài Tàihángshān shàng) is a WWII Chinese war song written by Gui Taosheng and Xian Xinghai. It was first performed in July 1938 at a musical in Wuhan to commemorate the first anniversary of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937–45). It subsequently spread through the ranks of the Eighth Route Army and the liberated zones. Zhu De, Commander-in-Chief of the Eighth Route Army, took a personal liking to the song and frequently sang it himself.
The Taihang Mountains is a mountain range across the Shanxi, Henan and Hebei Provinces. The song honours the soldiers and guerrilla fighters who laid down their lives resisting the Japanese invasion into Shanxi Province in the early stages of the war. Following the Long March (1934–35), the Red Army under the leadership of Mao Zedong and Zhu De relocated to Yan’an, Shaanxi Province. Yan Xishan, warlord of the neighbouring Shanxi Province, had resisted urges from Chiang Kai-shek to retreat southward, choosing instead to stand his ground. Yet he knew he could not face the Japanese military juggernaut alone, and enlisted the help of the Chinese Communists.
From Yan’an, the Red Army (reorganised as the Eighth Route Army following the formation of the Nationalist–Communist United Front) scored numerous decisive victories against the Japanese, namely the Battle of Pingxingguan and the Hundred Regiments Offensive. The Chinese Communists were also able to defend the revolutionary bases, giving rise to a period of relative security in the Liberated Zones.

Zhang Zhenfu (1940—2000) was a famous Chinese folk music singer, actor of the Beijing Military Region Comrades’ Song and Dance Troupe, and a national first-class actor in China.
Zhang Zhenfu was born in Tianjin, China in 1940. He joined the army in 1959 and became a scout of an artillery regiment in the Beijing Military Region. Later he entered the military cultural troupe and became a singer. In the 1970s, Zhang Zhenfu and Geng Lianfeng (dubbed the “best duet in China”) co-sung such hits as “A New Look of the Motherland”, “Chairman Mao Sends People Hither”, “Ovoo Meeting”.
In late 1996, Zhang Zhenfu began to develop symptoms of lung cancer. However, in dedication to his craft, he gave up surgery and opted instead for passive treatment. In the following years, Zhang Zhenfu performed hundreds of times, including the notable 1998 CCTV Spring Festival Gala performance with Geng Lianfeng — “A New Look of the Motherland”. In 2000, Zhang Zhenfu succumbed at the age of 60 to complications arising from cancer.

The Red Detachment of Women (紅色娘子軍; Hóngsè niángzǐjūn) is a Chinese ballet that premiered in 1964. It is considered one of the eight model operas that dominated the national stage during the Cultural Revolution.
It combines the techniques of Western ballet with the expression of Chinese folk dance, blending Chinese and Western culture in the field of ballet art.
The story takes place in China’s Hainan Island in the 1930s. The musical recalls the tale Qionghua, a maid who escaped from the employ of the brutal landlord Nanbatian. With the aid of Hong Changqing, a Red Army soldier, she stands up for herself and gradually transforms from a vulnerable damsel to an empowered warrior for communism.
The Komsomol Song (Russian: Комсомольская; Komsomolskaya), known in China as the “Song of the Communist Youth League” (Chinese: 共青團員之歌; Gòngqīngtuányuán zhī gē), was written in 1947 for the Soviet WWII commemorative film “Starting Point”. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the official song of the USSR’s All-Union Leninist Young Communist League (Komsomol).
The song is perhaps even more popular in China than in Russia (or the USSR for that matter). It is a staple in the Chinese Communist Youth League’s songbook, and is frequently featured in patriotic performances and productions.
