Christmas Woodland Teepee Camp with BUDGET TBMPOY Outdoor Clothing, Venison Goulash & Craft Ales MCM Outdoors 2022-11-29 | Christmas Woodland Teepee Camp with BUDGET TBMPOY Outdoor Clothing, Venison Goulash & Craft AlesI head out for our annual festive camp using some budget friendly outdoor clothing by TBMPOY. We're all struggling with the cost of living, so I wanted to try some outdoor clothing which caters for every budget. I camp in the brilliant Northgaze chimney tent by One Tigris and used their mesh inner tent too - what a brilliant bit of kit for woodland camping, a real home from home. We cook up some lovely venison goulash using a wood burning stove and enjoy some great company around the camp fire, taking in the atmosphere of the winter woodland; even Father Christmas paid a visit. Some fine craft beers, german lager and single malt make an appearance, for what was a very enjoyable camp with a top bunch of outdoor enthusiasts. UK Mountain Tarn Wild Camping with Andy Wardle in STRONG WINDS & 4 Season Tents MCM Outdoors 2022-11-15 | UK Mountain Tarn Wild Camping with Andy Wardle in STRONG WINDS & 4 Season Tents I team up with Andy Wardle for a collaboration wild camp. We head to the Western Fells of the Lake District National park to an idyllic mountain tarn. A few (hundred) beers in hand, we hike to the summit with ridiculously heavy packs and find a place to pitch the tents. Lots of rain over the last few days meant suitable pitches were few and far between. A group advised us there were no suitable places to put the tents, but experience prevailed and we soon found the only suitable pitch and had the spot all to ourselves. Andy camped in the Hilleberg Soulo Black Label and I used the Tarptent Scarp 1. The winds were wild and gusting throughout the night but the tents are designed to withstand much worse conditions, so proved to be the trusty shelters that they're renowned for. We swapped tales of the outdoors, life and shared many beers together. Andy also enjoyed the opportunity to answer some questions which some viewers had kindly submitted, so thanks for that. Lake District Wild Camp with Muddy Bootlaces, Mullion Vagrant & JRB Ascent - 2 Days in the Mountains MCM Outdoors 2022-10-26 | Lake District Wild Camp with Muddy Bootlaces, Mullion Vagrant & JRB Ascent - 2 Days in the MountainsI head to the mountains of the Lake District National Park with some good friends and fellow outdoor enthusiasts from the 'Valley & Peak Family'. I meet up with Beca from Muddy Bootlaces, Mark 'Mullion Vagrant' and Josh from 'JRB Ascent'. We head up to the stunning location of Angletarn Pikes and find a pitch by the tarn itself, which is a stunning body of water containing an island and peninsula which (if you're lucky), you can grab all to yourself. We enjoy some top laughs and soak up the stunning Lake District scenery, chatting and getting to know each other and what we each love about our great outdoors.The weather was testing, with 35mph plus winds, torrential rain at times and our different tents showed just what they can do. I will list the shelters we all used below, along with some of our other outdoor equipment. Day two saw us wake to a grey but nonetheless stunning morning and we hiked back toward Place Fell and south along a wooded valley back to the tiny village of Hartsop. A mishap on the Kirkstone Pass saw our intended plans curtailed and we had to think on our feet and quickly deal with what was becoming a dangerous situation. We headed back to the warmth and shelter of the Brotherswater Inn and secured a pitch at this stunning campsite. I changed tents to the mighty Fjallraven Keb Endurance 3 and we warmed up by the fire, swapped tales of the outdoors and later enjoyed a lovely evening meal together. Hiking and Wild Camp in the Glyderau of the Snowdonia National Park in the Terra Nova Compact AS 2 MCM Outdoors 2022-10-04 | Hiking and Wild Camp in the Glyderau of the Snowdonia National Park in the Terra Nova Compact AS 2I head back to a haunt of my youth, the Snowdonia National Park and the mountains of the Glyderau (a Welsh plural form, also known in English as the Glyders). The name derives from the highest peaks in the range, Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach. According to Sir Ifor Williams, the word "Glyder" derives from the Welsh word "Cludair", meaning a heap of stones.Gale force winds on the summits made for an arduous ascent to Bwlch Tryfan, but the views across the Ogwen Valley were mesmerising. We scrambled our way across the vast, rocky plateau of the Glyderau, including the Castle of the Wind (Castell Y Gwynt) which was tricky with a wild camping pack on. After completing both summits, we found a spot late on in the day, the light was fading and the winds were not letting up. A gruelling first test for the Terra Nova Laser Compact AS 2 - it performed admirably and I look forward to many more camps in this tent. Fine craft beer, good food and great company made for an atmospheric wild camp and one that I will always remember. A poignant look back at the stomping ground of my youth, with many, many happy memories here. Wild Camping in the Lake DistrictI head to the mountains of the Lake District National Park to test out a new tent; the Naturehike "Cloud Peak 2". Some of my friends have this tent and I've never had the opportunity to try one until recently. I met up with my good friends, Ant, Rick and Leon (links to their channels below) and we had a pre-hike pint (or two) in the infamous Kirkstone Pass Inn. We scrambled up to the pitch location carrying heavy packs and soon found a nice spot to pitch, affording fantastic views of Windermere and south to Morecambe Bay and the Lancashire coastline. The weather began to turn and I was glad I had brought along my warm gear - autumn is definitely on its way. The winds picked up and the tent was buffeted by some strong gusts throughout the night and into the next morning, The Cloud Peak 2 performed admirably and I was impressed by the 'liveable' space within the tent - I tweaked a few things including wrapping the guy lines around the poles - and the top hat elastic, and I had a drum tight pitch in no time. A brilliant evening, with good friends, nice food and drink and more top memories made in our great outdoors. I hike up a brutal ascent with a rucksack that weighed almost 20KG (which was a nightmare but good exercise). We find a spot on a steep ridge and pitch the tents to give us great views of the stunning valley below. My tent was the Nordisk "Halland" 2LW which denotes the 'light weight' variant which is made from Silnylon material - weighing in at an astounding 1.5KG. A fantastic piece of outdoor equipment with a stunning colour to match. I captured some nice drone footage of the area including low level cloud spilling over the fell tops. Sadly, some bad weather set in; with gusting winds and rain throughout the night - meaning that Phil and I spent a lot of time tent bound - but when you have a tent like the Halland, it's a very pleasant experience! A gruelling ascent in 31 degree heat with full pack, it was certainly a welcome feeling to reach the summit and then find my camp spot for the night; in this case - a small ledge perched 1868ft high. Just enough room to pitch the Scarp 1 and enjoy a fantastic evening on the fells. The Perseids meteor shower is currently showing and it was really nice to sit and watch them from the vestibule. 4K drone footage, a few craft beers and of course some tales from the tent feature in this video and I hope you enjoy it. Camping in a hammock by the Sea - with craft beers and ambient soundtrack MCM Outdoors 2022-07-02 | Camping in a hammock by the Sea - with craft beers and ambient soundtrackI head to the coast with some new hammock equipment to test out made by 'Ticket to The Moon'. Bad weather rolls in with squally showers blowing in across the Irish Sea. I set up the hammock in a spot which afforded me expansive views across the coastline and out to sea which was extremely relaxing and peaceful. The weather took a turn for the worse overnight, however the Moon Tarp kept me nice and dry! Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for my camera which fell over through the night and landed outside the protection of the tarp - the camera and lens are likely damaged beyond repair which is pretty devastating as I cannot replace them at this time. I head out in a budget tent - the Naturehike "Cloud Up 1" following an interactive poll on Instagram where my followers chose this tent. The fog and mist close in and soon, I am tent bound and sheltering from the inclement weather. My friend Ant has the luxury and comfort of the Sierra Designs "Meteor 2" and had a great night in this fantastic tent. Leon slept in the OEX Jackal 3 and had a very comfortable night. We tried some nice craft beers and enjoyed an evening meal together before the bad weather hit. The next morning was thankfully much better, with a nice sunrise and epic skies. Solo Camping in the Tarptent Scarp 1 on the Spooky Moors in Strong Winds MCM Outdoors 2022-06-05 | Solo Camping in the Tarptent Scarp 1 on the Spooky Moors in Strong WindsI head out to the spooky and atmospheric moors near Pendle Hill using the Tarptent Scarp 1. The winds were strong all day, gusting over 40mph with no let up at all! Such was the strength of the wind that I pitched slightly lower down than my intended location, using a stone wall for some shelter. I cook up a nice meal from scratch, using a fantastic frying pan from Fire Maple. I also try out some new beers for something a bit different! As the day drew to a close, I was treated to a spectacular sunset, with the last of the light illuminating some stunning lenticular clouds which hung on in the late spring skies. A fantastic adventure, the tent performed very well and this was without the crossover poles. In my latest adventure, I head out to a moorland summit in the MSR Elixir 2 tent which was loaned to me by Valley & Peak. In this short episode I hike a stunning ridge walk up Catbells, Maiden Moor and finally High Spy, before dropping back down to the valley and hiking north back to the car. This is a stunning route and on a day such as this, the views are fantastic. It had snowed heavily overnight so I brought winter gear, however it wasn't required due to rapid thaw - always best to be prepared. The day was challenging, with a fairly long route and lots of ascent and descent throughout the day. To end, I paid a visit to 'Surprise View' which was lovely watching the close of day and cloud roll in over the mountains. Wild Camp With Budget Friendly Gear & Meal in tents and hammocks + DD XL Superlight Pyrmaid Tent MCM Outdoors 2022-03-28 | Wild Camp With Budget Friendly Gear & Meal in tents and hammocks + DD XL Superlight Pyrmaid TentI head out to the wilderness with some good friends to enjoy a wild camp. In this video, there are some budget friendly pieces of gear used, which in the current climate is important to us all. I ditch the gas stove and instead, use a tiny Bushcraft Essentials 'Bushcraft Ultralight' stove in conjunction with a Trangia burner - my evening meal was inspired by 'Stripey Hat Guy' (check out his channel) and cost me less than £2 in total. Some of the group opted for hammocks, some were ground dwelling under tarps and I opted for the combination of DD Superlight XL Pyramid Tent in conjunction with their Superlight Solo Mesh Inner - a fantastic pyramid shelter with a very generous vestibule and pitches quickly with a single trekking pole. Ground dwelling under a simple tarp is versatile and budget friendly - enabling you to sleep outdoors at low cost. We enjoyed nice food and drinks around the campfire (*it has been in place here for decades) and had great laugh together - some fantastic memories made. KEEN NXIS EVO Hiking Boot Review after 2+ months use in the Great Outdoors MCM Outdoors 2022-03-10 | KEEN NXIS EVO Hiking Boot Review after 2+ months use in the Great OutdoorsI have been testing out the NXIS Evo by Keen for just over 2 months now. I have used them in a variety of conditions in the UK hills and mountains, including snow and ice, mud and also on drier terrain. I have used them for wild camping, hiking and scrambling. I find these boots to fit somewhere between a trail running shoe and full on hiking boot - these are much lighter and comfier than my other leather and much heavier hiking boots. I can confirm the KEEN dry waterproof membrane works, having crossed numerous streams and bogs wearing them. The heel lock system prevents slipping and therefore reduces the risk of blisters. The toes are protected by a generous rubber rand. 4mm multidirectional lugs on the sole afford grip in a variety of conditions. In short, these are a lightweight mid-hiking boot which allow you to move fast and light - I look forward to many more adventures in my KEEN Evo.Whilst I was sent these to test out by KEEN, I am free to provide my honest feedback and have only done so after extensive testing and 'real world' use. The weather was very windy throughout the entire camp and the tent held up very well. I camped at a very spooky and atmospheric spot, which took on an eerie feel when the light was lost. Enjoy the sounds of nature, in this case nothing but the sound of the wind in the bare Beech trees and distant crows keeping watch as ominous sentinels over the moorland plateau. Keeping me warm and cosy was the Black Ice 700 sleeping bag and Nordisk Cosy Cover to top things off with an extra layer of crystal down insulation. Kirkstone Pass to Racecourse Hill (High Street) Lake District Wainwright Bagging Part 2 MCM Outdoors 2022-03-06 | Kirkstone Pass to Racecourse Hill (High Street) Lake District Wainwright Bagging Part 2 Having recently decided to undertake the 'Wainwright' challenge, I headed back up to the Lake District National Park in order to tackle a few more peaks. Stunning winter conditions provided fantastic views across the Eastern Fells, with snow and ice underfoot on the higher plateaus. I ticked off Hart Crag, Stony Cove Pike, Thornthwaite Crag and Racecourse Hill (High Street) in what was a brilliant mountain day. The route was 8.71 miles in total with just under 3000ft of ascent. I stop for lunch at the half way point and make a nice warming drink on my Soto Windmaster Stove - which handled the gusty winds admirably. The weather was epic, with stormy clouds rolling by one minute then breaks in the cloud providing expansive views across the ice and snow laden mountains of the Great Langdale valley area. Windchill dropped to around -12 (MWIS) in the summit winds and on occasions, some great scrambling sections were encountered. I got to use a water filter for the first time in my life, namely the QuickDraw Microfilter made by Platypus which I got from my friends over at Valley & Peak whom I'm proud to be working alongside some fantastic outdoor enthusiasts as 'Valley & Peak Family'. I filtered some water directly out of Dungeon Ghyll itself and it was very nice, icy cold and refreshing. MCM Outdoors 2022-01-23 | Nordisk Telemark 2.2LW ULTIMATE Review - Following extensive use and extreme limits testing !This is my honest review of the Nordisk Telemark 2.2 LW (lightweight) tent. Made from SilNylon - the tent weighs in at just 1010 grams (can be made lighter without stuff sack), which - for a 2 person shelter with two doors - is really quite an achievement by Nordisk. Quality craftmanship and materials used throughout, with a single DAC Featherlite Green pole completing the setup. I have used this tent in the majority of conditions, including an extreme 'Red' weather warned storm whereby the tent was tested to it's upper limit. As such, I am qualified to provide a review about this tent. I have left a time index with various bookmarks below which I hope is helpful. I was sent this tent by Nordisk almost a year ago, however there has been no direction of input from them and I am free to provide by unbiased and objective views on the tent. The fact the tent has two doors is great, especially considering the weight - if two people are in the tent, you don't have to climb over each other to get out. The ability to make the vestibule / inner area bigger to suit your needs is another great feature and extremely useful.The tent does not come seam sealed - that is standard for the majority of sil-nylon tents (some manufacturers charge an extra fee as this has to be done by hand) - the seams cannot be taped as it does not adhere to the fabric used. Therefore Nordisk recommend that the tent is sealed which is an easy and pleasant task - I did mine on a warm & breezy day and it was dry in a few hours. Things I would like to see improved:- Better mechanism to secure the door openings i.e. spring toggle - Ability to pre-attach groundsheet to main tent so as to be able to pitch as oneTo surmise, this is a top quality and very light weight shelter which can easily accommodate two people - it is a 2/ 3 season tent designed to enable to you travel light and fast so you can enjoy your outdoor adventures. We check out the stunning scenery and unique geography of this area and bring you some crisp 4K aerial visuals which show off the true beauty of this fascinatingly sculpted landscape. I try out a new tent which I was lucky enough to be able to purchase by recycling some of my other gear as it is always good to try out new outdoor equipment for the benefit of everyone who enjoys my videos. We set up camp as the temperatures begin to plummet; exacerbated by a biting wind which had a supercooling effect as the low level cloud condensed on our skin and tents. I used a Scarp 1 by Tarptent and Al was in his trusted Abisko Lite 2 by Fjallraven. Blue was treated to a fresh set of lamb ribs as a treat on this collaboration camp as Al and I enjoyed a few beers and a fine single malt as we watched the sunset. Panoramic views of snow covered mountains, wintry and tumultuous skies and sudden gusts blasted us with particles of ice and hail throughout the camp. I cooked up some Reindeer Stew for my evening meal and enjoyed a nice chocolate stout to wash it down, whilst staying warm and cosy within the safety of my tent. The next day, the snow and hail had consolidated into a frozen crust, meaning spikes were essential to descend safely back to the van. Finally, we headed back down to the village of Ambleside to enjoy a lovely English Breakfast before heading home. Summit Tarping in Atrocious Weather Conditions in the Mountainsmith Mountain Shelter LT MCM Outdoors 2022-01-03 | Summit Tarping in Atrocious Weather Conditions in the Mountainsmith Mountain Shelter LTI head up onto the summit to test out the Mountainsmith Mountain Shelter LT tarp, which is a lightweight, single skin trekking pole tarp designed for two people. The weather conditions deteriorated, with linear fronts producing squally winds and driving torrential rain - if you enjoy the sound of wind and rain on a tarp, this video is definitely for you. Conditions became steadily worse as I pitched the tarp, which was made more difficult due to the weather conditions. I was very surprised at how stable this tarp is, given it has no structure other than the two trekking poles. This makes a fantastic and cavernous outdoor 'hotel' for enjoying lunch on the fells whilst sheltered from the elements, it is also a great way of encouraging our younger generation to get out and enjoy the great outdoors! I cooked up a typical MCM lunch on the Soto Windmaster stove and enjoyed a warming hot chocolate, before heading back out into the wilds and back to the car. I head up to the stunning Loch Ken for a trip in a Canadian Canoe. We enjoy some Pike fishing and take in the stunning scenery of this beautiful area. Mist hanging in the Douglas Fir trees and the sound of Buzzards and Red Kite echoing across the Loch in the still winter air. My friend Matty cooked up an amazing Venison Stew, slowly cooked over an open fire with Guinness, fresh root vegetables and home made dumplings - sublime! I took the Nordisk Telemark 2.2 LW for my shelter and had a warm, cosy and comfortable night as the temperature dropped below zero. I woke to the sound of Tawny Owls before a great cooked breakfast, courtesy of my good friend Ant. Some drone footage and a look back at just some of the adventures of 2021 finish this one off. A very cold forecast, with icy winds throughout the night and temperatures plunging below zero from late afternoon. The wind chill effect brought things down to double minus figures. I hope in this way, I've kept it simple and to the point for those who wish to see what it is like in real use....... I am fully aware this is not like a 'normal' tech review - I didn't want it to be like that. The clips filmed on the Akaso were rendered in iMovie and upscaled to 4K In short, this is a good value - budget, action camera - there are plenty of accessories and a handy Bluetooth / WiFi remote! It comes with two batteries and a dual charger. Akaso does not scrimp on extras.Build quality is high and it is much improved over the Brave 7 which appeared to have some hardware issues. Akaso have ironed that out - rather than ramble on - I will surmise some strengths and weaknesses below:STRENGTHS:- Good Value & Affordable - Lots of extras included- 2 batteries included- Good build quality- Intuitive user interface- Waterproof without any housing required - In camera audio better than with mic and much improved over Brave 7- Good array of resolution and frame rate- 8K timelapse mode - Front screen to assist with framing shots and useful for vloggersWEAKNESSES:- Image quality not as good as market leading alternatives- Average battery life- 'In camera' image stabilisation needs improvement - highest level image stabilisation requires clips to be processed with the Akaso app - this is an extra step and should not be necessary in my opinion- Audio with mic sounds poorIn short, if you're wondering whether to start making outdoor videos and don't want to splash out on the top of the range cameras, this is good enough to get you started and with two batteries - it should see you through a trip. Camping in Storm Arwen in the Hilleberg Soulo - A Brutal Test in the Lake District National Park MCM Outdoors 2021-11-28 | Camping in Storm Arwen in the Hilleberg Soulo - A Brutal Test in the Lake District National ParkI retreated down to the relative safety of Brotherswater to spend a night at Sykeside camping park. This had originally been my plan for the night after the failed wild camp (see part 1). Staff were friendly and helpful and changed my booking with no issues. There were a few other campers at the site and we all pitched on the higher ground which is afforded some shelter. Luckily, I had brought along my Hilleberg Soulo which was soon pitched and guyed out. As Storm Arwen bore down on the Lake District, the immense winds began to pick up. The fells were soon covered in snow and ice and eventually, the camp site lost all power due to the storm, having to rely on generators. I enjoy a few craft beers in the tent and then headed to the pub for a nice meal. The storm was at full strength when I left the pub and the power of mother nature can be seen in this video. I was toasty in warm in a combination of the Nordisk Oscar -10 sleeping bag and the 'Yeti' by Nordisk 'Cosy Cover', which I placed over myself as an extra layer of insulation. Throughout the stormy night, the winds picked up to such an extent that both camping pods on site were blown from their bases. The noise of the wind overheard sounded like a freight train. The next morning, I awoke to the beautiful sight of snow covered fells, a true winter wonderland.
