Tennessee Lightning storm, 3-27-2021, bolts and thunder compilation V25772 JCMegabyte 2021-04-01 | On March 27th, 2021, a series of severe thunderstorms crossed middle Tennessee, causing widespread flooding and putting on an impressive lightning show. While most of the lightning stayed up in the clouds, the occasional bolt went to ground, and "cloud crawlers" put on a spectacular display every so often, too. Later in the evening, planes began landing at BNA again, and were flying directly below the storm. One aircraft got a giant bolt right in front of the windshield, which must have been an amazing (AND scary) sight from the cockpit! This footage was filmed with a Moto G7 smarphone, which was the ony thing handy at the time. Tornado Bugs - Insect Art - Slow Motion Trails V25400 JCMegabyte 2019-12-25 | Most any summer you can find swarms of tiny little flies circulating over the lawn or other damp grassy area. These swarms can be somewhat sparse or form large dense clouds, but are almost always shaped like a tornado of sorts, hence the nick-name "Tornado Bugs". These little insects are actually known as "Fungus Gnats", and usually live in areas with damp soil where their larvae hatch and develop in as little as 10 days. These swarms are typically made up of one female and a ton of males hoping to mate with her. Like a school of fish, swarms may also confuse predators, helping to protect the entire mass.These scenes were filmed with a Sony a7iii and Cannon 100-400mm lens at realtime and 120fps. Termites vs Birds & Dragonflies Aerial Feast Slow Motion V24871 JCMegabyte 2019-02-11 | Nearly every time the sun warms the ground after a rainy spell, winged subterranian termite queens (and kings) take to the air in mass emerging events to venture forth and start new colonies. The spectacle does not go unnoticed, though... Just about every type of insect-eating predator comes out of the woodwork to take advantage of the free meal. The trick is to catch them! On the ground, ants, spiders and lizards are busy gobbling down as many of the emerging snacks as they can, while the termites are exiting their underground colonies as quickly as possible. In nature, there's usually safety in numbers, but the main benefit of mass emerging events is that there are so many termites bursting out at once that it's nearly impossible to get them all!Once the bugs have run the gauntlet on the ground, the air isn't much safer. Winged ternmites are weak fliers barely and able to stear, so it's not too difficult for a skilled aerobat to catch them in mid-air. Sparrow-sized birds and dragonflies appear out of nowhere and start snapping them up.These scenes were filmed in Santa Clarita, California on October 14th, 2018 and capture the event in 240 frame-per-second slow motion using a Sony FS-700RX high-speed camera. In real time, the action is happening 10 times faster than you see here, so as you can imagine, keeping the camera pointed at the right spot at the right time while maintaining focus is quite a challenge. As with most photography, shooting tons of shots is the key to getting a few that turn out okay. It took over a hundred tries to get just these few. Total lunar eclipse 2019 Telescope and Timelapse V24849 JCMegabyte 2019-02-05 | The start of 2019 (January 20th) featured a "Super Blood Moon" - a total lunar eclipse when the moon orbits particularly close to Earth. Viewing conditions weren't looking so good due to partly cloudy skies, but fortunately there was enough clearing throughout the event to get some decent shots.So why does the "Blood Moon" glow reddish-orange? The reason is the same as why sunsets on Earth are often a beautiful red-orange color - "Rayleigh scattering" of light waves. As it turns out, Earth's atmosphere (about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gasses/particles) is pretty good at absorbing and reflecting certain frequencies (colors) of light, while letting others pass more easily. Higher frequency/energy color such as violet, blue, and green is absorbed and scattered (sent off in different directions) by air molecules (which is also the reason why the sky appears blue) while lower frequency/energy yellow, orange and red light tends to pass more-or less straight through. This means that the more of Earth's atmosphere the light has to travel through, the more of the green-blue-violet colors are filtered out. So what does Earth's atmosphere have to do with the moon, and why is a "Blood Moon" different than a "normal" total lunar eclipse? ...During a "normal" total lunar eclipse, Earth's shadow more-or less passes directly across the lunar surface, shading it in complete darkness. However, if Earth's shadow only grazes the Moon, only sunlight which has passed through Earth's atmosphere (and has thus been filtered of most green-blue-violet light) makes it to the Moon, essentially casting a sunset onto the Moon! This would be an amazing sight from the lunar surface as well.The first segment shows an 828-frame time lapse sequence for the entire event as seen though a 17mm f/4.0 lens at 15 second intervals (Canon 5D Mk2). The following video clips show the progress of the eclipse as seen through an 800mm Celestron telescope with 2x optical teleconverter and Sony a7III mirrorless camera, attached to the telescope with a T-Mount adapter.While never really crystal clear due to the hazy high cloud coverage, the lower clouds managed to stear clear of the fully eclipsed disc a few times. A couple of panned still images taken with long exposure help show the Moon's detail.Conditions were soggy as temperatures fell, resulting in a heavy dew accumulating on just about every surface, making it necessary to use a home-made warm air blower to keep the Canon's lens from fogging up. The telescope fared a little better being partially protected by a short lens hood, but by event's end it was starting to fog-up as well and needed to be wiped by hand. Ice Flower Phenomenon (exuded freezing plant water) V24622 JCMegabyte 2018-12-12 | These interesting growths appeared early on frosty mornings in the fall as temperatures dropped below freezing overnight in Tennessee. Upon closer inspection, it was evident that these "blossoms" were actually ice crystals, forming at the base of certain plant stems. It looked like the stems had split open and the water inside them slowly oozed out, freezing as soon as it hit the frigid air. As more water pushed out and froze, the existing ice "pedals" grew in length, some twisting and bending into even more flower-like shapes. The plant stems seem to be dead, but still being connected to ground water which wicks up them and leaks out wherever an opening occurs. Freezing seems to help split the stem, providing more places for the wicking water to escape. At dawn, the air temperature was a chilly 25°F and the edge of the woods had a narrow band of these "ice flowers" which was clearly visible from some distance. Some exuded from fairly high up the stem, while most others grew only a few inches above ground level.I only had a short time to film these delicate creations, for as soon as the sunlight landed upon them they became watery-translucent and began to melt immediately. Within 30 minutes or so, they had completely vanished, leaving only a few photos and video as evidence that they ever existed at all. National Corvette Museum, Sinkhole and Destroyed Cars 4K V24531 JCMegabyte 2018-09-28 | Of course there's nothing like seeing this place in person, but for those of you living too far away to visit, you can enjoy this condensed tour of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Kentucky, filmed with a GoPro Hero 5 Black in 4K resolution. This museum features a huge collection of rare and one-of-a-kind Corvettes, from the present all the way back to the car's beginning in 1953. This museum made world news in 2014 when a large sinkhole opened up in the middle of the night, right under their largest display area known as the "Sky Dome", and swallowed 8 rare and valuable cars. The museum has since filled/repaired the huge 30-foot hole, but left a portion of the cave below intact with a tubular manhole for accessing the remaining cavern. In this video, you'll see a view down the manhole, as well as the cars which were damaged or destroyed. 35 Thousand Feet - Window View from 7 Miles Up V24410 JCMegabyte 2018-09-20 | These scenes were shot from the window of a Boeing 737 enroute from LAX to BNA (Nashville) with a GoPro Hero5 Black (in 4K and HD resolutions) at about 35,000 feet, while flying at around 550 MPH. The footage highlights some interesting perspectives of a variety of weather encoutered along the way. Many scenes were sped-up by up to 4x to better show the 3-D perspective of some otherwise slow-moving scenes. While it's not often apparent from the ground, clouds can typically be found in many layers at different altitudes, as is clearly illustrated by this footage. While cumulus towers grow from near the ground to 30,000 and 40,000 feet, other types of clouds form in foggy or whispy thin layers at all different levels. Pilots often have to fly in and through various layers and dodge the more dangerous formations, such as Cumulonimbus (thumnderstorms) altogether. How Fast Are They? Realtime Hummingbird fights V23976 JCMegabyte 2018-06-21 | You've seen them in slow motion. Now it's time to see just how fast they move in real life! This short collection of clips shows some of the best 2018 action captured at real-life speed, illustrating just how lightning fast these little birds are. Some recent research has suggested that in terms of relative speed (speed vs. size of object) these birds are the fastest animals on planet Earth. When it comes to absolute speed, the Cheetah is still the fastest land animal, reaching short burst speeds of up 70 mph. The Peregrine Falcon rules sky with dive speeds reaching 242 mph, and the Sailfish cuts through the ocean at around 65 mph. However, these are all relatively large animals. To determine an animal's speed relative to its size, researchers sometimes divide the measured speed of the creature by its body length, the result being expressed as "Body Lengths per Second" (BL/S).Hummingbirds typically hit 25-35mph in straght-line flight, but can reach speeds up to 58 mph in a dive, which can usually be seen (and more often HEARD) in spring as the males perform high-speed courship dives to impress their prospective perched mates. This translates to about 340 BL/S for a 3-inch-long bird @ 58 mph, and easily beats the Cheetah (26 BL/S), the Peregrine (304 BL/S), a fighter jet with afterburners (150 BL/S) and the Space Shuttle re-entry at 207 BL/S. Even in straight level flight at 30 mph the birds travel at a blistering 176 BL/S. They can easily tolerate 10g (10x the force of gravity) and their ultra-low mass allows for amazing acceleration, deceleration, direction change. Their high speed maneuverability is accomplished with simple thrust-vectering from highly specialized wings and wing muscles, able to flap in a wide degree of angles relative to their bodies.All this speed is worthless if the senses and brain can't keep up with it, which implies that these birds may experience the world at a much faster speed than we do. Males and females can be equally aggressive, and even the larger species (such as Anna's Hummingbird) aren't immune from attack by smaller birds such as Allen's Hummingbird males and females.As spring progresses, more natural nectar sources become available for a short time and the feeder sees a lot less traffic, but that doesn't stop the birds from maintaining their territory and chasing off any other birds that try to feed there.These tiny birds weight less than 1/4 ounce (2.5 - 4.5 grams is typical) but are very aggressive and surprisingly tough. Spectacular 4K/UHD SpaceX Falcon 9 launch plume V23176 JCMegabyte 2017-12-23 | To the surprise of many, a spectacular event filled the southwestern sky tonight as a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched from Vandenberg Air Force base at 5:27pm Pacific Standard Time. These dusk launches can be quite a sight, and this event was no exception. For those of us that knew it was coming it was a great show. For anyone caught by surprise it may have looked like a Nuke from North Korea! 4K 2017 Geminid Meteor Shower Time lapse Star Spin collection V23173 JCMegabyte 2017-12-18 | In spite of some cirrus cloud interference this year's Geminid Meteor Shower peak turned better than most years with quite a few meteors being captured on film. This series of sequences was filmed with a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mk2 and Tokina f/3.5 fisheye lens set to take continuous 10-second exposures from dusk until dawn.The first sequence features long-trail compositing (using propreitary JCMDI workflows) which allows meteor streaks to remain in the frame for a few seconds so that they really stand out.Sequence 2 is non-composited and shows the sky more clearly but at the cost making the meteor streaks last only 1/30th of a second, so you really have to pay attention to spot them. About mid-way through this sequence the video roll is paused to zoom-in on one particularly big and bright meteor.The final sequence is a "no decay" composite in which any sky activity is accumulated into the scene as the sequence progresses. Kentucky Butterflies - HD Close-Up with Natural HQ Audio V23005 JCMegabyte 2017-09-20 | Butterflies have significantly different behaviors depending on their environment. Here in Kentucky, near the city of Franklin where this filming was done, these butterflies were more interested in feeding on natural salts and minerals in the damp earth than nectaring on flowers. Of course they do need to take in a certain amount of sugars and other nutrients, but finding them on the ground in forest clearings was more common than visiting flowers.Species shown here include the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele, on the green leafy foliage), Tawny Emperor butterflies (Asterocampa clyton, brown with the darker hindwings), and Varegated Fritillaries (lighter orange-brown, feeding in groups). Desert Lightning Storm Time Lapse 9-9-17 Santa Clarita V22989 JCMegabyte 2017-09-10 | These sequences were filmed from Santa Clarita, CA and show a particularly active thunderstorm which formed over the Antelope Valley on the evening of September 9th, 2017. This storm put on quite a show, capturing a lot of local attention and even made the local news. It lasted for a couple of hours after dusk, then faded out into the night.In the first few sequences (right side of the frame) you can see the green and red lights of a drone flying around in the scene. Apparently someone was trying to capture an aerial view of the storm! Super Scoopers Slow Motion 240fps at Castaic Lake V22973 JCMegabyte 2017-09-08 | Fire season in southern California brings out some of the most interesting fire-fighting aircraft, including Erickson Sky Cranes, Various water-dropping/rescue helicopters, and even Phos Chek-dropping DC-10 converted airliners! One of the most recognizable aerial assets is a pair of bright yellow and red amphibious aircraft (seaplanes with wheels) known as the "Superscoopers". These two CL-415 aircraft are part of an 88-plane fleet (95 were built, 7 were "retired"), built at the Bombardier Aerospace facility in Ontario, Canada. They are leased by Los Angeles county each year during fire season.According to Wikipedia, a number of other countries use these aircraft as well, including Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Morocco, and Spain.The aircraft are crewed by two pilots, with seating for 9 additional personnel. It's powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123AF turboprop engines, generating 2,380 static horsepower (1.775 Mega Watts) each. The plane has a wingspan of 93 feet, cruises at about 200 mph, and can scoop-up 1620 gallons (13,536 lbs) of water in about 12 seconds at 81 mph while skimming only about 1350 feet of water surface. In actual practice, scooping speed is more like 90 mph over a distance of 2000 ft. It's always better to have a little more airspeed and room to get the job done safely!These scenes were filmed at Castaic Lake with a Sony FS700RH and 200mm lens while the aircraft were fighting the "La Tuna" wildfire near Glendale, California. The wind changed direction twice during this event resulting in the aircraft having to use three different approach patterns during the day. Total Solar Eclipse 2017 Time Lapse as seen in Nashville, TN V22939 JCMegabyte 2017-09-07 | One of the most spectacular "bucket-list" events in nature, a total eclipse of the sun, occurred in a narrow band across the entire United States on August 21st, 2017. The path of totality (where the sun is completely covered by the moon) was about 40 miles wide and lasted for around 2 and a half minutes at best. If one was lucky enough to be in this path AND the sky was clear of clouds, the event was one that few people get to experience in their lifetime.The eclipse starts slowly and unless one has the proper viewing equipment, it isn't obvious to the casual observer. However, as the eclipse approached 80% around 1pm, sunlight levels were noticeably subdued. At 90% - 98% sunlight levels were much like dusk, although the sky was still radiating the full bright blue of mid-day. As the last 2% of the sun was slowly covered, sunlight became more orange and dim while the sky still radiated its normal (although somewhat reduced) blue light. The planet Venus became bright and clear to the west, and other planets were probably visible as well although I was too busy to look for them at the time.During the very short period of total eclipse ( starts at 1:18 ), I yanked the filter off of the camera while the intervalometer kept clicking away, and tried to take in as much of the event as possible. Solar prominences (the large, red "flares" seen on the right side of the sun were clearly visible to the naked eye and especially noticeable under magnification. While the insects are particularly noisy during the day in Tennessee, the chorus changed noticeably - crickets began singing and other nightly noises slowly increased, too. The lighting was particularly strange - like dusk but with a weird orange and blue tint. It's one of those things you just have to experience to see the full effect.Just prior to the start of the event, I strapped a GoPro Hero5 Black to a tree on the hill and let film a time lapse ( starts at 4:11 ) at 5-second intervals of the whole event. Unfortunately, the GoPro kept adjusting its settings to maintain a consistent exposure level, so the gradual darkening and lightening of the sky and earth is not so apparent. However, the short duration of totality does show up well, as does the passing of the moon's shadow across the sky and clouds ( seen at 4:35 ), giving this sequence an interesting perspective.Finally, as the eclipse waned, I spent a few minutes marveling at the crescent-shaped shadows all over the ground. One interesting effect of a non-circular light source is that any object which casts a shadow with a hole in it acts like a pin-hole camera, and projects an image in the shape of the light source (eclipsed Sun). 4k-UHD Butterfly Emerging 4x Time Lapse V22437 JCMegabyte 2017-07-10 | This scene was filmed with a Sony FS700RH high-speed camera and Convergeant Design 7Q+ 4K SSD recorder/monitor in high-quality 4K/UHD, then sped up to yeild this 4x time lapse sequence of the event - A Gulf Fritillary butterfly emerging from its chrysalis.The actual emerging part only takes 60 seconds or so while the entire event takes about 8-10 minutes from the moment the pupal shell cracks-open until the butterfly completes the wing expansion process. Once the butterfly has pulled free of the chrysalis and is hanging in the clear, it begins pumping a clear greenish fluid into the wings' vein structure to expand them to full size. You can see the insect partially opening and closing its wings to help them expand straight and wrinkle-free. Once the wings are expanded, the butterfly remains still for two or more hours while the fluid and vein structure harden. After that, the insect is ready to fly. Females frequently mate during this wing hardening time, as the males patrol around the host plants looking for them. Butterfly emerging (realtime,handheld HD) Gulf Fritillary V22532 JCMegabyte 2017-07-10 | While snapping some still images of Gulf Fritillary butterfly early stages on the host plant, I happened upon one of them just starting to emerge from its chrysalis. Although it wasn't my best equipment, I was fortunate to have the little Canon full HD HS100 digital elph on hand to capture the 60-second event which I would normally have to wait for several hours to capture. Holding the camera steady was a challenge as I bent down low with the neighbor's cat rubbing against me, almost knocking me over trying to get some attention. Seems like everything is out to get you while doing wildlife photography! Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly Slow Motion 240fps V22530 JCMegabyte 2017-07-09 | The Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio rutulus) is a common sight in Santa Clarita and is having a particularly good year in 2017. Finding two or three of these passing through the neighborhood at any given time, pausing for a brief territorial battle, has been a daily event for at least the past two months. In these scenes we see a female hovering around a small apple tree, behaving as if she is selecting a site to lay her eggs. While Apple is not a typical host plant for this species, this one certainly makes an attempt to oviposit near the end of the video, although I was unable to verify if she actually left an egg there or not. Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar Spins Silk Suspension Loop V22343 JCMegabyte 2017-06-23 | This documentary compilation shows a Western Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes coloro) butterfly caterpillar "strapping" itself in with its own silk for the pupation process, where it sheds its final skin and becomes a pupa or "chrysalis".Unlike its eastern counterpart, the chrysalis phase of this deep-desert dwelling butterfly's life cycle can include a hibernation period (known as "diapause") which can last 7 years or more in drought conditions, so selecting a proper site is critical for survival.The caterpillar can wander for several days searching for a suitable location which is shielded from predators, high winds, feezing winter cold, and daytime summer temperatures which can exceed 140 °F at ground level. In most cases, this species selects a rock crack or other crevice between or under large boulders to protect itself from the extreme conditions.Next, the caterpillar must attach itself to the selected location, which can be a vertical surface or even upside-down under a rock. It begins by spinning a silken pad on the chosen surface with a small silk mound or "button" at the tail-end of the pad to which it will anchor its tail. This part of the process is already completed when filming was started for this series. Then, as shown in these scenes, it spins a silken loop around its midsection to secure the upper part of its body. The loop is attached to the surface on both sides of the caterpillar's body. It works back and forth from one side to the other, each time adding another strand to the loop which becomes noticeably thicker as 15-20 or more strands are added. The finished loop is quite thick and some of the individual strands can be seen. When finished spinning the loop, the caterpillar ducks its head under and into the loop, then works it down to the proper location on its body where it becomes captured in the folds of its skin. The chicks have all now left the nest and are hopping around the branches of nearby trees. The last one to fledge ended up on the ground either unwilling or unsure how to get up to the branches above where its siblings were. The parents tried for over an hour to lead the little bird up each of several routes but every time it was headed the right way, it would hop back down to the ground rather than continue upwards. Afraid of heights perhaps? After spending a couple of nights in some lower bushes, the straggler managed to reach the treetops and joined the rest of its family. Scrub Jay Family 2017 with 3 new chicks V21486 JCMegabyte 2017-04-26 | After successfully rearing another batch in 2016, the Scrub Jay parents are at it again. This time they're back in the same tree they used for the 2015 series, with a new nest about 2 feet from the previous spot, and with 3 chicks instead of two. I'd known about this nest for over a month but this is the first time I've had a look inside. These chicks are probably a week old and are making good progress. 4K Extreme Macro Butterfly Metamorphosis Time Lapse V21154 JCMegabyte 2017-01-24 | This upload features two Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae incarnata) butterflies finishing their metamorphosis process and emerging as adults in 900x time lapse. Both short and long versions of the video are shown.The sequence covers the last 17 hours of the pupal phase where the most conspicuous metamorphic changes take place inside the chrysalis. The brown-gray pupal shell color becomes translucent as the orange and black wing pattern develops. As eclosion (emerging) nears, the adult butterfly inside can easily be seen as it slowly separates from the pupal shell and finally breaks free.Filmed with a Canon 5D Mk2 using a Canon MP-E 65mm super macro lens at 30-second intervals in 4K+ resolution. The frame rate in the short version has been slowed down during emerging sequence to help see the emerging event. Butterfly Caterpillar Prepares for Metamorphosis Time Lapse 6 V20944 JCMegabyte 2016-09-26 | This series of sequences would normally have appeared on the JcmdiStockFootage channel, but it was interesting and educational enough to rate placement on the this main channel.This is a Gulf Fritillary butterfly (Agraulis vanillae incarnata) caterpillar preparing for the next phase of its life cycle - the pupal phase, where it will transform itself into an adult butterfly. The first scene shows the caterpillar selecting a site in which to pupate. Next, it spins a small mound of silk (AKA a button) on which to attach itself. The silk fibers are carefully woven and attached to the twig to provide a secure mounting spot where the caterpillar will spend the next few weeks. Once the button is finished, the caterpillar turns around to rest for a while (30-60 minutes is typical). This resting period may also allow the silk to properly "dry" or otherwise harden. Then, the caterpillar moves forward slowly, feeling around with its tail end for the silk button. On the caterpillar's tail is a surface called a "cremaster", which functions like the "hook" side of a velcro-like fastening system. The caterpillar can apparently detect the silk button as the cremaster hooks make contact and stick to the loop-like silk strands of the button - again similar to the velcro system. Once good contact is made, the caterpillar grinds its tail end into the silk, making a secure connection. The caterpillar then begins to relax and release its grip on the twig, eventually falling free of its hold except the cremaster. It will remain suspended by it tail in this way until it transforms into a pupa after a 1-2 days. It's interesting to note how the color around southern California remains black (very dry) during nearly all of the the two month time period.Over 2000 still images were collected every 20 minutes for 2-months to make this video. Time lapse sequence made from original Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) still images, courtesy of NOAA.GOV (public domain data). Pooper Bird (Black Phoebe) 240fps Slow Motion Bug Chase V20388 JCMegabyte 2016-08-10 | This Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans), affectionately known as "Pooper Bird" because of the huge piles of droppings it leaves behind on the patio furniture, is a master of chasing down small insects, and spends many hours each day doing so. In spite of the bird's appetite, it doesn't seem to make a dent in the insect population!Filmed here in full 1080p HD with a Sony FS700RH at 240fps, the resulting video at 24fps yields a 10x slower than real life playback. Even though this bird is light and airy, and doesn't fly too fast, it's difficult to keep in frame and focus - especially using the full 200mm zoom as we see here.
