Often using materials that relate to the landscapes she’s depicting—charcoal from burned trees, mined minerals, or reflective metals—Fernández’s work has a luminous, seductive beauty that draws viewers in, while unapologetically challenging us to think critically about the inherent violence of colonization and how it continues to shape our ideas about the land and one another. Time Lapse Art | Felix Gonzalez-Torress “Untitled” National Gallery of Art 2022-12-07 | How do you feel wherever you are? Is “Nowhere better than this place” or “Somewhere better than this place”? Felix Gonzalez-Torres invites viewers to make a choice in this interactive work. Filmed over the course of a month, watch visitors decide which option they will take from two endlessly replenished stacks of paper in the National Gallery of Art. Gonzalez-Torres not only confronts viewers with a dilemma, he allows them to take a piece of his art wherever they go. The Double: Identity and Difference in Art since 1900 was on view at the National Gallery of Art July 10 – October 31, 2022. The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation provided major support for the exhibition. It was also generously supported by Dr. Mihael Polymeropoulos and Mrs. Mahy D. Polymeropoulos. Called to Create Exhibition Trailer National Gallery of Art 2022-09-28 | For decades Thornton Dial, James “Son Ford” Thomas, Lonnie Holley, Mary T. Smith, Purvis Young, and many other Black artists in the South worked with little recognition, often using recycled materials as their art supplies and yards, porches, or boarded-up storefronts as their galleries. The women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, made dazzling quilts from well-worn clothing or leftover scraps of fabric. Despite racism and other forms of discrimination, all of these artists drew on deep cultural and spiritual traditions to create some of the finest art of our time. In 2020, the National Gallery acquired 40 sculptures, assemblages, paintings, reliefs, quilts, and drawings from the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, and several related gifts have recently entered the collection as well. Enjoy these inventive works, including nine Gee’s Bend quilts, and learn the remarkable stories of their making and makers. Have you ever cooked a peacock? with Carla Hall and Chris Curtis National Gallery of Art 2022-08-08 | Celebrity Chef and Washington, DC local Carla Hall stops by and talks about key ingredients for cooking and painting with Chef Chris Curtis, Executive Chef at the National Gallery. Peacock Picadillo Empanadas Dough Recipe Serves: 30 appetizer-sized empanadas Ingredients For the Dough: 3 cups | Masa Harina for tortillas 3/4 tsp. | Salt 1 Tbsp. | Lard 2-3 cups | Warm water 30 Tbsp. | Filling (recipe follows) Method: 1. In a large bowl mix together the masa, salt and lard. Gradually add enough water to form a smooth soft dough. Add additional water if the dough seems dry. 2. Divide the dough into 30 balls about the size of a walnut. 3. Place a ball of the dough between two pieces of plastic wrap. Flatten each ball into a six-inch circle, using a tortilla press 4. Remove the top layer of plastic and add 1 tablespoon of the peacock picadillo mixture in the center of the dough. Using your fingertip or a pastry brush, place a little bit of water around the edge of the dough. Fold the dough over and seal. Remove the empanada from the plastic and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. 5. Repeat until all the empanadas are formed. 6. Pan fry or deep fry the empanadas in hot oil until nicely browned. Peacock Picadillo Empanadas Recipe Ingredients for the filling: 1 Tbsp | Olive Oil 1 lb. | Lean ground peacock or other meat 1/2 ea. | Yellow onion, finely chopped 1 clove | Finely chopped garlic 2 ea. | Peeled, seeded and chopped tomatoes 1 ea. | Peeled seeded and chopped cooking apple 1 ea. | Chopped Serrano chili pepper 1/2 cup | Apricot & Dates plumped in warm water and drained when soft 1/4 cup | Chopped green olives 1/2 tsp. | Oregano 1/2 tsp. | Thyme 1/2 tsp. | Cumin Salt and pepper for seasoning Method: 1. Heat the oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground peacock and sauté, breaking up any chunks until nicely browned. 2. Add the onion and garlic and continue to sauté for 5 minutes. 3. Add all the remaining ingredients and allow to simmer over low heat for an additional 20 minutes. Season to taste and allow to cool. Mario García Torres’s “Today (News from Kabul)” National Gallery of Art 2022-07-27 | Mario García Torres explores the war in Afghanistan through art, struggling to come to terms with violence there and at his home in Mexico. García Torres was inspired by Alighiero Boetti, the Italian artist who opened the mysterious One Hotel in Kabul more than fifty years ago. The artist talks about how he transformed Boetti’s poetic mirror-writing into a concrete presentation of the news of daily violence suffered by the Afghan people. Carney, the first Black soldier awarded the Medal of Honor, reflect on how the story of The Massachusetts 54th Regiment connects to the struggles still going on today. The 54th was the first unit of Black soldiers to fight a major battle in the Civil War. Weems used a photograph of the memorial to the 54th in a series about the Black Americans who left the South in search of greater freedom. Afro-Atlantic Histories Exhibition Trailer National Gallery of Art 2022-04-06 | On view at the National Gallery of Art: April 10 – July 17, 2022For centuries, artists have told and retold the complex histories of the African Diaspora. Explore this enduring legacy in the exhibition Afro-Atlantic Histories, which takes an in-depth look at the historical experiences and cultural formations of Black and African people since the 17th century. More than 130 powerful works of art, including paintings, sculpture, photographs, and time-based media by artists from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, bring these narratives to life. This exhibition was initially presented as Histórias Afro-Atlânticas in 2018 by the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil. Major support for this exhibition is provided by the Ford Foundation.
