Media FactoryBestselling author Lev Grossman joins with Andrew Liptak of Geek Mountain State for a conversation at Phoenix Books in Burlington, Vermont.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Lev Grossman is the author of the New York Times bestselling novels The Magicians, The Magician King, and The Magician’s Land. The New Yorker named The Magicians as one of the best books of 2009. In 2011 Grossman was awarded the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer by the World Science Fiction Society. Grossman is also the book critic at Time magazine, and he has written about books and technology for the New York Times, Salon, the Wall Street Journal, Wired, Lingua Franca, the Village Voice and the Believer, as well as NPR. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and three children. He's 43, slightly built and probably wouldn't last long in a post-apocalyptic, eye-for-an-eye world.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Quentin Coldwater has been cast out of Fillory, the secret magical land of his childhood dreams. With nothing left to lose he returns to where his story began, the Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic. But he can’t hide from his past, and it’s not long before it comes looking for him. Along with Plum, a brilliant young undergraduate with a dark secret of her own, Quentin sets out on a crooked path through a magical demimonde of gray magic and desperate characters. But all roads lead back to Fillory, and his new life takes him to old haunts, like Antarctica, and to buried secrets and old friends he thought were lost forever. He uncovers the key to a sorcery masterwork, a spell that could create magical utopia, a new Fillory—but casting it will set in motion a chain of events that will bring Earth and Fillory crashing together. To save them he will have to risk sacrificing everything.
The Magician’s Land is an intricate thriller, a fantastical epic, and an epic of love and redemption that brings the Magicians trilogy to a magnificent conclusion, confirming it as one of the great achievements in modern fantasy. It’s the story of a boy becoming a man, an apprentice becoming a master, and a broken land finally becoming whole.

Read more about the award at herblockwoodprize.org Produced in collaboration with Media Factory, Burlington City Arts, and the Herb Lockwood Prize in the Arts.
A tribute to Michael Chorney by arts writer Pamela Polston:
On his website, this year’s Herb Lockwood Prize winner notes a string of past occupations, including but not limited to assembly line worker, librarian, janitor, carpenter and house painter. However, most Vermonters have likely known him in more celebrated roles: musician — on saxophone and guitar — composer, dance program collaborator at Middlebury College, arranger and producer, teacher. And many probably know he’s the recipient of a Tony Award.
Our winner has had a long and fruitful journey in the Vermont music scene and beyond. I first became aware of him back in the 1980s, when he was performing in an acoustic band called Feast or Famine. Several bands, genres and years later, as he led the “acid jazz” group viperHouse, I began to recognize not only his incredible versatility and musical curiosity but his significant mentorship of other, younger musicians. Some of the players who came into their own in viperHouse would become in-demand jazz musicians in Vermont, and doing their own original work.
In nearly a dozen ensembles, in styles ranging from folk to jazz to what he dubs “instrumental psych-rock film scores for nonexistent movies,” our man has continued to compose original works, to surpass himself in creativity, and to influence and collaborate with many others. That fake film-score band is his current project, named Freeway Clyde. Their latest record, reviewed by Seven Days music editor Chris Farnsworth earlier this year, features music from the “lost” film Sept Etoiles (Seven Stars), allegedly recorded in Portugal. Unfortunately, the director was arrested on smuggling charges — again allegedly — and the film fell apart.
“Even if the fake film never saw the light of day, the very real soundtrack fortunately did,” Farnsworth writes. “It's some of the band's best work: a clever, rarely still record that moves between sunny jazz and ambient electronica with ease.”
Terrific music for apocryphal films aside, our man’s best-known collaboration was with singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell on the wildly successful folk-rock opera Hadestown. Still running on Broadway, the show, which is an expansive retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, had its more stripped-down debut in Vermont. I had the good fortune to see the nascent production in a small Burlington venue, then a bigger and longer version off-Broadway, and finally the fully developed show on Broadway, which was utterly thrilling. Hadestown was nominated for 14 Tony Awards and took home eight, including Best Musical, in 2019. Among them also was the award for Best Orchestration, which our man shared with New York musician Todd Sickafoose.
“I am the only person who has played every live performance of Hadestown,” he told Eva Sollberger for an episode of her video series “Stuck in Vermont.” “There’s a lot of heart,” he added. “Maybe that’s the Vermont part of the show.”
There is probably little doubt among this audience who I mean by “our man.” A resident of both Lincoln, Vt., and a remarkable place called Hadestown, Michael Chorney is the 2024 recipient of the Herb Lockwood Prize.Seth Neary: InspiredMedia Factory2024-06-25 | PechaKucha Night Burlington (or “PKN Burlington”) is a visual storytelling event that celebrates the creative power and diversity of our community here in Burlington, across Vermont, and beyond.

On the first day, students are introduced to the fundamentals of playwriting, and inspired by writing prompts to begin getting their ideas on paper. On the second (and optional third) visit(s), students read each other’s works-in-progress aloud, support and critique one another in a moderated feedback process, and refine their plays further. Teachers then select and submit three plays for Festival consideration. A panel of theater artists are brought together at the Flynn to read and rank these plays for successful application of playwriting principles, and then pass the top two along to Vermont Stage. Vermont Stage hires top-notch actors and directors to rehearse and perform the plays at the Festival at Main Street Landing in May. One play from each school is rehearsed and performed onstage, and the second play receives a public cold reading and moderated feedback session. The third place play gets an honorable mention in the Festival program.Vermont Young Playwrights Festival Cold Readings Part 1Media Factory2024-05-31 | A professional playwright/teaching artist visits your middle or high school classroom for 2 or 3 full days over the course of a month or two. Dr. Ansel Augustine will be the Commencement speaker at the 117th Saint Michael's College commencement ceremony. Dr. Ansel Augustine, D. Min, an award-winning author and speaker, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Assistant Director of African American Affairs of the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, will deliver the Commencement address at Saint Michael’s College to the Class of 2024.
Dr. Augustine began his career in ministry more than 20 years ago when he became the youth minister at his home parish of St. Peter Claver in the Treme area of New Orleans, which he later helped rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. St. Peter Catholic Church was run for 30 years by the Edmundites, the Catholic order which also founded Saint Michael’s College.
Throughout his career, Dr. Augustine has focused his ministry on youth, young adults, and multicultural groups, with social justice advocacy at the core of his work. He has also worked to shed light on the Black Catholic experience through workshops and presentations throughout the country, through his writing, and as the film producer of “Black Faith Matters,” for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award.
This past February, Dr. Augustine was invited to campus by the Edmundite Center for Peace and Justice to give a talk titled “Radically Black and Authentically Catholic – A Journey of Faith.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ansel Augustine back to campus so he can share his wisdom with our graduates,” said Saint Michael’s College President Richard Plumb. “Dr. Augustine has used his own experiences and observations to help make the world a better, more inclusive place. His message is an important one for our graduates who will be embarking on their own paths and making their own marks on the world.”
Dr. Augustine serves on the faculty of two higher education institutions: Xavier University of Louisiana’s Institute for Black Catholic Studies and Loyola University New Orleans’ Institute for Ministry. He also previously served as Campus Minister at Xavier University of Louisiana, Loyola University New Orleans, and St. John’s University in Queens, New York. He is the author of several books, including “The African American Catholic Youth Bible” and “Leveling the Playing Field: Can the Church We Love, Love Us Back?” Dr. Augustine most recently served as the Director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He also formerly worked as New Orleans Area Director for Vagabond Missions, the Executive Director of Cultural Diversity and Outreach for the Archdiocese of Washington, and the Associate Director/Coordinator of Black Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the CYO Youth and Young Adult Ministry Office. He has served on the Board of Directors for the National Catholic Young Adult Ministry Association (NCYAMA) and the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM).
Additionally, Dr. Augustine has worked in prison ministry for more than 25 years in various capacities. He volunteers with the Mardi Gras Indian Council and at the Backstreet Cultural Museum. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; the Knights of Columbus; the Knights of Peter Claver; and the Wild Tchoupitoulas (Black Masking) Mardi Gras Indians. He is also an Associate Member of the Sisters of the Holy Family in New Orleans.
