Gondor Gambolling 57: In which Gryfflet waves goodbye to Minas Tirith and to Epic Battles Signum University 2023-08-02 | Gryfflet has been waiting on tenterhooks since our last session, standing before the Great Gate of Minas Tirith as the city burns around him, in case the invasion started without us. He takes us to meet Prince Imrahil who has been awaiting our arrival to help with the Defence of Minas Tirith, one of the Epic Battles that Gryfflet enjoys so much. We mount the walls in the company of Mithrandir whose job will be to inspire the defenders and keep them from despair while Gryfflet engages with the enemy. Initially there is some confusion as to what Gryfflet should be doing, but with the help of the ever-present peanut gallery he sets to attacking the siege towers that loom over the walls, destroying their grapnels and blowing them up with conveniently-placed powder kegs. As directed we move around the walls as various threats present themselves, occasionally venturing down to the streets, until this phase of the battle is complete and we move to defend the Gate against the great ram Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, which has been repaired since we vandalised it so long ago. Another Epic Battle ensues which progresses much the same as the first, although some of the mechanisms remain opaque, so Gryfflet consoles himself wreaking familiar havoc until the final confrontation before the Gate takes an unexpected turn. We are given the chance to catch our death and consider what just happens when a glitch means that we have to repeat the encounter, not helped by the paucity of travel options during the battle itself. The subsequent strange encounter leads to a stunning revelation leading Mithrandir to wonder what has been happening in Rohan. He therefore sends Gryfflet to find out. Pausing only to address a case of loose lips in the City Stables, Gryfflet sets out northwards where he finds the despatch rider who had been sent to Rohan, who wants us to warn the Rohirrim that the way is blocked. Pausing only to make sure that we have all the correct Quests lined up, Gryfflet crosses the river into Taur Drúadan ready to explore a new region."It's time for Epic Battles…I'm awesome at Epic Battles!""Oh, it's an enemy, not a thing!""It was nice of them to pack their own tower with gunpowder!""Boom! Oh yeah, that was rather satisfying!""I wouldn't want to get blown up in the middle of an Epic Battle or anything!""Beriadir seems to have this under control!""Remember when I was complaining they were ignoring me? Not complaining any more!""I don't mind doing this Instance more than once…I don't want to do it more than twice, I think, but OK!"We were so busy with the Epic Battles that we didn't have time for any Lore Questions this session.
Gondor Gambolling 58: In which Gryfflet decides to just say yes to Drûgs Signum University 2023-08-02 | Gryfflet has been poised on the edge of Taur Drúadan ready to explore the new region having finished his visit to Minas Tirith, but we take a few moments to reminisce, which proves convenient when a glitch forces us to pause for a few minutes. Upon resumption Gryfflet is ready to plunge into the woods and is surprised to discover that some of the local wildlife have Quests attached, which is something that we haven't seen in a while, but then his attention is caught by some strange tracks which he follows, coming across more strange creatures on the way. He is pleased to make the acquaintance of one Khôr-buri-Ghân (and so is the Professor who gives us a quick pronunciation lesson) who is the son of the famous Ghân-buri-Ghân. We explain that we are looking for the Rohirrim and he sends us to his village to consult his father. His directions are not entirely clear but Gryfflet manages to find an old Gondorian road which sets us on the right path. Pausing only to examine some strange glowing pods, he enters the village where Khôr-buri-Ghân directs him to tour the village and find out about their customs. To our utter lack of surprise he is given various errands to run, including the usual requests to deal with hostile invaders. More unusual is a search for suitable wood with which to carve a portrayal of Gryfflet himself, and a request to demonstrate Hobbit laughter around the village, but he finally tracks down Ghân-buri-Ghân who has been expecting him, and naturally enough hands out more errands. Once he has picked up all the Quests he can find, Gryfflet retraces his path through the village only to be sent straight back to Ghân-buri-Ghân but at least he knows the way now. It turns out that Khôr-buri-Ghân wants to recover the body of his slain brother from the nearby Orc camp, so Gryfflet is transported very nearly back to where we started the session. This time he heads up the road to where the Orcs have set up their blockade and proceeds to sneak through the camp in the wake of Khôr-buri-Ghân's revenge whereupon he is returned to the village to make his report. He scours the village for any remaining Quests which takes us to the end of the session."What a wonderful, enormous world this is!""We were supposed to go somewhere and do something!""I'm loving the angle that we're taking here!""It's a heap of Orc corpses!""Ah, all the Quest rings, I've been looking forward to this!""So clearly I'm going to do a lot of just wandering around and killing stuff!"We mostly discussed Lore pertaining to the Drúedain when we had the opportunity.
Gondor Gambolling 56: In which Gryfflets knowledge of the city is put to the sternest test yet Signum University 2023-08-02 | Gryfflet and Mithrandir have apparently been admiring the former's new outfit earned last session, but now they need to venture into the Old Archives to find out what is going on with Gothmog. We already knew that he had previously been known as Mordirith, in which guise we thought we defeated him in Angmar, and before that as Eärnur, King of Gondor. Mithrandir is worried that he might attempt to reclaim the throne and cautions us to silence on the matter. On our return Gryfflet is summoned by Denethor who reveals that he has been using the Anor Stone, a Palantir: he shows us Frodo apparently captive in the Tower of Cirith Ungol and other evidence that leads him to suppose that Sauron has the Ring. Denethor having sunk into despair, Mithrandir sends us to rally the courage of the besieged city. Ingold, whom we last saw at the North Gate, needs help rounding up his men and returning their discarded weapons: some are more amenable than others, and we discover what befell the missing Barathant. Rathon, the Warden of the Wells, wants us to dowse the flames caused by the enemy artillery which grants us the chance to peruse our list of Lore Questions and pick a fun one. We also bump into Forlong and Duinhir who are themselves busy helping. Finally Lamlor, the Captain of Tidings, is worried by the activities of the Withered Tree, the treacherous group we have previously encountered. His colleague Húrin, Warden of the Keys, has new pass-words for us to promulgate to the appropriate guards, and Gryfflet is temporarily hopeful that these might prove more secure than the last set, but at least we have more time for another Lore Question. This accomplished we proceed to challenge supporters of the Withered Tree who are no more logical or proficient than those met previously. Gryfflet reports to Lamlor in time for the end of the session: next time, Epic Battles!"In Gondor they wear no pants…""That's pretty cool! I love that reference!""What I'm saying is, one way or the other, Eärnur is a goner!""Tell us what you really think, Gandalf!""Who thought that was a good idea?""Did you read the terms and conditions really carefully?""This guy's still reading a book!""It's a play on words that never gets old!""That's dedication!"Lore discussed this week mostly concerned Ents, but we also mentioned in passing the composition of Appendix A and the process of wraithification.

Vampirism in Emily Brontës Wuthering Heights Signum University 2023-08-02 | This recording from August 1st, 2023.Signum MA student Gina Petrone will present her thesis “‘Let Me In!’ Vampirism in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Gina’s thesis supervisor, Dr. Sara Brown.AbstractIn Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights, scholars have studied the gothic elements of the story, but only in recent years has the idea of vampirism emerged. Cathy, a strong-willed and spirited girl, wants nothing more than to live her life at Wuthering Heights with her soulmate, Heathcliff. However, it is impossible for the two to be together in Victorian society. Cathy is from a respectable family, and Heathcliff is treated as no better than a servant after the death of Cathy’s father. Both monstrous in their own rights, Cathy and Heathcliff undergo transformations in order to become vampiric. I explore the transformation process of both characters and argue the possibility of traditional vampirism. I also argue the vampiric qualities of both characters due to their souls being halved by Cathy’s death. As such, this research connects Brontë’s own criticism of Victorian society to the meaning behind her characters in Wuthering Heights.About the PresenterGina Petrone (she/her) is an English teacher for both middle and high school students. The discussion will be facilitated by Patrick’s thesis supervisor, Dr. Paul Peterson.AbstractThe Old English Rhyming Poem is one of the stranger and more overlooked entries in the lexicon of OE poetry, often regarded as interesting but flawed and incoherent due to its intensive pursuit of rhyme. As the poem is both unique and highly allusive, critical analyses have focused on the potential inspirations for (and origins of) the poem, and have attempted to make sense of the work’s convoluted grammar and syntax. This thesis examines three related questions concerning the poem’s origin, translation, and interpretation, and in conversation with critical analyses and previous editions of the poem presents a new argument for the inspiration of the poem coming from Welsh poetry. This thesis also makes the case that treating the poem as a riddle in addition to an elegy can make greater sense of some of the passages that earlier critics have found most vexing in the past.About the PresenterPatrick Lyon is a graduate of the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame and has presented on topics of Tolkien Studies, Homeric epics, and Black Speech at various Mythmoots; he also writes freelance Movie and TV Features for collider.com. The discussion will be facilitated by Christoph’s thesis supervisor, Dr. Paul Peterson.AbstractAn Old Norse-Icelandic genre that has long been relegated to the background of scholarly studies is the genre of riddarasögur. With the largest amount of surviving manuscripts, this genre was very popular among audiences of medieval Norse sagas. With 89 different manuscripts, Mágus saga jarls has the most attested witnesses of all riddarasögur. The saga exists in two recessions: a younger and an older one. The earliest surviving manuscript of the younger and longer recension is the subject of this edition. It is known under the shelfmark AM 567 XVII ß 4to and was written between c. 1390 and 1410. This version of the saga has been rendered into a three-layer transcription – facsimile, diplomatic, normalized – and is fully compliant with version 3 of Medieval Nordic Text Archive (Menota) standards.About the PresenterChristoph Schabert is a development operations engineer currently living and working in Germany. Growing up he loved reading fantasy and was always intrigued with old languages, which only deepened during his studies of Old Norse with Signum. Gondor Gambolling 55: In which Gryfflet shows the quality of his mercy Signum University 2023-07-06 | Gryfflet has been poised ready to visit Ingold at the North-gate to the Rammas Echor and takes off at a gallop. Ingold needs help with some new enemies who have shown up, and to contact his man in Crithost, so Gryfflet sets off across the fields to meet up with some old friends and slaughter them while we consider an interesting Lore question. This lasts us until we reach Crithost where Ingold's man Barathant waits until we reach a natural pause, whereupon he asks us to go forth and slaughter some more: once we have done that, he asks us to retrieve two of his scouts who are in danger of stranding themselves, which goes much more smoothly than anticipated. Pausing only for a little more slaughter we return to Crithost to lead Barathant to safety but we are forced to return to the city before his arrival. We report our success to Prince Imrahil who sends us to talk with Mithrandir and a couple of other local worthies. One of the latter is Echadon, Captain of the Garrison, who is worried about the morale of his troops and enlists Gryfflet's help to bolster it: this involves inspiring despairing citizens and destroying seditious posters, and then telling stirring tales of bravery to some unhappy guards. The other is Arodor, Chief Scribe, who needs our help surveying the stocks of food. Having checked in with the Master Foodmonger and the Warden of the Stores, Gryfflet sets off to the Upper and Lower Stores to take inventory. The Upper Stores seem to be in perfect order but there is a discrepancy at the Lower Stores. Gryfflet takes pity on the hapless Dírion who has been taking care of his family, and the problem is officially blamed on the rats which we have already encountered on previous visits. A lengthy pause ensues while we discuss a Lore question, and a briefer pause while Gryfflet admires his latest outfit, and there is just enough time to return to Mithrandir's side in preparation for next week's session."I was lazy and didn't go all the way to the camp, bet you that's my problem!""How many times have I killed you?""Stupid Warg, you're in the way!""Stop rubber-banding for a second!""That Warg-rider must be blind as a bat! Don't mind us, you just wander past!""Targeting everyone except the dude hitting me with an axe…"This session we discussed the metre of the "Oliphaunt" poem recited by Sam Gamgee, revisited the knotty problem of how much Gandalf knew about Bilbo's Ring and when, and considered where the Dwarves disposed of their rubble.

Gondor Gambolling 54: In which brave Sir Gryfflet neither chickens out nor runs away. Signum University 2023-06-19 | (Although his kneecaps do take a beating)Gryfflet has been amusing himself awaiting our return by harassing some poor bystander who is no doubt relieved when we enter the Houses of Healing to hand in the supplies we scavenged. Gryfflet decides that while he's on the sixth circle he will follow Forlong's request to find out what happened to Hirluin's old flame Laranís who is no longer in the city. This reminds Forlong of his wife and daughters, so he sends us to fetch his locket which contains pictures of the latter. At this point Gryfflet decides that the moment has come: he will carry a Chicken to the Prow and hurl it off as requested, which does mean that he has to run all the way without resorting to borrowing a horse. Overcome by curiosity he follows the Chicken which proves temporarily fatal but he does get an Achievement even if the Chicken seem singularly unimpressed. He returns to the gambling soldiers who posed the challenge only to find that they have a fresh one, considerably more risky. Gryfflet sets off to find the ingredients for "rotgut" which sounds disgusting but he succeeds not only in drinking it but also in passing the ensuing test, and the effects wear off in due course. Forlong's locket is in his quarters in the Citadel as promised and one final glass of wine heralds the completion of this lengthy Quest at long last, meaning that Gryfflet has completed all available side-quests in Minas Tirith. Gandalf, known here as Mithrandir, has been awaiting this development with unusual patience since to the surprise of nobody he has a list of people for us to encourage. First up is Peregrin Took who has arranged a picnic on the Prow if we can fetch the supplies. Othnar the Doorward welcomes us to the Dome of the Sun where the Council have been holding a rather messy meeting, so we help tidy up and distribute copies of today's resolutions. On the way he picks up the picnic basket which requires immediate action so we repair to the Prow for some Hobbit companionship for which Pippin is profoundly grateful, taking the chance to unburden himself of some of his worries. Gryfflet resumes his deliveries which takes him to the Soldiers' Tier and the "Mûmak and Keep" tavern where Derufin and Duilin have been practising. Their father is not happy with the situation so they ask us to plead with him on their behalf. He is initially resistant but succumbs to their enthusiasm and joins in the practice. Gryfflet polishes off his deliveries and returns to Mithrandir for further instruction. He wants us to help Prince Imrahil who is waiting by the Main Gate so Gryfflet hurls himself once more off the Prow in a fit of excessive efficiency. We have just enough time to find out what Imrahil wants before the end of the session: he will have to wait because the next session won't be until after Mythmoot X."Menial work still needs to be done!""Oh man, I've got a timer! Yikes!""Thank you for your patience, Chicken!""Oh dear, it's a drinking contest again!""Be right back, Gandalf!""I gotta tell you though, that yellow is not doing it for you!"There wasn't much time for Lore Discussion this week but we found time to discuss Aragorn's exploits under the name of "Thorongil" and their consequent impact.
Gondor Gambolling 53: In which Gryfflet de-beards the Sûhalar in their dens Signum University 2023-06-17 | Gryfflet has spent his time pending our return in the company of the White Tree considering his next steps. After consulting with Gandalf he decides to polish off his other outstanding quests before returning to the main story. Captain Ormatar apparently needs some help so Gryfflet sets off to find brothers Beregond and Iorlas who have been given some somewhat menial tasks so obviously they need the assistance of a convenient Hobbit. He is not expecting the kitchen workers to ask for a demonstration of his fighting technique but they are grateful for his efforts. Iorlas is less grateful for his task clearing up towels in the guesthouse baths and Gryfflet gathers that not all is well between the brothers. This is confirmed when they have an argument on the prow of the city, but they are able to calm each other down and Gryfflet covers for them with the Captain. Consulting his to-do list once more Gryfflet decides that it is time to leave the city in search of sundry items both literal and figurative which allows us to explore some Lore. (It also allows Gryfflet to complete all the local Explorer Deeds which makes the Professor very happy even if he does have to revisit Osgiliath.) On returning to the city he visits Forlong and his friends who wanted to examine the enemies' beards to determine their heritage and although the result is inconclusive the friends agree to disagree. Forlong reminisces about his courtship of his wife and recalls a girl who fancied his friend Hirluin. Gryfflet is despatched to find news of her although Hirluin is not convinced of the wisdom of such a venture. On the way Gryfflet drops by the Forges of Cirion to deposit some of his spoils, an improbable amount of scrap metal, which is received gratefully by the smiths. His next visit is to the Players' Tier where the poet Durbethir has been awaiting inspiration, and indeed produces a "song for war" that we take a little time to appreciate. There is just enough time to return to the Sixth Tier before the end of the session."Oh, I see, you're going to Tom Sawyer me into doing it for you!""Now that is a fireplace!""Oh, shh! There's a Mûmak sneaking up on us!""Alright, I'll just go to Osgiliath!""Oh good, useful barricades, that's what I'm all about!""There's more I could say but then I'd be super late!"Lore discussed this week concerned the Three Rings of the Elves, their association with various elements or realms of nature, and how JRRT apparently changed his mind over the years.
Gondor Gambolling 52: In which Gryfflet goes unto the breach once more Signum University 2023-06-17 | Gryfflet and Bergil have been waiting for Landath to return with the candles but their patience runs out so Gryfflet goes in search of the errant child. A grouchy chandler is soon placated so the children decide to start their celebration without waiting for the final two of their number who have the farthest to come. They have just enough time to reassure young Mídion that hope is not lost when Gelwen, one of the missing pair, bursts in with bad news: there are goblins in the Cisterns along with a mysterious lady and her still-missing friend Glatham. Bergil and Gryfflet accompany her on the rescue mission, which is somewhat complicated when the game glitches—twice—but we persevere and eventually defeat all of the goblins, including their captain. The mysterious lady, one Raenemel, requests a meeting to explain her presence. First of all Gryfflet needs to block off the breach in the Cisterns through which the goblins have been arriving which goes considerably more smoothly. We then go for a walk with Raenemel who reveals that she has been the source of the stuff hidden in the children's "finding place": having been governess to Boromir and Faramir she had decided to guard the children from the shadows but her mind has been changed. At this point Gryfflet decides that it is time to visit the Citadel, assuming that he can recall the ridiculously simple passwords: he is not impressed with the quality of the last password but he is able to achieve consolation by collecting more plaques and statues. He also visits the last Warden and Captain on his lists and travels the length of the Prow of Minas Tirith to sit on the bench at the end. This leaves only a handful of statues to find which is hampered by the Professor suffering an Internet outage so once the final statue is located we decide to return to the Citadel in preparation for next week's session."I don't do the Slayer Deeds and stuff like that, there have to be some limits!""Gryfflet would never condone that kind of behaviour!""How did I know? Oh, somehow I knew!""We can live with that…well…we can, you can't, but that's OK!""For a second I thought that was a smiley face!""Hey, why are you wearing a mask now? You weren't wearing a mask before!""Whatever else might be said of her, she is an indefatigable stroller!""I can be an infinite pack-rat to the end, and Gryfflet will live happily ever after!""Sorry, there's a thunderstorm coming in and my power just flickered!""He's so stealthy, he reminds me of…a Mûmak!"We had no time for any Lore discussion this week and only managed a brief mention of the upcoming Mythmoot which will include the now-traditional LOTRO marathon.

Gondor Gambolling 51: In which Gryfflet is not impressed with the security arrangements. Signum University 2023-06-02 | Gryfflet has been keeping the Lords Forlong, Hirluin and Neldir company while they drink so he is not entirely sorry when they ask him to find out whether there is anything they should be doing in preparation for the imminent hostilities. When told that they just need to be ready to move when needed, they decide that Gryfflet should investigate certain of the foe who appear to be related to Dwarves, by dint of collecting their beards. Adding that to the list of things to do when he ventures outside the walls, Gryfflet heads back to the Hall of Air to deliver the instruments he collected. The musicians have negotiated their way into a better venue so we head to the Blue Theatre to help the performance. Pausing only to take stock of our progress, Gryfflet heads up to the Sixth Tier while we respond to a Lore Question: on his arrival he is less than impressed with the quality of the password he is taught. Young Bereneth has been waiting to visit her father in the Houses of Healing which are very grand indeed, and Gryfflet is accosted by a Healer who needs him to gather some herbs when we venture out of the city. In the meantime, Bereneth's father's healer requests our aid tending to the wounded so we fetch them some flowers and visit Shadowfax in the nearby Stables and the model city in the Dome of the Sun. Bereneth leads us back to the Old Guesthouse on the lowest tier where Bergil has been waiting patiently to invite us to a feast, but we need to fetch some drinks and snacks as our contribution, which in turn leads us into conflict with the local vermin. One of the children has gone in search of candles and not returned but there is not time before the end of the session so we leave that for next time."Maybe I'm not so close to the end of this quest-line as I thought I was!""Hope I'm not going to break in on anybody embarrassingly!""I have to admit, I expected it to go horribly!""Unfortunately, Gryfflet was buried in concrete: the end!""Don't jump down the well, that's not how we behave!""I'll whack them over the head, you shave their beards!"We briefly touched on the subject of various audiobooks of Tolkien's works and how he developed the geography of Middle-earth; apropos of the latter someone had submitted a question about the Great East Road.
Gondor Gambolling 50: In which Gryfflet is stayed neither by snow, rain, heat, nor gloom of night. Signum University 2023-06-02 | Gryfflet is ready to dive straight back into his tangled weave of errands, picking up sundry items for poetic inspiration as well as seeking information about Authlin the Minstrel on behalf of Lord Forlong. He also returns to the children at the Old Guesthouse where Bergil's friend Landath has been fretting over the undelivered letter we found the session before last, and Bereneth is worried about her wounded father. Pausing only to drop off some gathered rations, Gryfflet returns to the Merry Swan to report his progress to Lords Forlong and Hirluin. They are reminiscing about old triumphs and want Gryfflet to retrieve one of their trophies. First of all, however, he needs to deal with Landath's letter, which needs to be resealed and delivered to Rhofin the Smith who we track down in the Forges of Cirion. Waiting for him to fulfil the request in the letter allows us to explore the Forges in more depth than our previous fleeting visit, and it takes a little longer than Gryfflet would prefer for us to be able to return Landath to the Old Guesthouse so that we can advance to the next Tier where the password does not impress him as particularly secure but the view from the walls is spectacular. He meets up with the Cloudyhead Players, last seen on the first tier, who are sizing up the Hall of Air, an outdoor theatre whose acoustics are not satisfactory: neither are their instruments so we are instructed to find new ones. Having added that to his list, Gryfflet confronts one last suspicious character and inspects the Upper Stores, the Old Archives—which have been built into the prow of the city, the Houses of Lore—where we find Forlong's trophy, and the Thirsty Seer tavern—which completes the set. We bring the trophy to Forlong who has the genius idea to have Hirluin demonstrate his knife-throwing skills with predictable results; subsequent reminiscences about Thorongil go much better. Gryfflet takes stock of the situation and the time remaining, and decides to tidy up his list of errands rather than provoke Forlong into more lengthy exposition. He therefore goes in search of some fancy musical instruments for the band and returns the stolen goods recovered from the suspicious characters, then returns to Forlong's side ready for the next session."Clearly the best sweaty rag in the city!""It's like a kind of miracle!""Oh, I see…there are particular paving stones I have to stand on?""It's time, Fifth Circle baby!""That is the worst password in the entire city!""Good to see that research continues even if the city is under attack!""Hey look, it's Elendil, I once carried that statue in my pocket!""I blame it on the cummerbunds!""Yes, my longest-standing side-quest!"Lore discussion this week was mostly related to Lord Forlong's reminiscences until a chance remark gave us the chance to answer a very old question about Female Dwarves.
