Joshua Norton, who was later known as "Emperor Norton", was a business man from South Africa who came to America in the 1860s.

Long story short, he found quick success with multiple real-estate properties he was able to find at an auction, and a rice mill he owned.

When he made a risky move with his rice mill, he lost everything-- however what he did AFTER this was something nobody could have expected next. LOL.
