Entering The Worlds Narrowest City Drew Binsky 2024-10-19 | Welcome to Yanjin, China - the narrowest city in the world! This place is AWESOME!More than 100,000 people call this unique city home, living in high-rise buildings along a narrow strip of land between steep mountains and the polluted brown River. It’s truly mind-blowing to see how Yanjin has adapted to its natural environment, with its residents making the most of every inch of space available. The towering mountains in every direction make it feel as though the city is trapped in a stunning, yet challenging, landscape. In all of my travels, I've never seen anything like this!Also - this is my first time visiting rural China, and I have to admit, it’s been a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of massive cities like Beijing or Shanghai. The slower pace, tight-knit community, and the way life carries on here, despite the obvious limitations, have been truly eye-opening. Mainland China is full of surprises, and Yanjin is just one of the many hidden gems that I've discovered on this 18 day trip. Entering the Slum that Japan Doesnt Want You to See Drew Binsky 2024-09-07 | Japan has one of the lowest homelessness rates in the world, with less than 0.003% of its population living on the streets. This is a testament to the country's robust social programs and unique cultural approach to addressing homelessness.But there is one slum, called Sanya, where you can find almost all of Tokyo's homeless - and my mission in this video was to go there to learn about why this place still exists, who lives on these streets, and what the future holds for such a contrasting place. Japan is truly one of my favorite countries on earth, and after 11 trips to this island nation, I have to admit that I've never seen streets like what I just saw in Sanya. It's a gritty neighborhood historically known as a hangout for day laborers and marginalized communities. Nowadays, you can find hundreds of homeless men wandering around a dilapidated park, playing board games, and sleeping in makeshift tents. The surrounding alleyways are dotted with ultra-budget hostels for $10/night (the cheapest rooms in the city, but not a place I'd recommend to sleep). The overall experience of walking around Sanya is just bizarre, and I think it's important that we don't turn a blind eye on the homeless -- even in a country like Japan. I originally intended to only make this story about Sanya, but after learning about yakuza (gangster) culture, I went on a separate mission to meet a real yakuza member in Fukuoka. I couldn't believe the things he told me which you will find out in the second half of this video!I'd love to get your thoughts on this darker side of Japan - did you know that homelessness and gangster life existed here? Entering Americas Only Polygamist Town Drew Binsky 2024-06-22 | This is one of the strangest stories I've ever told, and ironically, it takes place in my home state of Arizona. The story takes place in a small rural town called Colorado City, where the FLDS church rules the land (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) -- And I was guided by former member, Sam, who runs the amazing YouTube channel @GrowingUpinPolygamy.In Colorado City, it's acceptable for men to be polygamists, or have multiple wives. Many have 3 or 4 wives, but the ruler of the community who is a God-like figure named Warren Jeffs, had 85 wives until he was thrown in prison on a life sentence for sexual assault on minors (among other charges). Through Sam, I was able to get special access to this community and the things that I experienced will leave you speechless. With little money in her bank account, she found a safe place to live at this internet cafe, and now she makes $1,300 a month by working at a hostess bar.
