Listening to Plague Mass for the first time - A challenge response to Garage Geek Guz69 2024-07-14 | I came across Diamanda Galás work many years ago, probably in the early 90s by the time “Plague Mass” live album was released. I think I heard a few songs from "The Singer" album, but to be honest I don’t remember very well. One thing is for sure though, she had a very unique and exquisite approach to music. Of course, I wasn’t as open minded as today, so I never bought anything from her or even kept track of her work over the years. Last week David from Garage Geek channel @garagegeek4863 challenged me to review one of her albums (I gave him a Sleep Token’s album to do the same) and I am glad that he did because I was finally able to research more deeply about her career and now I can appreciate her work as a whole. I came across some footage (Slovenia, 1993) available on YouTube, and I actually ended up editing parts of her live performance over of my reaction while listening to “There are no more tickets to the funeral” for the first time. It was impossible to sync properly cause her performance is improvised. I have to say that I wouldn’t be able to do justice for a “Plague Mass” full album review, specially because of the experimental nature of her work, not to mention my basic English to describe such avant-garde kind of music, so I decide to use Chat GPT 4.0 to do some of that for me while I concentrated on her delivery as a first listen reaction. One thing is for sure though, been able to know more about her background & trajectory and watch her live performance made the listening experience much more coherent and pleasurable. The social/political context of her work is something to not be despised, otherwise it would be pointless.
