Mad Keys (Brandon McCadney) is a prolific music producer, beat maker, keyboardist, and violinist. Influenced by artists as diverse as D'Angelo, Herbie Hancock, Flying Lotus, J. Dilla and Kaytranada, his music is a winning combition of hip-hop, soul, jazz and a little bit of house.

Mad Keys on In Orbit:
This piece came together organically after scrolling through ROLI Studio sounds. I usually do a lot of my production early in the morning, so changing the lighting in my room played a major role in the inspiration for the track. In the evening I’m slowing down for the day, so a more downtempo tune felt so good in the moment.

For the intro textures, I used a ROLI Studio patch called “Ivory Coast Koralimba” — then automated the cutoff and resonate frequencies to add more movement and roll off some of its initial plucking sound. When the beat comes in after the reverse triangle, I used another preset called “Oceanic Harp”. It's unlike any other sound I’ve heard. It has this nice harmonic sound after you release the keys at certain velocities, which gives the song a unique characteristic.

Semitone Legato is an inbuilt Seaboard RISE 2 feature that lets you create astonishingly expressive tracks. Toggle it on and off while playing different parts and presets on the Keywave2 surface — and unlock the full potential of an MPE instrument able to master any musical style.

WHAT IS SEMITONE LEGATO?

Semitone Legato is a RISE 2 setting perfect for playing luscious, fluid leads and shimmering vibrato. In this setting, pitchbend between each note — the Glide Dimension of Touch — is set to maximum. Make sure it's switched on if you're recording a richly expressive or microtonal part, such as a bowed-string instrument melody.

Semitone Legato is on by default when the Glide Fader is set to 100%. You can adjust it on the RISE 2 control panel, or within your included ROLI Dashboard software.

PLAYING WITHOUT SEMITONE LEGATO

For Seaboard parts where you need plenty of distinct tones and semitones — for instance a melody line with many chromatic notes or a jazzy chord accompaniment — it’s often better not to activate Semitone Legato. As the Glide Dimension of Touch is turned down, each keywave will behave closer to distinct keyboard or piano keys, with less sensitivity to gliding, vibrato gestures.

To turn Semitone Legato off or down, simply adjust the Glide Fader below 100% on the side panel or in ROLI Dashboard. Don’t forget, you can adjust Glide in real time with the side panel Touch Fader — even mid-performance.

Gil Assayas — better known as GLASYS — has musical talent to spare. The keyboardist, composer and vocalist not only produces his own singular tracks, influenced by classical, jazz and video-game scores, but he's also played alongside diverse and legendary artists including Todd Rundgren and T-Pain.

I’ve always enjoyed creating with self-imposed limitations - for example, only using one instrument or one synth for the entire track. In this case, I wanted to showcase ROLI’s great software so I limited myself to only ROLI sound libraries: Equator2, ROLI Studio Drums and ROLI Studio Player. I programmed a few of my own sounds and also tweaked a bunch of presets — there’s tons of inspiring sounds in there. As a synth programmer the UI of Equator2 is very intuitive, so I could jump right into sound design.

The track itself is in an odd time signature (⅞) and doesn’t really have a clear melody. I started with a bassline and built the arrangement one layer at a time.
