Cyber-Lip on the Neo Geo CD is an early run-and-gun shooter from SNK, released in 1990. Often compared to games like Contra, it delivers straightforward side-scrolling action with a sci-fi twist, but it doesn’t quite reach the same level of polish as its inspirations.
The gameplay is familiar: run, jump, shoot, and take down waves of enemies while navigating platform-heavy stages. You’ll pick up different weapons along the way, ranging from spread shots to more focused firepower, giving you some flexibility in combat. The controls are responsive enough, but the overall feel is a bit stiff compared to more refined run-and-gun titles.
Where Cyber-Lip struggles most is in its pacing and enemy design. Enemies often appear suddenly, sometimes from off-screen, leading to cheap hits that feel more frustrating than challenging. The level design can also feel uneven, with difficulty spikes that don’t always feel fair. It leans heavily into that early arcade design philosophy of memorization over reaction.
Visually, the game shows its age as an early Neo Geo release. The sprites are large and colorful, but the animation is somewhat limited compared to later titles on the system. The environments have a decent sci-fi aesthetic, but they lack the detail and variety seen in more polished Neo Geo games. The Neo Geo CD version does improve the audio with CD-quality music, which helps enhance the overall presentation.
Another downside is repetition. Enemy types and environments don’t evolve much, and the gameplay loop can start to feel monotonous after a while. Like other Neo Geo CD games, loading times between stages can also break up the action.
Overall, Cyber-Lip is a decent but flawed early entry in the Neo Geo library. It has the foundation of a solid run-and-gun shooter, but it lacks the refinement and balance needed to stand alongside the best in the genre. It’s more of a curiosity for retro fans than a must-play title.
Score: 6/10
