Would black people be included?People who migrate to the Western Cape in search of a better life for themselves and their families must be applauded and not criticised. Cape Independence is based upon the democratic will of all Western Cape citizens regardless of their race, religion, or culture. Asked by Dr. Corne Mulder of Freedom Front Plus (Vryheidsfront Plus) which includes freedom to address socio-economic issues of South Africa like unemployment, poverty, and crime | Cape Town Press Club.A referendum is simply the expression of the democratic will of the Western Cape people and is not the end goal of Cape Independence but rather the mechanism by which the people can demonstrate their wish for Cape Independence. The end goal is Cape Independence itself and with it political, cultural, and ideological self-determination for the Western Cape, which will allow the people of Western Cape to meaningfully address the problems of poverty, unemployment, and crime.The 'Referendums Act' is unconstitutional and needs to be amended to bring it in line with the South African and Western Cape constitutions. This was a question posed to Phil Craig of the Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) at the Cape Town Press Club.Section 127(2)(f) of the South African constitution, and section 37(2)(f) of the Western Cape constitution, authorize the premier of the Western Cape to call a provincial referendum. It isn't explicit who must conduct the referendum, but it is a reasonable assumption that the Electoral Commission of South Africa (more commonly known as the Independent Electoral Commission or IEC for short) would conduct such a referendum. Phil Craig from the Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) was asked this at the Cape Town Press Club, as have many others on social media.Orania is a town in South Africa that was established to preserve the white Afrikaans culture. It is an example of cultural self-determination as envisaged in section 235 of the South African constitution. It has attracted much attention because, to all intents and purposes, it practices racial segregation.Phil Craig is emphatic that Cape Independence is very different from Orania. Cape Independence is racially inclusive and based upon the collective democratic will of the Western Cape people, regardless of their race, religion, or culture.Whilst Orania is an example of internal self-determination (it remains a part of South Africa), Cape Independence would be an example of external self-determination (it would no longer be a part of South Africa). The process by which it would be achieved is achieved called secession.Phil Craig was also asked, if you are non-racial, then why do you talk about the 'Coloured' people? (Coloured is the official government racial classification for the Western Cape's brown people, who were also historically referred to as Cape Coloureds).Out of empathy, he responded, pointing out that because most 'Coloured' people live in the Western Cape, they have suffered the most under the South African government policy of Affirmative Action.
