Through all their major titles- Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Sekiro and now Elden Ring, subtle references to Japanese folklore and mythology add interest and flavour to characters, plotlines and design choices.
In this video, we'll be looking at some of their more inspired choices, including references to the Japanese Imperial Regalia, the colourful Yokai tradition, Shintoism, dragons and more!

エルデンリングFair Criticisms - Shadow of the ErdtreeErik2024-08-22 | Shadow of the Erdtree is a fantastic DLC which expands on Elden Ring without repeating its worst mistakes, but it has some flaws of its own too.
Many people have noted the lack of cutscenes before important new bosses like Rellana or Romina, and the final boss fight featuring Miquella with Radahn (instead of Godwyn as many had hoped) has been controversial for its difficulty and its lore implications.
In this video in which I take a brief respite from lore content, I'll be sharing more a personal view on what worked and didn't for me as a player, and I invite you to join the discussion and tell me how you'd have improved things, especially the ending.

In this video, join me as I look at the historical inspirations behind the design- everything from the Tower of Babel to the game's very cosmology, pick apart what we know about their function and what becoming a God really means, and finally discuss how it all makes sense of the plot of Elden Ring.

This was started before as part of a video looking at characters' names, but @VaatiVidya new video on the storyline of the dragons has inspired me to revisit it.
As always, FromSoft are uncompromising in their commitment to well-rounded lore, and the dragons' names are a mix of classical and mythological references carefully chosen to subtly reinforce what we see upfront in game.
No doubt we will see the same attention to detail in the upcoming DLC, but until then let me know what Elden Ring lore you'd like me to look at next!Lies of P Lore: Antonia #liesofp #lore #gaming #italy #pinocchio #soulslikeErik2024-01-14 | A very quick look at the lore and background of Antonia and Champion Victor in Lies of P. What's going on? Why do some appear as eyes? Why, for that matter, are there so many body parts hanging around in general?
Here, I look at the real life origins of runes, their journey through popular culture and the ideas that inform how Elden Ring was put together.
What do you think? Will we see more development of runes or great runes with the DLC Shadow of the Erdtree? Does the system work? Or is it all a messy clash of ideas?Bitesize lore: AlexanderErik2023-08-05 | Alexander and the living jars are a clever mixture of western and Japanese cultural ideas. In this video, we have an introduction to Yokai, the colourful body of Japanese apparitions, ghosts and monsters that inspire so many FromSoft characters and enemies. Elden Ring, Dark Souls and Sekiro are full of both traditional and reimagined Yokai.
What enemies do you want to see explained next? Which Yokai do you want to see in the DLC?
