Secrets of the Voynich Manuscript hochelaga 2022-06-24 | The Voynich Manuscript is well-deserving of the title “the most mysterious book of all time”.This fifteenth-century text is full of weird drawings: from alien plants with no biological counterpart to miniature people operating an array of unknown machines. And then there’s the writing: it’s composed in a mystery language, complete with a unique alphabet and grammar. To this day, no one has definitively solved this ancient code.In this video, I want to investigate the world’s most mysterious book, and explore the secrets of the Voynich Manuscript. From its mysterious history, passing from the hands of scholars, emperors and book dealers; to its illustrations, and how they have much in common with early medical textbooks. In this video, I'll explore just that, and create a neat new "Bible Accurate" map in the process!These biblical lands stretch over a massive geographical area. From the rich African Kingdoms of Kush to the exotic maritime ports of ancient Ophir, the biblical writers knew of regions that lay on the periphery of the known world. When used as a historical document, the Bible is a snapshot in time into the surprising world of early trade. Finding real-world locations in the Bible reveals how connected the ancient world was. Is your country there? If not, should your country be on there? I’d be curious to hear whether the eastern land of Sinim mentioned in Isaiah 49:12, could be a reference to China.A few notes about the map. When the Bible was written, "countries" as we know them today didn’t even exist. Plus, there’s no one version of it that all Christians can agree on (although that would be nice). I am using the NRSV. What's more, I have taken Scythia to mean Bulgaria and Romania (as in Scythia Minor). I ought to have included Ukraine into this mix too but hey, Scythia has always been notoriously difficult to define! Also, Arabic not Aramaic.I hope you enjoyed this video, I enjoyed making it. Like it or not, God has a death toll. Has anyone gone through the Bible and counted it? Combing through the Bible and calculating God’s kill count culminates with a frightening number in the millions. The real number, including various estimations, is much higher...This sometimes violent depiction of God has always fascinated me. It’s so different to the peaceful God of the New Testament. Psychedelics in Christian Art hochelaga 2022-11-17 | For many years now, people have noticed psychedelic mushrooms throughout religious art. Often in scenes from the Bible. In fact, across medieval artworks, you’ll seem to find these “mushrooms” everywhere. Like the Plaincourault fresco, that 12th-century wall painting of the Garden of Eden. It’s a bizarre image, the tree of knowledge looks like a giant fungus. Then there are the visions of Hildegard von Bingen with divine cities in the sky and incomprehensible beings that take the appearance of angels. Others are abstract geometric shapes: rings, circlets, and sacred diagrams.Could artworks like these reveal hidden truths about Christianity and psychedelics? Or is there another explanation? The Quest To Become A Freemason hochelaga 2022-08-30 | The Freemasons are a secretive organisation cloaked in mystery. To some, they are a cult or a dark brotherhood behind world events. To others, they are misunderstood, and far less mysterious than conspiracy theories would have us believe. What do we really know about them? There's only one way to find out: to try to join them. From visiting the Grand Lodge in London to learning the Rituals and finally making an application; becoming a fully-fledged Freemason is harder than I thought. Longer too! But that's where a not-so-secret Facebook group comes in...From my investigation, I do not believe that they are a malicious organisation of Satan worshiping cultists. Instead, it had more in common with an upper-class gentleman’s club. The Freemasons have their secrets for sure, but none that are particularly scandalous. The reality of the Freemasons is that it’s a medieval self-help group, with a bunch of rituals that you need to memorise. The Gospel of Jesus Wife hochelaga 2022-08-12 | What if Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, what if they have descendants that live amongst us? This idea forms the basis of the Da Vinci Code, and is a central theme of the gnostic gospels. But it’s not just the realm of fiction or conspiracy. You see, there’s an ancient Christian text that seems to confirm this theory. It’s a tiny fragment of papyrus with an astonishing revelation – that Jesus had a wife.It had the potential to rewrite everything we knew about the life of Jesus. If it was genuine of course. And that’s where things get a little complicated. You see, (*spoilers*) the Gospel of Jesus' Wife was a hoax, a forgery, a fake. From the odd handwriting to lifting text from the gospel of Thomas, it was quickly deemed fraudulent. Despite this, it was a catalyst for some exciting conversations. For example, how much do we really know about the life of Jesus? All we have are the New Testament texts, and a few other sources, but they only really cover the final few years of his life. Ultimately, we know very little about Jesus as a historical figure. So for now, the mystery of whether he had a wife is ongoing.I hope you enjoy this one. The Museum of Lost Souls hochelaga 2022-07-29 | The little museum of purgatory lies in the heart of Rome. It's full of ghostly artefacts, reported to be messages from beyond the grave: from dark handprints seared onto wood, to phantom markings etched in prayer books. It has to be one of the most disturbing museums around, but why does exist, what’s it for? And how do we know that any of these objects are indeed genuine? Let's investigate these ghoulish exhibits in this episode of Strange Christian Art.We'll also explore the concept of purgatory, for those who are unfamiliar. Another writer who wrote a lot about Purgatory was the medieval poet Dante Alighieri. In his sequel to Inferno, he envisioned Purgatory as a giant mountain made up of layers of terraces. Each represents one of the Seven Deadly Sins. In later centuries, Purgatory fell out of favour, especially in branches of Christianity like Protestantism. The Little Book of Cosmic Horrors hochelaga 2022-05-19 | The Augsburg Book of Miracles (aka. The Little Book of Cosmic Horrors) is a classic example of strange Christian art. It's full of visions of the Apocalypse, and God's disturbing signs throughout history. It even includes the Old Testament's weirdest scene, the vision of Ezekiel, depicting a "living creature" and an Ophanim (aka. Bible Accurate Angels).In this video, let's explore this bizarre text and figure out the meaning behind its unique contents. There are some phenomena that we can explain: from doomsday comets to sun dogs. Although many have no rational explanation. The fact that little is known about the book's origin, only adds to the mystery...Its scenes of calamity and chaos, and eerie hybrid creatures that defy logic, remind me of HP Lovecraft, whose gothic stories of dark magic and profane deities explore the fragile limits of human knowledge. The Demon Doodles of 1565 hochelaga 2022-04-20 | The Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel is a collection of 120 bizarre "demon doodles". Many of these monsters are comical, striking absurd and amusing poses. Others are a little more disturbing, with unnerving expressions and emotionless hollow faces. These sketches are so fantastically bizarre: they tap into the disturbing art of Hieronymous Bosch, and the grotesque monsters from medieval manuscripts.Curiously, there are no words to accompany these drawings, so we are left to guess their meaning. I suspect that beneath these whimsical sketches lie hidden messages that poke fun at the powers that be. From hidden jokes at the expense of the nobility and the Catholic church. Whilst I have attempted to explain the meaning of some, I’m at a loss for words with most of the others... but it's fun to guess!After a week away on vacation (it was wonderful thanks), I am back to my regular schedule. Hellmouths | Strange Christian Art hochelaga 2022-04-01 | “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here” - Dante's Inferno, Canto III.Across Christian art, the entrance to Hell is depicted as a giant mouth. A gaping set of jaws that devours the souls of the damned. These Hellmouths are everywhere, cropping up in manuscripts, prayer books, and paintings. Even in early theatre productions, where giant mechanical mouths were constructed in medieval town squares. The Christian Hellmouth is a disturbing image and a useful deterrent against wrongdoing. It appeals to a very basic human instinct: don’t get eaten. In this life, or the next. But where did this frightening image come from? Many believe that the Hellmouth has its roots in Norse mythology, With its hellish ideas of man-eating wolves and devouring dragons. It seems like Viking beliefs about the afterlife seemed to have made their way into Saxon Christianity, as seen in examples like the Gosforth Cross, and in parallels between Satan and the dragon Nidhogg. Three Headed Jesus | Strange Christian Art hochelaga 2022-03-16 | Without a doubt, the most depicted figure in art is Jesus. But have you seen him depicted as a three headed-hybrid? A strange multi-headed being with one body, three noses, and four eyes. It’s one of the most peculiar examples of Christian iconography. The seemingly paradoxical idea that one God exists as three distinct persons. These kinds of images (known as tricephalics if you want to seem smart) appear in a number of European mythologies. Gods like Janus, Lugus, Triglav, and Hecate all have three heads. Not to forget the many outside Europe too like the Hindu deity Brahma. How a British Pickle Merchant Became a Uyghur King hochelaga 2022-01-28 | "The Pickle King of Tartary" is a strange footnote in the often-turbulent history of central Asia. His real name was Khalid Sheldrake, a pickle manufacturer from London, and during the Chinese civil war he nearly became the king of Xinjiang and the Uyghur people. It's one of those obscure topics that deserve more attention...His moniker has an amusing ring to it, and when I first heard about this story thought that I’d be making a light-hearted video. But I think it’s more complex than that. And I suspect depending on your own life experiences, you’ll react to it in a number of ways. You might see Khalid Sheldrake as the charitable philanthropist and a patron of Britain’s Muslim communities. But you might also see it as a story of empires and colonies, and a naïve man at the centre of it. Is the Ark of the Covenant REALLY lost? hochelaga 2021-10-09 | According to the Hebrew Bible, the Ark of the Covenant is an ornate golden box, supposed to have housed the original ten commandments. As well as being a sacred artefact, there are several stories detailing its immense power, used by the Israelites in warfare to destroy enemy armies and flatten entire cities. However, at a certain point in the biblical account it vanishes. Never to be seen, or heard of, again.The location of this mythical Hebrew item is one of history's most enduring mysteries. Although many believe that it was destroyed when a Babylonian army besieged Jerusalem in 587 BCE, there’s evidence to suggest that it’s still out there – waiting to be found. Some say that it's hidden in a desert cave, another group says that it's housed in a chapel in Ethiopia, others say that it's held in an underground vault deep below Jerusalem.Is the Ark of the Covenant REALLY lost? The "not" is nowhere to be seen, giving perfideous readers the divine green-light to cheat to their heart's content. It was not the work of a secret society, nor a version of the original text, but a typo; and a pretty bad one at that.In this video, let's look at the collection of "Bible errata". Or as I like to call them "Biblical Bloopers". From the "Unrighteous Bible" that favours the sinners to the "Owl Bible" that speaks of a group of owl husbands. All the product of an unfortunate lack of proofreading. Cardenio: The Lost Play of Shakespeare hochelaga 2020-12-25 | The History of Cardenio is believed to be a lost play of William Shakespeare, but there lacks concrete evidence that it actually existed. Well, except for an adaptation of it known as Double Falsehood. Nowadays, it is seen to hold parts of an original script thought to have been lost to history.It's not the only Lost Play of Shakespeare out there. Some believe that there's a play out there known as 'Love's Labour's Won'. But, to my mind, the story of Cardenio and Double Falsehood makes for most complete video.I hope you enjoy this.
