This was in part sparked by a viral video on tiktok by a bookish creator named Celine, @celineistalking . I agreed with her points, and I wanted to share some of my own perspectives. In this video essay or discussion, I start off trying to understand the perspective of people who may not value reading critically or who simply don't place importance on it. I then delve into defining anti-intellectualism and talking about it in the context of the rise of short form content, surface level reviewing, problematic books, and creator/consumer responsibility.

This is where I log my reading of books by local or diasporic authors, and where you can find some great recommendations if you're looking to get into Trinidadian literature or Caribbean literature in general.
In this video, I start off by recommending two extremely compelling novels that take place in Trinidad. The first is Pleasantview by Celeste Mohammed, an enthralling story about a fictional community in Trinidad. I then recommend The Bread the Devil Knead by Lisa Allen-Agostini, a harrowing novel about a woman who is navigating an abusive relationship. This one was shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2022. The next book I recommend is The Dreaming by Andre Baghoo, a fantastic collection of short stories that explore the lives and experiences of gay men in Trinidad. It is such a fantastic and refreshingly modern piece of queer Caribbean literature.
Speaking of queer Caribbean literature, I, of course, had to highlight a few more books by Shani Mootoo. The first of which is her debut novel, Cereus Blooms at Night, a fantastic novel with dark and gothic undertones, and a writing style that will captivate you. I also mentioned her short story collection, Out on Mainstreet. Finally, I spotlighted Butterfly in the Wind by Lakshmi Persaud, a semi-autobiographical novel that takes place in the 50s and 60s.

I discuss racism, sexism, reading "agendas" and the publishing industry. I also reflect somewhat critically on myself and some of my past insecurities as a reader that led me to make choices about the books I've read and even the content I've made.

This is part two of recommending books set in Trinidad and Tobago (and its diaspora). These recommendations are all great places to start if you're looking to get into Trinidadian/Tobagonian fiction or Caribbean literature in general.
I start off with a young adult romance novel set in Tobago, Where the Rhythm Takes You by Sarah Dass. I then recommend Hungry Ghosts, Kevin Jared Hosein's recent acclaimed novel - a historical fiction thriller set in rural 1940s Trinidad. I also recommend two books set in the Trini-Canadian diaspora: Polar Vortex by Shani Mootoo and Brother by David Chariandy. Finally, I recommend two Trinidadian classics: Miguel Street by V.S. Naipaul and The Jumbie Bird by Ismith Khan.

I talked about some fantastic selections, from the booker prize nominated "My Friends" by Hisham Matar to some books by one of my favourite authors, Arundhati Roy.
Booktubers mentioned: @EricKarlAnderson and @WillowTalksBooks (whose channel name I blanked on in the video, sorry!)
Books mentioned: Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad, Sic Transit Wagon by Barbara Jenkins, The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh by Ingrid Persaud, Salt Houses by Hala Alyan, Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa, You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness and The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, My Friends by Hisham Matar, Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou.

In this video I talk about the seven books I read in August! I started the month off with Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, which I really enjoyed but which I felt could have expanded a bit more on the "woman in the attic" storyline. This is why I read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, which serves as a prequel to Jane Eyre, and is a West Indian classic.
I also read Samantha Harvey's Orbital, which is on the longlist of this year's Booker Prize. Celeste Mohammed's Pleasantview was another reading highlight this month, one of my new favourite works of Trinidadian contemporary fiction. Finally, I cap this video off with three books I borrowed from the library: Rivers Solomon's The Deep and two graphic novels which were The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen and The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.
