►First of all: I made this mechanic in Minecraft 1.13 using functions.
Link is an armor_stand with an item on his head. That item has a custom texture making it look like the Link from the original Zelda game. While walking, a timer-score is counting up and depending on that score a different item/texture is applied.
Im detecting movement and direction of the player by storing his coordinates in scoreboards (/execute store) and comparing them to the ones from the previous game tick.
The player is walking on invisible shulkers.
