Program note: Irina Ratushinskaya was a Russian poet, physicist, and dissident. She was arrested in 1982 for criticizing the Soviet Union’s human rights violations and was sentenced to hard labor in the gulag. During her imprisonment, Ratushinskaya wrote poetry onto bars of soap so that it could be memorized and quickly washed away if she was caught. International outrage and glasnost policy led to her release in 1986. She went on to write the bestselling “Grey is the Color of Hope,” an autobiographical account of her time in prison, in addition to memoirs, novels, and large collections of poetry.
I shudder to comprehend Ratushinskaya’s seven years of imprisonment. She didn’t know if she would ever be free. The picture I had in my mind when composing was a solitary prison cell with a small barred window. The high-register piano intro is meant to represent the falling snow outside, gradually building into a blizzard as the thoughts of uncertainty and hopelessness creep in.

The inspired text that I wrote is set by the choir in a quasi chant-like style at the beginning, which then transitions to a passionate funeral march.

Stepan Shchipachev (1899-1980) was an officially sanctioned Soviet poet who developed a unique voice during a time of war and industrialization. The poem “Be wise and treasure love” uses imagery of nature to highlight the relationship between humanity and the natural world. This piece was written for the 2023 Student Composer Showcase and performed at Azusa Pacific University by a student ensemble. “Be wise and treasure love” begins with a pensive piano introduction, transitioning into a canon-like layering of voices that settle on the Russian word, “lyubov’yu”—meaning with love. Section B depicts a more childlike and romanticized perspective on love and gradually climaxes into a piano interlude/waltz. At the recapitulation, the choir ends again on the word “lyubov’yu” with an even richer cluster, as if the protagonist, now matured, is leaving the scene with more questions about love than they came with.

I got to conduct it for the first time at our first Student Composer Showcase on March 30th. Not only was it magical to have my piece come to life, but hearing from the other student composers was really inspiring as well. The recording process was also an amazing learning experience, since it was the first time I've been in a studio.
During my time at APU I’ve discovered that I especially love composing for choir. You can’t have a good choir without a good community and I’ve been blessed with the presence of so many dedicated, humble, and passionate people in the music department. I feel like I’ve finally found my calling not only musically, but in life.
I’d like to acknowledge my best friend @val.907 for reviewing the Russian and being my rock with a language I’m definitely not fluent in. Kudos to my choir for picking it up so quickly. None of them have sung in Russian before and they did so well!

♬♩♪♩The Song of Achilles (Choral Demo)Laureli Amadeus2022-12-13 | this is my composition jury piece for this semester at apu. i've learned an insane amount about choral writing from this piece alone, and now i can't look at it without seeing things that 1.) wouldn't work in a choir, and 2.) logistically couldn't happen due to the proportions of a choir. there's just a lot that needs work on it, so i'm gonna rework it into JUST four-part (and maybe some splits), because it's just too big.
i have snagged the two main leitmotifs from this piece (patroclus' and achilles' themes, if you caught 'em) and begun to insert them into my hopefully-soon-to-be musical/senior project. i'm already invested in telling this story, so i might as well tell it in a way that makes me proud of myself.
overall, even if i'm not completely satisfied with this piece, it was essential in learning about my tendencies (both good and bad) as a composer. i thought i might as well post it here, even if i'll inevitably be embarrassed by it later. that's writing, baybee.
