There a few things I do to cozy up the coop. They include deep litter in the bottom, tar paper inside to reduce drafts, foam seal around the door cracks, red heat bulbs for those bitter cold nights below freezing, drum water heaters to keep their water from freezing and plenty of scratch kept inside of the coop so they can snack without going outside in the wet and cold. I also make up a little rice or warm oat porridge to feed them on those cold mornings, using the fiber from our juice or the pulp left over from making almond or coconut milk. This stretches the oatmeal further and adds nutrients to their porridge.

Allow this recipe to serve as a guideline for making your own petroleum-free spoon butter. The ingredients are simple, refined (unscented) coconut oil, beeswax and orange oil. Add more beeswax, for a harder, stiffer consistency, more coconut oil for a softer spreadable paste.
Ive found my favorite ratio is 1:4 ratio of beeswax to coconut oil with .3 part orange oil.
INGREDIENTS
To fill an 8oz jar I use:
110-120g coconut oil
30g beeswax
10g orange oil
DIRECTIONS
Put your glass jar into a pot of water and fill it 1 from the top of the jar. Bring to a simmer and add your beeswax. When the beeswax has melted add in your coconut oil. Stir to combine. Remove from heat and add the orange oil, stir. Allow your mixture to cool before moving or screwing on the lid.
These make great holiday gifts for the loves in your life.
