Collins Obinna Chibueze (born May 9, 1995, in Woodbridge, Virginia), known professionally as Shaboozey, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer whose music blends country, Americana, and hip-hop.
He is a first-generation Nigerian-American (Igbo heritage); his parents immigrated from Nigeria, and his father (who attended college in Texas) introduced him to country artists like Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton alongside hip-hop and other influences. Raised in Northern Virginia, he spent some time at a boarding school in Nigeria, graduated from Gar-Field Senior High School in 2013 (where he played football), and initially aspired to be a novelist or work in film/visuals. His stage name comes from a high school football coach’s mispronunciation of his surname Chibueze (an Igbo phrase meaning “God is king”).
Early Career
Shaboozey began releasing music around 2014, starting with the sparse trap single “Jeff Gordon” (referencing the NASCAR driver). He signed with Republic Records around 2017 and released his debut album, Lady Wrangler, in 2018. This project mixed hip-hop with country elements. He gained broader notice that year with his contribution to “Start a Riot” (with Duckwrth) on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack.
