VIDEO INFO: Rare copy of the power-ballad single with a soft-focused, off-the-shelf promo video that one can imagine Mr. Loaf rejecting for excessive cliché. However, the short-lived collaboration was, initially at least, taken seriously by both partners and produced an album of genuine super-group panache as Jimmy Page dipped into his biscuit tin of spare riffs and David Coverdale produced one of the best vocal performances of his career in terms of range.
The project came at the right time (a resurgence of guitar-based rock) and place (Geffen Records) to enhance the pair’s lofty reputations – Page’s virtuoso skills backed by an artistic and commercial credibility that, over a decade on from their final album, saw Led Zeppelin shifting more units than most of the still-active competition while Coverdale was a pioneer of adapting arena rock for the MTV generation.
It seems trite now, but Whitesnake’s PR approach, with slick studio production, glossy videos and magazine shoots attracted an army of female fans which made them arguably the biggest band in the world during 1987-88.
But ‘Led Snake’ proved an all-too brief phenomenon – a few dates into the supporting tour, Page bailed to re-join Robert Plant for an Unplugged set which was followed by two albums and tours over the following four years or so.
