When most people think about bone health, they think about calcium and vitamin D. Both are important, but there is another major piece that often gets overlooked: protein. In this episode of Talking With Docs, the doctors explain why protein plays an important role in building and maintaining healthy bones, how it works alongside calcium and vitamin D, and why simply taking more calcium may not provide extra benefit once you are already getting enough. Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Protein, primarily in the form of Type I collagen, provides the framework that calcium, phosphate, and other minerals are deposited onto to give bone its strength. The doctors also discuss a 2026 observational study published in Osteoporosis International involving more than 580 older women. The study looked at calcium and protein intake alongside osteoporosis treatment and highlighted the importance of adequate nutrition when trying to maintain or build bone.
