From campaigns to countdowns: 36 historic days revisted.
Relive one of the most dramatic chapters in U.S. political and legal history.
When Americans went to the polls on November 7, 2000, to elect the next Commander-in-Chief, no one could have predicted the events of succeeding days and weeks - events that would test the very limits of the Constitution and mesmerize a nation. For 36 days, George W. Bush and Al Gore fought tooth-and-nail for the presidentcy - and Florida became the final battleground.
Relive Election 2000 - from the drama of Election Night to the Florida recounts, from the intense war of words between the candidatesʼ camps to the momentous legal actions in the U.S. and Florida Supreme Couts. CNN reporters Judy Woodruff, Bernie Shaw, Jeff Greenfield, Greta Van Susteren, Bill Schneider and others reflect on the key events and what he outcome means for Americaʼs future. CNN anchor Bill Hemmer hosts.

People celebrated in the streets of West Belfast. On August 31st the Irish Republican Army had just announced a permanent ceasefire in Northern Ireland The British and Irish governments had insisted on it, if the IRA s political party Sinn Féin was to participate in peace talks. By October 21st British Prime Minister John Major was convinced the ceasefire was genuine. I am now prepared to make a working assumption that the ceasefire is intended to be permanent. More than 3,000 people have been killed in political violence since 1969. Many in Northern Ireland have suffered-some at the hands of British troops and Protestant paramilitary men, others because of the bombs of the IRA. The ceasefire doesnt mean the IRA has abandoned its goal - it still wants Britain out and Ireland united.

August 14, 1994: The day of the jackal finally comes to an end. After 20 years of evading an international dragnet, the shadowy international terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal is in French custody.
Charles Pasqua, French Interior Minister: The greatest terrorist of our time is finally in the hands of justice.
Carlos is blamed for dozens of deaths and terrorist attacks from Europe to Japan. His real name, Felix Ramirez Sanchez. A master of disguise who frequently changed his appearance through plastic surgery. Carloss arrest came in Sudan. A former CIA official called him a terrorist burnout who spent most of the last decades swilling whiskey. Yet he remains an almost legendary symbol of terrorism.
David Yallop, Author, The Hunt for the Jackal: He is a walking encyclopedia not only of the acts of terrorism that he was responsible for but but everything thats occurred in that area for the last 25 years.

Bart Simpson: Very well, you leave me no choice. This gun is filled with ketchup.
Bart Simpson’s home network, Fox, jolts the television industry. The new kid on the broadcast block snatches away a dozen affiliates of the big 3 networks.
Bart: Cool
Most of the defections are from CBS.
Phil Kloer, TV Critic: Nothing like this has ever happened in broadcast television before,
CBS scrambles to find new stations to run its programs.
Kloer: .and chances are, that new affiliate is going to be weaker, and it’s going to hurt.
Paul Schulman, Media Buyer: It’s a big loss in the amount of people who can receive the CBS signal.
Preston Padden, V.P. Fox Affiliates: Today’s announcement is really a giant step toward our goal of becoming the #1 television network in America.
That step is a costly one. Fox makes a half-billion dollar investment in the company that owns its new affiliates. That’s after spending big money for the rights to air NFL games, which had been
on CBS for decades.
[no idea who this is]:City: Im ready. Hey, where’d everyone go?
That’s what some viewers are left wondering as they try to sort out the network changes and the changing channels of some programs.
Narrator: Bobbie Battista, CNN
