Catharsis Victor Frost 2023-03-30 | I made this video a long time ago when I was working on the Japanese Commercials video. I was having a rough go, got a little lost in the sauce, and made this as a way of blowing off steam. It's like when a pianist is having a hard time with a piece and they just stop and mash the keys. Or when you can't beat part of a video game level so you just repeatedly jump in a pit and die. Because fuck.I'm having kinda a rough go right now. Lots of stress. Lots of big, important deadlines. Lots of big, important things to get done. Watching this helps me because I remember what it FELT like to make it. I remember all the tiny secrets I baked into it. The sheer fuck it factor of every "choice". Because it felt less like choice and more like compulsion. It felt like taking the step off the edge of a cliff, submitting myself to the lack of agency of the free fall, the inevitability, not caring what came next... and then sinking into the comfort of a well worn beanbag chair. It was as much a release of the stress as it was a resignation. Or maybe they're the same thing.I've been feeling like I'm in a creative rut. I can't even really bring myself to create. Even in my workshop. It feels like all I do is clean my workbench, my room, my desk. What I do create is rarely for my own enjoyment. Mostly it seems like all I do is try to OPTIMIZE. Print a tool holder for this. Make a box for that. Like if I just remove enough inefficiencies, clean out enough metaphorical grit in the gears, maybe that'll be enough for the engine of my creativity to begin turning over and build up some momentum.I don't know if I'll ever crack the nut of creativity. It feels like the shell around it is just getting bigger and harder to get through. Like each day spent plodding through the mud just grows it. Less in life is relieving. Less in life is joyous. Less in life excites me. And any excitement is short lived. I've been here before. I'm told this is what depression feels like. I guess the fact that I've been here before means I can get out of it again but I don't know. I feel like I might crack first. I'm told this is also what depression feels like.For the moment, I'm going to keep moving. I'm leaning a lot on my to-do lists. Just keep moving. Check the thing off, move onto the next thing. Check that off, move onto the next thing. Sleep and eat where necessary. Maybe that'll clean out the grit in the gears. Rock it back and forth. Add a little energy each time. Maybe that'll be enough to build up some momentum. Maybe the next push will pull my wheels out of the rut. Don't get too crazy: spinning my wheels will just make the rut deeper. Check that off, move onto the next thing. What else is there to do?What else is there to do?
