Built in 1833, Christ Church is one of England’s “Waterloo Churches.” These churches were erected with funds from the Church Building Act of 1818 in thanksgiving for victory at the Battle of Waterloo. They were part of a national effort to serve growing rural populations and restore spiritual life after the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars.
Designed by Thomas Trubshaw and funded in part by the Hon. John Sparrow of Bishton Hall, the church’s Gothic Revival style reflects both reverence and restraint. Solid stone, pointed arches, and clean, graceful lines characterise its design.
Perhaps the church’s most striking feature is its stained glass window, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist.
